I get that. They're some of the most iconic software programmes ever produced and a commercial success.

BUT.. come on, the view only and subscribe to create and edit would work on ALL Devices!

I understand they can't all be like Apple as Apple funds it by hardware revenue

Sorry but MS has the right to protect what they own. I am a business owner and they should be protected.

I think they may have to update the app to implement the limitation.

That might be so. I am reporting that they way it works right now, it is fully functional.

Well, given that Office is the only software anybody actually misses when not using Windows I understand the importance of protecting it. But not at the cost of the customers experience.. I miss the days when Apple mocked their love for 'Product Activation' on stage lol

What this all says to me is that before I migrate from my iPad3 to my new 10.5 inch IPP, I should install the free version of Office to my iPad3, back it up, and then restore that to my new IPP. Is that right?

Maybe, it's still not clear if the version from 9.7" iPads is the same as getting it straight on the 10.5".

Yeah, that should work in the short term. But I suspect that Microsoft will update Office for iPad to account for the 10.5 Pro. (I'll wager good money that they hardcoded a check to see if it was running on a 12.9 Pro) If this is all true, then expect a "required" update that will then disable those create features on the 10.5.

Hang on, so if you can do anything except create a new doc without a subscription on the iPad, surely you would just create the doc on your phone and save to the cloud, then open it on your iPad and edit away? Purely hypothetically, of course.

For what it's worth I already have 365 subscription so just signed in with that.

I redownloaded it to 10.5 that I set up as new and I can't seem to do anything without it asking me to sign in for a 365 subscription...
[doublepost=1497407903][/doublepost]Disregard.... I just had to create an account.

Just have a blank doc in the cloud, and when you need a new doc then edit that one and “save as” another name.

Can anyone confirm that it is free on the 9.7 Pro and fully functional?

It was free back when I had my 9.7 but I never used it. Now on my 10.5 they want to charge me, no way!!
My wife is thinking of getting the 9.7 Pro soon and she will use Excel and Word always. She does not want to pay monthly!

What do you mean by fully functional? See screen shot attached.

I wasn't referring to your post. I mean what is the extra functionality you get if you have a subscription? I don't have one, so what can't I do with Excel on my 12.9" for example?

I agree with your wife - It's just one more reason I'll be staying on my 9.7" iPP (new screen tech bothering my eyes is the main one).

I wish they'd sell standalone access per app for Office.
I only even use Excel anymore as it is.

Just an FYI- if you or a family member has a school email account for college or university (students and professors alike) u will qualify for a free Microsoft office installation, wether it's 10.5 or 12.9. I did for 12.9 and it works like a charm.

Does that mean if your family member is in school, that you can ride on their account access to create a new login for youself?

Dang it - we are almost ready to renew and that is a good deal.

Amazon always has it for that price and occasionally it drops lower. They had it for $60 a while back and I bought 2 of them and extended my subscription for the family for 2 years.

Wonder if they are smart enough to exclude the free alumni accounts my old University now gives out. I may have to give that a shot.
