You can edit office documents stored in dropbox without a subscription. This is what I always use. When you select the document in the dropbox app there is an icon saying "open with Microsoft Excel" for example. This will then open in Excel and allow you to edit/save the file.

Does this limitation of free software on screens over 10.1" include the Outlook app and also OneNote app?

Has anyone who uses the Office apps received their 10.5" having upgraded from 9.7" device?

If so, have you been prompted to purchase an Office365 subscription due to the larger screen size? I'm assuming this will be the case but would like to have it confirmed.

I just upgraded to the 10.5" without knowing this rule from microsoft. So I now have my new device but cannot use Office for free... this upgrade just cost me MUCH more than what I had thought. I now have to pay an extra US$6.99 per month to use office products. If you are thinking about upgrading your Ipad Pro and you are a heavy user of Microsoft Office (like I am), think twice...

Surely glad I can use the free microsoft apps on the tab S3. It would be a disappointment if i couldnt.

This pisses me off

I tried Pages, but its worthless to me. It has no auto-gramma detector or word repleacement. Those features are everything to me, it saved me from failing during my written exams. For instance, if i wrote "I i cammot go" in a word doc, it would correct it to "I cannot go". Pages can only detect individual words, and you have to highlight the word for a suggestion. It's as bad as the program called WordPad that i used to run on my XP during 2003 (and the "simplicity" is as bad as NotePad). It's too much of a hassle. Sure, I can and plan on downloading a cracked version of Office 2017, but whats the point if i cannot continue using it on my iPad? I barely use my MBP these days.

Microsoft just updated office suit yesterday or so... And guess what... No more free version of these apps for iPad 10.5
At least it got updated to match 10.5 resolution...

I was wondering about this a few months ago (in fact, I thought I created a post/thread about it, but now I can't find it). Now I'm feeling all the better about my purchase a few months ago of the 9.7 pro. I expect this to last me pretty well for several years.

Am I correct in thinking that you will be able to read existing MS Office Docs, but just not create or amend them?

Someone posted here that if you save the documents to Dropbox, you can open/edit then in the iPad Office apps, even without the subscription. Not sure if it's true (I have an iPad Mini, so it works for me regardless), but it might be worth a try before you spend the $7/month

I'm sure that once Microsoft finds out about that option they'll probably remove it :(

Yes it works quite well, but with the limitations of the app not being on your device - if you have a weak connection, it's pretty hard to use.

I can confirm that my Office Apps expired after 30 days and i needed to purchase a subscription (i actually had one, but forgot to update my credit card details on it and was prompted after the "free" 30 days ran out).

I didn't upgrade from a 9.7; just confirming that a subscription is required beyond 30 days on the 10.5.

That stinks. I thought you could install the apps and open the files from Dropbox into the apps. That's how I do it now, but I have an iPad mini so the restrictions don't apply.

Just an FYI- if you or a family member has a school email account for college or university (students and professors alike) u will qualify for a free Microsoft office installation, wether it's 10.5 or 12.9. I did for 12.9 and it works like a charm.

Do take note that when all the family members are "sharing" this edu 365 account, all document saved to OneDrive will be visible to all the members. Unless you are saving on the iPad on "Send a copy" to another storage app.

Another alternative is a cheap code. I found one on EBay - lifetime for 5 devices - for GBP 9.0.Yea, its a grey market student price. Seems legit it works fine.

I used the dropbox method and it works fine until today. Anyone experience the same thing?
I found office 365 subsciption similar to what @Booji mention, lifetime 5 device + 1TB, it says office 365 home premium. Is it the same one? So, it works?
