Microsoft just updated office suit yesterday or so... And guess what... No more free version of these apps for iPad 10.5
At least it got updated to match 10.5 resolution...

Not paying a monthly fee for this... Can I type a document in Apple Pages and drop that into my Company's PC that uses Word?

I ended up searching around, found it on Amazon for $48, Office Depot price matched for a year, I wish I didn't count on it so much.

Yes, you can use Pages and export as a Word file. I do it regularly and never had a problem with formatting. There is even a menu item to send per mail as Word file, so you dont have to make a docx copy first. Very easy and comfortable.

Yes, I used to do this a lot too. Worked a treat for my needs.

I assume the bump in screen size means use of Microsoft Office apps will now require an Office365 supscription?
That explains it. I was using Word and Excel on iPad Pro 9.7 just fine. When I moved over to iPad Pro 12.9 the 365 subscription kicked in won’t let me edit or save. I even have a 365 account with my work but MS says my company didn’t purchase the “Mobile edition or features”. I deleted both and use Pages and Numbers. I’m glad you asked this question. Thank you C14nhl.

Happy to pay for it. Office is probably the best value piece of software out there.
Less than an Apple Music subscription/month..
I actually don't mind this one either, especially with the included 1 TB of storage for each person. The family pack for $99 (or cheaper on sale) lets 5 people share. Because my daughter uses both a Mac and Windows for school - we are covered and she uses the heck out of OneDrive. The man uses Windows, I'm a Mac. Plus then the mobile uses.

It works out cheap for the year for us, and if it helps them keep adding features to OneNote Mac & iPad, I'm good with that!

My work pays for my Office 365 access, which is nice. If that stopped being the case, I would seriously consider paying out of pocket for it. The fact that Apple has given Microsoft stage time for Office on iPad Pro in recent years tells me that even Apple still considers Office the gold standard.

It's a decent deal for family use... even more so when family members have multiple devices that need Office... particularly for OSX and Windows. Individual experiences may vary, but I've found OneDrive syncing to be the slowest and most dodgy of the large providers: iCloud, Dropbox, etc.

I like having the option to use Office 2011 for Mac on one system and Office 2016 for Mac on another... depending upon what I need. Office 2011 is about 1.8GB in size, has a more "compact" UI and is better suited for my 11" MBA. Office 2016 is 11GB in size and has a more spread-out UI so it is a better fit on my 21" iMac.

IMO, Office for iPad is the least of the reasons for getting Office 365. The functionality is so limited that it is on-par with iWork and Google Docs. If one has to interact with others who use Office and have to MODIFY Office documents, then Office for iPad does an excellent job. But CREATING advanced documents with Office for iPad is not possible.

FYI for those who may not know, OneNote does NOT require an Office 365 subscription.

My subscription has just expired last month, and I have not missed anything yet. MS Office is great for those who use it, but for a lay person, it is overkill. The free iWorks suite works fine for occasional stuff, and if multi platform collaboration is needed, Google Suite works wonderfully.

And just like the previous poster said, one of the best app, OneNote, is completely free and doesn't require paid subscription. Just be careful of the free 5GB OneDrive storage, which might be quite limited if you put a lot of multimedia on your notes.

Just an FYI- if you or a family member has a school email account for college or university (students and professors alike) u will qualify for a free Microsoft office installation, wether it's 10.5 or 12.9. I did for 12.9 and it works like a charm.

Only having school email doesn't work anymore, you have to be a valid student. Some universities really restrict your account after graduation (basically the account becomes a basic free outlook account). My university automatically pulled the subscription to O365 after I graduated.

I was a heavy MS Office user simply because it was the standard and you could share with everyone.

Now, so much collaboration is made much better by cloud services. I'm moving all my work to Google services so the fact that I have to pay for MS Office now for my 10.5 Pro just pushes that migration faster.

I know you’re right.
I signed up using my daughters college email. I figured I paid for the 4 years.

Hi guys
Can someone clearly tell me what exactly can we do with MS office on 10.5 ipad pro in free mode?
Can we edit and save preexisting files without a subscription in the new update? Or even editing needs a subscription?

Thanks in advance

appears to be only viewing is allowed.

Wow.. that surprises me. So they’re holding steady to their <10” screen requirement in order to use full Office features without a subscription?

Edit: the policy is <=10.1”

Here's an article on the subject.

"What Microsoft settled on to divide mobile and desktop users was screen size: specifically 10.1 inches. Anything smaller than that and users can pretty much do anything they want with the appropriate iOS, Windows, or Android app, including creating, editing, or sharing documents. But if you’re using the Office apps on a device whose primary screen is larger than 10.1 inches, Microsoft won’t let you create a new document, just edit and view an Office document created elsewhere."

That's not true either. I couldn't do anything but view. You have to save into Excel and you can't without 360 account. I was forced to buy the subscription. I had in on my first gen pro 12.9. When I upgraded to the new one, it I no longer had free access.
[doublepost=1500082551][/doublepost]I wish I could use the excel and pay for that only. I don't use it often but when I need to, I have to pay for it.

I already have an Office 365 subscription for my business that gives me the hosted exchange email, so for $5 more per month I added the upgrade that gives me access to the Office apps on up to 5 devices, including my iPad.

If you have a standalone license of the desktop version of Microsoft Office installed on one Mac, can you use that license for the iPad as well?

If you have Office 365 you can install on on your Macs, PCs, iPads, and iPhones if you have the Home 2016 for mac then you can only install Office on your Mac

Oh...I have the home one...so is there a standalone license for iPad that you can just buy once and not have to pay every year/month?
