An interesting find today, safari waited for the external hard drive to spin up, then showed me an alert box about using some font that is on that hard drive.

This is after I enabled spotlight for that drive.

What the hell.. why is safari looking all over the place for fonts? ...

Fonts in OS X are a major pain. A corrupt font can actually prevent you from booting! I don't like this about OS X.

yea but you can't connect to Wi-Gig or Wi-Max with an iOS device, while you can in OS X.

Sure, but "Airport," the term that Wi-Fi is replacing, doesn't cover either of those terms--it's 802.11.b/g/n.

I expect they changed it to make it a little bit more switcher-friendly. "Airport" isn't immediately obvious to Windows people, but everyone and their mother knows what Wi-Fi is.

I like the word Wi-Fi instead of AirPort. I don't necessarily like when Apple makes up their own word for something that already has a name.

They do like to call video conversaions "Facetime", high resolution monitors "retina displays" and webcams "iSight" cameras. That's all fine, because they represent a special implementation of a given technology, and it can be named as a feature: "Does it have a retina display?" sounds better than "Is the resolution of the display approximately 300 pixels per inch?"

But Wi-Fi is just Wi-Fi. You connect to a Wi-Fi network, not to an Airport network, and you have "Wi-Fi" at Starbucks, not "Airport".

Uhm, I guess Apple tends to drop their own names when related technologies become more popular. In 1999 people gone crazy seeing Steve picking up the iBook and continuing to surf the Web. Today lots of devices have Wi-Fi built in, it's no more so "exclusive".

Maybe they'll do the same with FaceTime. If a common protocol sometimes in future will make video calls possible between different devices, maybe they will start calling it just "Video Call".

Although they're still calling "SuperDrive" any DVD burner. That's more cool, and everyone knows what a DVD drive does. I bet they will remove it before we'll see a name change.

Funny, firefox on SL sometimes asks me the same thing requesting a font that is on the Lion partition

Any change to Labels? In the old days you use to be able to customize the colors of labels, now under Mac OS 10 you can only customize the name :(

So is anyone able to shed any light on this? If you need to know where to find the Labels preference it's under the Finder Preferences.

I feel like Lion dropped a lot of classic nice things about OS X that many took advantage of. For me I can't play Return to Castle Wolfenstein anymore because it's PPC.

Our computer lab we decided is sticking with SL for the time being, no need for Lion and SL is at the ultra stable ironed out stage.

Yeah, it's the OS at fault, not the browser.

Right now, when I open a movie in quicktime, it waits until the external HD (which the movie is not on), spins up. This takes several seconds as well. Wow. Quite a bug to have for all these years Steve... Lots of programs are affected. And still not fixed in Lion.

Not sure if anyone noticed, but the Dictionary pop up searches Wikipedia, too. Useful.

No one mentioned specifically, but Spotlight can play videos and music.

Also, Finder has icons for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Anyone know why?

Are file transfers / operations queued yet? (Like when you open multiple zip files at once)

I hate how the transfers seem to slow down if you copy a bunch of files to an usb drive, and then a minute later copy another file to that same usb drive (whilst the first is not yet done). The transfer slows down from minutes to hours.

Well we can always hope that it means you'll be able to store files on your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch through Finder.

Preview Signing

Wow, I didn't know about the Preview signing with the iSight camera.

I really need to start learning for about Mac OS X Lion and the Mac OS X Lion Server.

... and when I open Safari and start to scroll a webpage, the entire computer freezes and I hear my external drive spin up. Then I can scroll again 3 seconds later. What the hell? Why is it looking for the webpage on the external drive? It's on the freaking internet, for f's sake!

This also happens totally randomly in any application. I only have my drive plugged in at all times for Time Machine. If it weren't for that, I'd only plug it in when I need something from it (mainly just old files and videos). It's very annoying!

I think yesterday would be the exception due to the upcoming WWDC. I don’t think we’ll see any seeds until WWDC.

Does anyone know a good video on all the features of the latest build of Lion? It'd be great to SEE all the new features instead of just reading about them
