I don't think the new login screen is smart, everyone's going to see the glaring defects of the imac screen this way... :)

Is that because of better SSD support (TRIM etc) or will a standard 7200RPM HDD also boot up faster?

Sure hope they finally fix safari's seemingly inevitable slowdown problems once you use it for a month or so. Always having to reset stuff and delete library caches gets bothersome. And it's still not as fast as when you compare it to the safari in guest account.

Yeah it's faster on a regular hard drive too. It's an improvement in how the drivers load during boot up.

More like they optimized the boot sequence and nothing to do with TRIM.

Remember that TRIM does not speed up your SSDs, it helps retain the performance of an SSD.

Curious to see what this new boot --> login --> desktop process looks like (from the pressing of the button) on the newer MacBook Airs. Has anybody tried this setup yet?

How to set backgrounds in relation to location?

  • you can base stuff around profiles, so it brings back "location in a way, to have different settings for home, work", say sexy wallpaper at home, nice one at home (this takes work to configure)

How exactly is this done? I've been through this thread an repeated all of the features I felt were exciting and had not heard of but this one I cannot, video? Has this feature been removed or toned down as a consequence of the privacy data issue with Apple recently? Or was it just an example of what could be done with it, I see its switched off by default.

Thanks.

Little things I noticed

There are now a lot of undo's available now, not just one step back, not sure how many though? It could be limited to time of use or file size?

I noticed that when looking at several images by moving the arrow keys, and that those images are of varying sizes, that the QuickLook window will resize to fit the image accordingly so now nothing is stretched and over-pixelated, but in proportion. Good move Apple. However the white border is not such a good idea.

Actually it is, it's now a button at the bottom of the login window rather than in the list of regular users (which I agree is much better).

No, in build 11a459e the Guest login is up there with the others along the horizontal plane. It has the blank Safari 404 embossed look to it, but its not hidden down at the bottom.

Using the third and most recent build (11a459e) I do not see anything like this, I have scroll bars turned off (to hide them when not in use):

Thanks

You see it if the scroll shaft overlays content and the scroll is in use. Only does it in applications that hasn't been written specifically for Lion though. I first noticed it in transmission.

Another question.

In leopard and snow leopard, if you have an external HD that spins down after some time, like the WD mybook drives, if you then access the finder (not even clicking on that particular drive), the finder slows down until the HD has spinned up.

Has this been fixed? Apple really should use a local cache. It's not so bad in the finder, but it also happens to some programs due to the recently opened item list, or when you click on file > open in a program (again without selecting that disk).

Most annoying thing about the mac.

I agree. Annoys the heck out of me! I haven't noticed a fix in Lion though :(

Thought I was the only with this problem… it's more annoying in other programs to me, especially when you skim through options in the program/options bar (can't remember it's name ;) ) and suddenly the program freezes because the drive has to spin up.

Can anyone recommend an external drive or brand that doesn't spin down ever? It's very annoying with WD drives. I like them but I can't stand the spin up. I use mine with Time Machine, so it needs to spin up at least once an hour, not to mention that I use it for random things, so it keeps spinning up and down non stop. It would be simpler if it never went to sleep...

..and Wi-Gig, Wi-Max....

Until we see the next build, it's tentative beta behavior. This build is inconsistent with the use of "AirPort" and "Wi-Fi." As well as "Spaces" and "Desktops." Either Apple is rebranding AirPort to Wi-Fi and Spaces to Desktops, or it's just a bug of sorts. We'll see next build what they do.

I see that "AirPort" has changed to "Wi-Fi now, I understand this change. However, why not use "AirPort" is one has such a thing, similarly "Wi-Max" or "Wi-Gig" are names people will become familiar with.

It's called Wi-Fi on iOS.

The emoji has changed in DP3. It now uses different unicode characters and are not compatible with the iOS emoji. WTH is the point of that?

Also there's a lot more of them now. Some use the colour images, some proper font symbols.

Here are some interesting ones:
