2 things i'm curious about.

1. Scrolling. PLEASE don't tell me we can't use the mouse to physically drag the scroll bar. That is one gripe of the iPhone I can't stand. I jailbreak for it, but still - there's 99% of people out there, when they're presented with a long ass website they need flick, flick, flick, flick over and over again to get where they want. If it's like that in 10.7 that's going to suck!

2. Quicklook. Just curious if any changes have been made to quicklook. What I mean is if I am looking at an image that is say 500x500, and I press the down arrow key to view the next image that is let's say 800x300. Currently the quicklook window will not automatically adjust the size, rather it fits the wider image into the same window size, making it smaller....just curious if anything has been done about that....

You can click and drag on the scroll bar to move it.

And Quicklook does what you want it too :) That was one thing I wanted too!

  • Parts of the menubar show on the login screen.

You mean the time, battery, and wifi status? Actually, this is a feature. And I like it. Very useful. Although it's either got a few bugs or just it's not live and doesn't update (try plugging/unplugging the power cord on a laptop).

But I agree with both camps here. It definitely is very stable overall with just a lot of minor issues to take care of. Polishing, if you will. But that's how you know it's relatively close to release. No show stopping, glaring issues that I can see. Even more visual tweaks here and there like the Safari downloads. (Can highlight individual lines. Nice divider between items. Auto adjusts width.)

My bet is 2 more updates before release. Most likely another DP then a GM.

Although, I was a little surprised at the fact that there were no surprises... It's unlike Apple to show their whole hand so far in advance. :\ Everything from the new UI changes to all the major new features were known months ago, nearly all in October. I'm still hoping they've got something else up their sleeve.

No. It will ship in July. We know this. There's no ifs or buts.Like?

Check if you have "Automatically rearrange spaces based on most recent use" unchecked.

I know it is shipping in July but that means Apple has 40 days to fix all issues...

The mail.app has many issues with saving SMTP outgoing servers and using them with an account. I made the mistake yesterday to change my MobileMe password. Receiving emails after the password change was no problem, but sending was a big one. I of course changed the password for the outgoing server too.. Mail couldn't save the settings for the outgoing server. Even deleting all account info (and the plist file) and creating everything from scratch didn't help. The system pops up a window with an error message that cannot be read because it goes away almost instantly. Drafts are saved and emails cannot be send. Even for my two Exchange accounts, mail.app lost the setting of the outgoing server.
I tried creating a completely new user profile but I had the exact same issues. The system.log brought up a lot of errors in system functions of various frameworks. I filed a bug report to Apple about this and I hope they fix it before release!

About apps not starting in the same space: I am aware of the setting you mentioned. The thing is that there are still many bugs there. Try putting the Mail.app in full screen mode and then restarting. It will open in window mode! Try opening Word in Desktop #3 (for example). Assign it to that desktop. Restart the computer and you will see Word in Desktop 1...Try moving the iTunes window anywhere in the screen. Restart the computer by saving the state of all open windows. iTunes will always go on the top left side.
Lion is not ready yet but I am sure it will be. I hope Apple will fix all the bugs before release!

2 finger swipe upwards over dock icons no longer activates expose for that application. It was in dp2 and was very useful.

Im using an older trackpad by the way.

I've done a little testing myself, and noticed that DFS is supported with the new SMB client. It seems to work well, haven't noticed any problems (yet).

I've done some limited testing and whilst mounting DFS shares from the Finder seems to work well I can't get DFS home folders working with Active Directory users (they can't log in). I tried setting the AD plugin to create Mobile Accounts and now the login window just hangs. Non-DFS AD users are fine.

Anyone managed to get DFS home folders working with 10.7?

I was a little bummed out too when Lion was demoed at the WWDC and the feature set they decided to cover was almost exactly the same as the one covered during the Back to the Mac event in October. After a whole 8 months, there was nothing even moderately different.

Unfortunately there can’t be too many surprises. I’d imagine at this stage, the OS is basically feature-complete and primarily getting bug fixes.

Has anyone else seen this?

Wow. I like that a lot. Uses your Apple ID, so as long as you keep that password different and safe, it's a quick easy way to reset without digging out an install disk (especially handy if you don't have a Lion install disk, which may be true for nearly everyone).

Could someone post a screenshot of the Save As... dialog in Lion — for example when you right-click an image in Safari and choose "Save Image As...". Does it include e.g. the ability to change the size of the icons when in icon view?

Doesn't seem like it.

That window is a weird one... It lack a lot of features a regular Finder window has.

Thanks guys. Too bad :(

Yeah.. if I remember correctly it was one of those things that didn't change with Tiger => Leopard, and hasn't been improved since. Strange remnants..

Has QuickTime Player 10 in Lion gained support for any additional video/audio formats? Is Quicktime 7 still necessary? Thanks.

QTX (AVFoundation) appears to support MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 variants (which includes HDV and other pro video formats like XDCAM), as well as DV variants (DVCPro, etc) + ProRes (this one, via a plugin, which suggests that AVFoundation can support additional codecs as plugins, at least from Apple).
This involves support of mpeg containers (including multiplexed mpeg-2), though there are issues with those (no filmstrip in edit mode, and m2v files don't play well at all).
Other codecs like AIC aren't yet supported and are decoded by a 32 bit process for "legacy" formats.

Now, other functions like Quicktime VR, reference movies, and apparently some subtitles aren't supported. At all. They require QT player 7. Funny, because they play fine in QT Player 10.0 in Snow Leo. So it seems that QT player 10.1 cannot use QT 7 as much as QT player 10.0 can.

Does Lion's Mission Control have issues with Photoshop CS5 or Flash CS5 when switching Spaces? In Snow Leopard, parts of the interface got left behind when doing this, especially in Flash. In Photoshop, Exposé didn't always work correctly, as some palettes simply didn't "exposé" themselves but stayed where they were. Dialog boxes also appeared in different spaces than the one Photoshop was in, making the whole thing one big mess.

So does Lion finally fix these problems?

Hmm, interesting. I think I'd rather the scroll bars be on always just so I always have a reference point as to where I am on the site/document, but I could probably get used that. Great about QuickLook though.

You can have them on all the time, if you want.

Smart folders don't work for me in DP4. They just won't show the results (of course, there were results when I saved the searches).
Can anyone test?

Permission Verify/Repair

In Lion, how long does it take to verify/repair permission? I remember in Tiger when permission repair took no time at all, but in Leopard it took forever. Snow Leopard was a little faster, but still wasn't the best.
