Is any of the OS code actually optimized from earlier versions? Down at the building-block level?

Or is this what we expected and just some included applets and mini-features baked in?

Good question. Don't let the fanboys who voted your post down discourage you... You asked a valid question. The reason many people (such as myself) will likely be sticking with Snow Leopard is because it was an OS based on code actually optimized from earlier versions, down at the building block level.

Fanboys are not critical. If Apple releases something excellent, fanboys reply with praise. If Apple releases a piece of crap, fanboys reply with the same level of praise.

I enjoy building blocks very much, but I don't think that's what they make an OS out of.

July 26

Public release July 24th is my guess.
My guess is July 26. Apple does a weekly update of the Mac App Store (new featured apps and such) every Thursday. The 26th seems like it would be a great time to see "OS X Mountain Lion" as the first featured app.

I'm honestly not that excited about this upgrade. Nothing exciting has really come out since Tiger or Leopard in my opinion. Most of these new features will be used for like 5 minutes by the mainstream user because they're just not that important (i.e. Reminders). And they also end up taking up more precious RAM & most importantly, battery life (on a laptop). Can someone name something that is really that ground breaking in this release? It just seems like things were reorganized & tweaked a bit.

P.S.
I've been in the Apple game since 1985, so I know a good Apple product when I see it. I'm not saying this is bad, but it's just not that amazing. Maybe OS 11 will be exciting?

Sweet! So they'll probably officially roll it out on the investors call like last time. Buying my first iMac in August, can hardly wait to play with it. Yes, I'm drooling

Memory management is much improved.

Sounds good.
You seem to have tested it a bit. Do you know if any of these things from Lion (and previously) has been taken care of?

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2096906/app_switcher_darkened_icons.m4v
This doesn't happen often and only seems to get ”triggered” when there's quite a lot of apps running (maybe 20 or so). It's been there for me since 10.5 I think.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2096906/mouse_cursor_update_through_menu.m4v
Mouse cursor updates ”through” Dock menu even if it shouldn't.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2096906/no_proper_cursor_update_in_textedit.m4v
Mouse cursor doesn't update properly in TextEdit.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2096906/unexpected_column_resize_behaviour.m4v
Double-clicking a column resize-handle in the Finder when using any of the ”Arrange” views in Lion doesn't make the column fit the item with the longest (widest) name.

Another thing with the ”Arrange” feature that is a bit stupid (which I really like it otherwise) is that when having a finder window sorted as list and an arrange by ”Date Added” and typing a file name to select it, it can be that the file that gets selected shows up underneath the day label, which makes it quite hard to spot:

Just a few small examples I'm curios about if they've gotten any attention. Maybe I'm just being picky, but to me it seems Apple is quite often lacking their famous ”attention to detail”. :-/

Everyone I know uses Lion fullscreen... I do agree that most of the features in Lion are just "meh", but fullscreen was a nice addition.

It would be great if reminders showed up in Notification Center without having to add a time/date for them.

I kept expecting the guy in the video to say something along the lines of, "Also, in the Speech panel of System Preferences, there is now the option of using my voice for text-to-speech".

I've noticed Lion seems to be a bit of a memory hog. Has any developer with the GM installed noticed that changing with Mountain Lion?

not sure whats worse
a) not knowing how to obtain things illegally on net in 2012
b) asking for help to do it on a forum thats so against it
i hope you're happy for your good deed, steve would be so proud of your unpaid internet policing. unfortunately downloading beta releases is not illegal, providing them, however, is. additionally, if you're not a developer, you are allowed to talk freely about nda-covered stuff, because it wasn't you who signed the nda. good luck for your crime fighting though.

For all of you wanting to know....

GM stands for Golden Master. It is the FINAL build that will be released to the public.

The only time a GM build has changed before public release is if they uncover a catastrophic bug that affects a large number of people. This is HIGHLY unlikely and rarely happens at this stage (Apple or any other company for that matter).

If you have access to the GM, go ahead and install it. It's the FINAL version of OS X 10.8.

Officially obsolete

Well looks like my early 2008 MacBook is officially obsolete here soon. All because of a graphics card. :(

Been using Apple OS'es since Mac OS 8, so guess I test it out a lot :D

You caught me though, I rarely use anything other than icon view. I'll check out your bugs, and if they're present on my Mac Pro, MacBook Pro in admin and guest accounts, I'll report it. Thanks!

update:
RE: mouse cursor in Dock.app
I see what you mean, it changes and is inconsistent. This is in Lion with the 2D Dock?

As for tabbed app browsing, I noticed a few things. [Some of] the app's that seem "darkened" are open in your Dock. Also, there are missing apps/gaps in your Dock (are you using a third party app for your Dock?).

Side note: Nice, I commend you on modifying your dock to black as I always change my dock from silver to black so the "Open Apps" indicators show well. I do not know why Apple uses a silver Dock with bright orbs as default. However the Dock in 10.8 has been changed, so modifying the scurve*png's isn't possible as they don't exist, it's adaptive or such.
