I hate to say it, but I'm a bit underwhelmed by Mountain Lion's new features. Watching the video, there's only a few of them that seemed useful to me, and nothing I've seen has excited me enough to anticipate the release. Maybe because I'm not a big social person, I don't use FaceBook at all and while I do use Twitter, I could live without it. Probably still a decent value at $20 but I can't remember ever being this apathetic about an OS X release.

The beauty of Apple is that you don't know what you need until they give it to you. After a few weeks with the new, if subtle, features, you'll wonder how you ever lived without them.

Can the enable trim hacks for 3rd party SSD drives be applied to this version?

Question (and forgive my ignorance on TRIM/Garbage Collection in OS X):

As OS X has a differing file system, is TRIM necessary in OS X? Garbage Collection? What are the benefits?

Have an OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G 240GB SSD in my Mac Pro, and tried a few of the TRIM enablers. I noticed more issues with them active.

iWork updates will probably not update the app functionality, but just allow the new OS features to work with it. Remember "full page" when Lion came out?

i meant like an iWork 2012 update. A major new build.

I hate how Apple never gives us dates! I hate how companies says it wil come out in a broad time scale. Come this winter, Coming this year, Coming this October. It's fine when maybe it's more then a year away but when it comes to like one month or like right now where it's this month. They don't even tell us. I don't like being left in the dark!

I'm guessing you don't work in software development, because if you did you would understand why they don't.

In the 'old' days, it was often the case that companies would release dates for their software but now people are testing & fixing right up to the wire. They obviously will have a target date but if something happens then its better to fix it and delay the release date than ship with a known problem which would cost more to the company not to fix.

We're working on our latest FixPack and while we want to get it out the door this month all the customers know is its coming very soon but no more. At the moment I can see us slipping by a few days as we have too many fixes still going in to shut off the code stream. When a single problem in the field can cost $10,000+ to fix, a week delay on release can be well worth it (Considering you can fix 100's of problems in that time.

a better place
Yup, reported this just a while ago. :)

EDIT:

Um, why the downvotes? I actually was the one that reported this in the forums, not that it matters, I was agreeing with user Peace :) ?

The mod's merged our threads, which is why my comment is here and out of its original place. The timeline/frame of our comments is off because of this merge.

The site was so much better without the voting system. Its implementation breeds hostility to commenters, and is used as a tool in the often fanboy style arguments that flair up be it Microsoft, Android or Apple related.

Even harmless posts or ones which used to exhibit a sense of humor are now downvoted in some petty attempt at superiority or lack of reading 'context' within a posters comment.

Been using Apple OS'es since Mac OS 8, so guess I test it out a lot :D

Cool. :)
I've ”been around” since System 6 or so, when my mother got a Macintosh SE for work. Time flies and we with it… :| :)

update:
RE: mouse cursor in Dock.app
I see what you mean, it changes and is inconsistent. This is in Lion with the 2D Dock?

Yes, it's in Lion with Safari ”underneath”. But I'm quite sure it behaves like that in Snow Leopard too and with the Dock at the bottom (yes, just tried it in Lion with Dock at the bottom).

As for tabbed app browsing, I noticed a few things. [Some of] the app's that seem "darkened" are open in your Dock. Also, there are missing apps/gaps in your Dock (are you using a third party app for your Dock?).

The ”gaps” are apps with an invisible icon – I use them as separators. They can't be run, so it shouldn't affect this. So, no third party app mod for the Dock.

Side note: Nice, I commend you on modifying your dock to black as I always change my dock from silver to black so the "Open Apps" indicators show well. I do not know why Apple uses a silver Dock with bright orbs as default. However the Dock in 10.8 has been changed, so modifying the scurve*png's isn't possible as they don't exist, it's adaptive or such.

Yeah, I think it looks cool with the darker Dock. I've used the app CandyBar to modify its look and the Dock is called ”New Dock Obsidian” by Max Rudberg. I'm sure this isn't a cause of the ”problems” I reported, as they also happens on my laptop where I don't have these small modifications.

You did a really nice job cataloging these issues, I've seen some of these and others and have generally found Lion less polished than Snow Leopard.
Hopefully Mountain Lion corrects these.

Well, thank you. It's many times really difficult to explain GUI gripes (and other issues) to someone without actually sitting next to the person, explaining and showing at the same time. :)

A reminder on how to make your own USB copy. Requires a 8GB+ USB drive

*Download the installer from the app store.

*Right-click installer -> "Show Package Contents"

vZXBuZg

*Contents -> Shared Support -> InstallESD.dmg (open it/mount it)

vZXBubA

*Open the terminal and copy this command:

open /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ ESD/BaseSystem.dmg

vZXBuag

*Now open Diskutility and "restore" BaseSystem.dmg to your USB drive.

***PLEASE NOTE THIS REQUIRES YOUR USB HAS A GUID PARTITION TABLE***

[Restoring the DMG]
vZXBubQ

*Now open your newly restored USB drive

vZXBubg

*System -> Installation

vZXBubw

*Delete the link called "Packages" and then create a new folder with the same name

vZXBucA

Ylcjz.png

*Open the terminal again and copy this to it:

open /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ ESD/Packages

lC0tJ.png

*Copy everything in this folder to the "Packages" folder you created on your USB.

**Note this stage might take a while**

Hurray you now have a working installer.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A note:

This guide may seem different to others you have seen but it works better:

*The standard installer will copy the installation DMG to your hard drive and then re-run the installation using that. i.e you are needlessly running the install twice. My way doesn't do that.

*This installer allows you to clean install

Agree. A while back Arn and I exchanged a few PM's about implementation of the voting system. He suggested possibly keeping "+" votes for helpful comments and eliminating negative voting (didn't happen). Down voting seems to generally be passive-aggressive and results in derailing topics, which is apparent on many threads. :)

Gotcha.
Never had this issue, I'll try to reproduce it.

Use "CandyBar" as well. It's a great GUI for modifying core components and shouldn't hinder Dock.app. I sometimes use it, although I usually manually replace the Dock png's. I also have the Obsidian dock; shame 10.8 negates its use. "CandyBar" developers may find a way. :)

Released around the same time as my RMBP is supposed to be shipped.

I wonder which will come first!

I prefer ML so that I dont have to install it as soon as I receive the RMBP.

Could anyone with an SSD on a standard Macbook Pro (IE one without built in flash storage) check to see if power nap is supported? I will be very disappointed if it is not :(
