Is there a way in the GM to force a bottom 2D Dock?

Not that we're aware of, yet. The old terminal command doesn't work anymore. Fingers crossed we learn of a new method for Mavericks. Because I vastly prefer a 2D dock on the bottom there (with darker contrast) too.

Is it just me or has mavericks totally ruined Safari reader? Reader isn't as clear and simplified as it is on ios7. I use reader a lot and I'm considering not updating to Mavericks just to keep it.

Jony Ive totally failed in this aspect for me.

Is it just me, or should they incorporate a little more of the flat design of iOS 7 into 10.9? like messages?

Not just you. I suspect they will implement a refresh in 10.10 that's not as dramatic as iOS 7 but tones down and reduces much of the gloss, and introduces more designed-for-retina/hairline elements.

What's the difference from ML?

If Reader isn't doing it for you, check out the Readability browser add-on.

It looks kinda the same to me, although I note we no longer have the buttons for mailing and printing the page. So if anything, it seems like it's gotten *more* simplified than I'd like. What else about it do you feel is "ruined?"

I'd been using the Custom Reader II to customize the way the text from Safari Reader is laid out. And it still appears to work in Safari 7.0, but I need to adjust page width in its settings to center the text. I'm sure that developer will update that extension when Mavericks drops.

What I don't like about the Readability extension is that by clicking the "Read Now" button, it formats the current text to be more readable (a la Safari Reader) but it also saves the article to your Readability account (a la Instapaper and Pocket.) The way I browse and read on the web, sometimes I just want to re-format the current page without necessarily saving that same article to a "read it later" service. And as best as I can tell, there's no way to do that with Readability, is there?

Another great extension, BTW, is Evernote, and at least in Chrome it's up to version 6.0, and in that version is a button for "Simplified Article" that I've been using. It does the same thing as Safari Reader. So let's hope Evernote updates that web clipper extension to 6.0 for Safari as well.

The 2d dock looks different now though, you won't have the dark look anymore.

I notice that in Mavericks, we're once again able to remove icons from Finder windows' "Sidebar" by click-and-dragging them away. They disappear in a puff of smoke, just like they used to. This functionality was removed in Mountain Lion, as far as I know, the only way to remove icons in that version of the OS was to control-click and select "Remove from Sidebar." Now, once again, I am happy to report, we can click-and-drag away, just like we can from the Dock.

Ah, gotcha. I just checked the dock on the right/left side and see what you mean.

Alas, just as I hope/expect to see a tweak to make the bottom dock 2D again, I hope/expect to see tweaks that allow us to customize the dock's color and background. Like these guys, but for Mavericks:

It does work on ML too. You just have to drag it away and press the command key, then you release the icon. But it's probably better if it works like the dock, i.e. without the additional key.

Ah yes, you are correct. Funny, it's only been a short while since I upgraded, and I've already forgotten how some subtleties like this used to work in Mountain Lion :D

I do know that Mountain Lion was the first OS to require that we hold down that Command key and it would confuse/annoy me. It's not like I would ever accidentally remove an icon from the Sidebar, so it felt like UI overkill. (If anything, I'd prefer to see an option for that on the Dock. ML made us drag out further from the dock to remove an icon. Command-clicking is easier.)

Anyway, I am happy to see Mavericks lets us remove icons from the Sidebar with a simple click-drag, once again!

Deleting files does not give your space back?

When i delete something in OSX mavericks i do not get my space back, finder shows the same number in gigs for my space left on my drive. Deleted an 11 gig file, had 3.3gigs left and it didn't update giving me my 11 gigs back? Checked it with disk utility, repaired permissions, restarted the mac, booted up into recovery partition and still nothing. Can anyone confirm that it is a problem on their system as well?

Regarding "All My Files", in ML these were categorized by file kind and within these groupings they were ordered by last modified. I noticed the other day that in the GM they are ordered by kind but now it is subordered by name instead of last modified. Was there a setting I switched? I tried changing the arrange by but it will remove it from "king" grouping with anything else.

*EDIT* I apologize, I found in View Options I can change the sort by to modified date.

According to these articles (1, 2) when merging files from one folder into another in Mountain Lion, the default buttons that appeared on the file dialog were: Skip, Stop, or Replace. And if you help the Option key down, those buttons became: Keep Both, Stop, Replace. (You'd choose "Keep Both" if you wanted to merge.)

Now it appears in Mavericks, these are reversed. The default buttons that appear on the resulting file dialog are: Keep Both, Stop, or Replace. And if you hold the Option key down, those buttons become Skip, Stop, Replace.

(Note: the "Keep Both" command only appears for dragged files, not folders.)

Stay logged out of Readability.com only to use the reading formatting.

Coming from windows, this never makes sense to me!

In windows, if I choose to merge it will come up there is an item with a same name do you want to skip ( apply to all ) This is great as it only copies the files that are not already in the folder.

How the hell do you do this on Mac?

It's the Windows way that confuses me, as it likely will end you up with a folder that has a combination of old and new items.

On the Mac, you'd either choose "Replace," or you'd merge the contents of folder B into folder A instead.

Did they finally iMessages so that they order correctly? I know there was a ptach for ML (10.8.4?) that was supposed to specifically address this, but didn't do jack sh**t.

Jack Shirt? Anyway, that fixed it for me so it's hard to say if 10.9 does. I'd doubt it though.

Not sure if this is a bug or if it was removed but any find that they can't swipe back/forward in Finder? I'm pretty sure this was possible with Mountain Lion, kind of disappointing that I have to click on the arrow to go back to a previous window.

Yep, it's not in GM... Was in Mountain Lion, but sometimes it was buggy and didn't work.

However, it's DAMN annoying to constantly click that small "Back" button.....

Just wondering. When you click on a stack or right click on an icon in the dock. Does the popup menu thingy that comes up still look the same?

The black look fitted with the old 2d dock but now that the dock is white it would just look weird if it remained the same!

Hold down command, and drag and drop.

Maverick

The new thing i love about Maverick is the multi screen support that now just blows me away. (sad as i am) :)

In the old days (SL, Lion, ML etc) you had a main display and extended (or even mirrored) displays... the main display showed the dock along the bottom and the menu bar over the top of the screen. the extended screen just had a full screen background and nothing else (until you moved an open window into the display)

Now the Maverick way is that in display prefs you still have a main display, but in reality when using the mac, both screens have the top menu bar. this saves scrolling all the way to the main display to select the program options etc. and if you select the secondary monitor with a click of the mouse, that display now shows the dock when you move over the bottom of the screen. The other screen now shows no dock until you click on the desktop again and move over the dock location again and the dock switches back to the original screen.

I love this feature as i have multi monitors on my system and it was always a pain moving over to the master screen to launch apps and edit menus etc.

Good job Apple. :apple:
