I don’t understand the confusion over the pricing. The iPad used to start at $499 for 16gb, and an extra $100 for 64gb. This new model starts at $449 for 64gb, full screen with uniform bezel, TouchID power button, higher RAM, better processor, better screen — if these things don’t appeal to you, buy the 9th generation that is still available. The Pencil compatibility doesn’t bother me because I have a 12.9 M1, so the 10.9 iPad will just be used for reading and non-Pencil use cases.

It was actually $200 more for 64GB.

$499 16GB
$599 32GB
$699 64GB

That said, iPad sales were falling fast and didn't really stabilize until Apple released the $329 iPad.

Just watched a comparison with the Air and man the screen is so much worse. The black are much less black, it looks like some of the Samsung tablets. And it's more reflective. USB C is only 2.0 (hopefully Apple won't do the same with iPhones next year). Wifi is much slower. Speakers are actually worse, was not expecting that.
So many compromises/downgrades compared to the Air, including the 2020 Air....

Wow — I wasn’t aware that the storage tiers were priced that way. I always used to get the 16GB until I went with the Air 2 at 64GB, but with a trade in.

I wouldn’t say that the $329 iPad affected revenue in a significant way. Unit sales seemed to be up after it was introduced, but revenue was down. The Pro lineup introduced in 2018 seemed to change that trajectory. The use case (presumably) changed to where some preferred the iPad Pro to a laptop (or netbook).

The new iPad is a different product from the $329 model, and it could see a similar use case for some. Also keep in mind that the Air and Mini both saw $100 bumps when they moved to power button TouchID, so this is not unprecedented.

. . .

I am really surprised people are not aware of this solution.... (it's not for drawing since, like the crayon, it does not have pressure sensitivity but it supports tilt and the feel is exactly like the pencil 2)

Is this the device your speaking of? I does look like it might be neat.

Or this?

I was at the Apple Store yesterday and looked at the 10th Gen iPad and I liked it. I thought it was perfect for someone who browses the internet and watches tv and movies. The screen was way better than I had read. I was thinking it would be a perfect travel companion. Now the new keyboard for it I thought was a hot mess, almost like someone at Apple said "sh*t we forgot to do a magic keyboard for this."
I also went the the Store and checked out the line up. Currently I have the 2020 A12Z 12.9" iPad (with Magic Keyboard) and 6th gen iPad mini (Smart Folio cover). After playing with the 10th gen iPad with Smart Keyboard Folio, I really like this combination. I agree with the screen, it's better than on paper and I tried to look closer to the glass. The keyboard can be a bit lighter for a more portable experience as I am looking for something to bring while traveling.

Or this?

Yes they are all the same, just different colors, I have the white one. For iPad 10 it's a better solution that the pencil if you don't need pressure sensitivity

I picked up Air 5 for $450 (discounted price). It was no brainer. Dumbest Apple pricing in years for their 10th gen iPad. Clearly an unneeded product in their lineup

Now with the release of the 10th gen iPad it would appear there is not much difference with it and the iPad Air besides the chip and RAM. Or is there more? Would not the 10th gen iPad take away sales of the iPad Air?
My company was waiting for this announcement to make a buy. It ordered 2000 units of the 10th gen iPad.

Add it up, a lot cheaper than the air.

It is not a mistake at all. Lots of people will like this. I stopped by the Apple Store today. The Smart Keyboard Folio is really nice. I like the function key row. It would be better if it were backlit but that’s not a dealbreaker. The screen is perfectly functional. I say this as an owner of the 12.9” Pro with the XDR display. I’m seriously considering getting this as a secondary iPad. For many people this will be perfect as their only iPad.

You do realize the 10th gen iPad will be discounted as well, right?

The $329 9th-gen iPad is probably Apple’s lowest margin “mainstream” device. It is clearly aimed at the education market to compete against Chromebooks. Remember the original iPad was $499, which was seen as shockingly low 12 years ago.

I don't think it's a mistake. It's a nice upgrade (iPad Air style, larger screen, faster chip with 1GB more RAM, landscape camera, landscape stereo speakers, usb-c) over the base iPad-9 for people who don't use a Pencil frequently, or even at all.

I compared the specs last week when buying an iPad for my daughter and unfortunately the specs you listed there simply weren’t worth the extra £200. It might be for others and I say this as an Air user. For what the iPad 9 offers for £299, it’s difficult to even consider the iPad 10 when that’s £499. It’s an odd price point and simply boosting sales of the iPad 9 at this point in time.

I can’t speak for the author of the article, but it’s not as good for notetaking/sketching as it has the older and (much) worse Pencil (with the weird charging solution as well). I guess if you take ‘creativity’ to mean photo/video editing, then the superior display and processor of the Air might be significant too.

Not huge differences for sure - it’s not much worse than the Air - especially if you don’t use the pencil, and like the colours. But it’s not much cheaper either.
I've got both Pencils, and the second revision is not so demonstrably superior that it's fair to call the first generation 'much worse.' While second-generation charging is convenient, first-generation isn't weird. So far as creativity goes, I'd argue that's much more due to the skill of the user rather than the medium they use, especially as the Air is not so significantly ahead that the base iPad is pointless (I have an M1 iPad and a 10.5, so I've got some experience with this).

the issue is not just the pencil itself, it's the pairing for which you need a cable (plus adapter) to use it on the iPad and every time the pencil battery discharges completely or the bluetooth is cut. On the go it might be a hassle

I can count the number of times I've had to re-pair my Pencil on one hand in over four years. If it's that much of a dealbreaker, perhaps a prospective iPad 10 buyer shouldn't get a Pencil at all.

Perhaps because you were using it at home only with an external charger or because you were charging it from the iPad itself (the latter is no longer possible without a cable now, which can be annoying on the go).
They shouldn't buy a pencil 1 indeed, but a pencil 2 knock-off, which is much better (other than for drawing)

You can buy USB-C to female Lightning cables, so you don't even need an adapter.

there is no such thing, you need to create it with a cable plus the new adapter
Yeah...I'm sure you're right.

No, I was and am frequently on the go.
