Or get the Mini 6 with its 60hz refresh rate, jelly scrolling, dreadful battery life and poor speakers. What on earth are Apple playing at with their iPad range??

We don't know, no one has even tested the Pencil's Lightning adapter with a regular lightning cable.
it has already been tested with the older female adpater plus a lightnig to USBC cable, all purely Apple stuff, and it didn't work, which means that the new adapter is specifically needed

which means you were probably plugging it into the iPad, while now you need a cable with the adapter
And? So what? If a prospective buyer can't handle a small cable, then they have much bigger problems. You will no doubt be surprised to hear that I miss being able to easily charge my second-generation Pencil from something aside from the iPad. Everything has tradeoffs, and were I in the market for a new iPad, I would not have an issue with the iPad 10 using the first-generation Pencil. If it bothers you - fantastic. Don't buy it. There are plenty of other choices out there, both in and out of the Apple ecosystem.

A $15 pencil 2 knock-off would do the job perfectly for me if I were in the market for that iPad (and it works on every iPad except the first 2 generation pro and charges via USB C)

Then recommend that, as you like. I make use of the pressure sensitivity of the Pencil every day, and will recommend it for people who want more than basic use.

the second revision is not so demonstrably superior that it's fair to call the first generation 'much worse.'
Well, I must say my own experience has been very different. I really wanted to love the first pencil, it seemed ideal for me (marking student papers, annotating PDFs, etc). But I didn’t find it as useful as I’d thought, for the reasons I outlined earlier, and quickly tired of it.

I only tried the second gen on a whim as a colleague lent me his. It’s not any one thing, but an accumulation of refinements that add up. The double tap gesture is especially useful. I’ve never looked back - I use it hours every day.

But each to his own - like with watches, one person’s “this is far too big/slippery etc!” is another person’s “this is perfect!”.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy using the second revision as well; but the difference in usability is, for me, minor, and hardly worth noticing. I use both Pencils extensively throughout the week, for writing, general system usage, drawing, etc., and other than the slightly different balance and size, don't think much about which stylus I'm using.

where hip is spoken
I've got both Pencils, and the second revision is not so demonstrably superior that it's fair to call the first generation 'much worse.' While second-generation charging is convenient, first-generation isn't weird. So far as creativity goes, I'd argue that's much more due to the skill of the user rather than the medium they use, especially as the Air is not so significantly ahead that the base iPad is pointless (I have an M1 iPad and a 10.5, so I've got some experience with this).
That mirrors my experiences as well.

It's common to fall into Apple's marketing hyperbole. When the 1st gen Pencil was released, it was promoted as a game-changer in the consumer tablet space... and rightfully so. It was only after Apple produced the Pencil 2 that suddenly the Pencil 1 became a laggy hot mess.

I know it is popular to dunk on Apple for the way that the Pencil 1 charges. But in everyday use, it takes only a minute or two of charging to get hours of additional use. But to hear the detractors describe it, they're walking around campus with the pencil sticking out of their iPad.

Not a waste. Just confusing.

What will be the base model next year? They surely won’t keep selling the 9th Gen at $329. That would be highway robbery.

Then again, they kept selling the 3rd Gen Apple Watch right up until it lost software updates. So I guess you never know.

I was talking generally, not MR members who turn their nose up at anything that doesn’t have ‘Pro’ in the name.
I bet it will sell decently to people who can afford to upgrade a bit to get the newest style, but not all the way to the iPad Air. And that's really its reason for existing.

I predict that once Apple releases the next Pencil 3, which will support landscape cameras by having two small magnets instead of one larger centered magnet, the iPad 11 will get it as well.

I wonder if most of the negative criticism around this iPad could have been avoided if Apple introduced this iPad as a new line rather than being the 10th gen. It is fine device, but since they called it the 10th gen, people are expecting/wanting it to be the cheap base model iPad. Now, a new line probably isn't exactly what we need either, but would people have looked at this iPad differently if they called it something like an "iPad SE"? It wouldn't be much different than Apple's phone lineup that they currently sell (14 Pro/14 Pro Max, 14/14 Plus, 13/13 mini, SE, 12).

14 Pro/14 Pro Max ~ iPad Pro 11"/12.9"
14/14 Plus ~ iPad Air
13/13 mini ~ iPad mini
SE ~ iPad 10th gen (or "iPad SE")
12 ~ iPad 9th gen

So is this the new ‘entry level’ iPad or just another filler iPad between the iPad 9 and the Air? It’s too expensive to be entry level and the Air is considerably better for just a bit more. In my opinion this iPad should have been £399.

I think its an in-between, but it may become the base model because the EU has said USB-C on everything.

Now with the release of the 10th gen iPad it would appear there is not much difference with it and the iPad Air besides the chip and RAM. Or is there more? Would not the 10th gen iPad take away sales of the iPad Air?
Base model iPad would always make up ~80% of all shipped iPads. The price pretty much dictates that.

The 10th didn't add much usefulness for me in functionality or features, preferring the original design of the 9th with bezel and home button, and slightly smaller size. But the 10th is still a worthy base model.
