I came from an 11” to a 12.9” this year and sold my MBP since I can do all my work from an iPad and use it comfortably for consumption when needed. what helped was realizing I use my 11 Pro Max as a consumption tablet device very, very often, for articles, ebooks in Apple Books (scroll mode!), and often for short video consumption. With that in mind, my 11 Pro Max is my default computing device, my 12.9 IPP with MK my heavy duty computing device, and my Apple Watch is my ultralight on the go interactions device (running, during my commute, etc).

Well I had thoughts today where I was second guessing my idea to get the new MK for the 12.9” in case I decided to upgrade to an 11” in a years time. But I’ve spent time working through it and chatting on here also to get my thoughts out. I now believe that I am in the 12.9 camp to stay. My iPad Pro 10.5” feels small to me now and the ASK feels a bit small too. It does feel nice and light to hold and travel with though. My 12.9 has a beautiful big screen which is great for many apps. The 12.9 is also great for multitasking, plus the on screen keyboard is better on the 12.9 as it has an extra row and better layout. I have been using the Brydge Pro with it and find that it is a great keyboard size. I don’t like attaching and removing the iPad from it though as it’s quite tight to do so. I have a clear skin on the back of my iPad and a glass screen protector on the front which wouldn’t be helping with that though. I find that I have less trouble switching between the Brydge Pro for the 12.9 and my other laptop keyboards though, where as it wasn’t as easy to switch to the 10.5” ASK today.
Anyway, I was just finding that my 10.5” felt too small today and I therefore think that the 11” would not be too far from that. My 12.9 no longer feels so large and I love the screen size. I guess that I just had thoughts that an 11” would be more portable, but I’ve now worked out that there would be different trade off for me and I’d prefer the 12.9 so as to not compromise on those. If I get an 11” down the track, it will be as a secondary device to my 12.9 (to replace my 10.5) and most likely used without a keyboard.
Thanks everyone who helped out today. It helped me to work this out and I feel better about going ahead with a MK order for my 12.9 now.

Good choice, I did just the same. :)

I have been working with a 10.5 and a 2018 12.9 since their releases, I use the smaller for mostly at home media/web usage. The 12.9 I use a lot for work. We pass tech like iPads down throughout the family, so my wife who had a 9.7 iPP for media at home, was having some battery issues so I upgraded my 10.5 to the 11 and she has my old 10.5. Tbh I miss the 10.5, the square edges and thinner design of the 11 make it less comfortable to use sitting on couch, especially one handed, could also be lack of bezel space too. Anyway, I am a big fan of owning and using both. I don’t know if I would cut to just one. I have the MK for the 11, it is awesome, but I may return and get it the MK for the 12.9. I didn’t order that one straight away, as I already have the ASK for the 12.9 and felt it would be a waste as I already have that keyboard and I use the pencil a lot with the bigger one, but like I said the keyboard is so awesome. If I keep the MK for the 11, I can see using the 11 a lot even for media while in the keyboard on lap while on couch.

If my wife didn’t ask when I was upgrading, so she could have my 10.5, I would have sat this upgrade out until next one and just got the keyboard for the 12.9 then. I honestly think you have the best of both worlds, no need to upgrade the 2018, get the MK and it will feel like an entirely new device, and keep the 10.5, I think that may be my all time favorite iPad i have ever owned. I had debated switching with wife and taking the 10.5 back and let her have the 11, but having the ability to only need one type of charger USB-C and the pencil is easily interchangeable between iPads and now having the MK, I will be keeping the 11 and her the 10.5, but still miss the 10.5.

Ok, it is late here, and I think I am just rambling on at this point.

I went on the struggle bus with this in 2018 and am currently on the same bus in 2020. In 2018, I decided to get the 11- mostly because I couldn’t find a perfect enough 12.9- for me, the 12.9 because it has a bigger panel, opens it up to more panel issues. I found a perfect 11 and stuck with that. I sold it a few months ago as I usually do before any major Apple release. After more attempts that im willing to admit, I have a 12.9 and an 11 in basically 9.5 almost 10/10. No warping on the aluminum, no bending, no dead pixels or backlight bleed. Good white uniformity, just perfect.

I got the MGK. I love the 12.9 screen, but if the MacBook 14 comes out this year, I think I’m going to purchase that. The iPad as of now cannot produce a convincing desktop experience to me because of the screen projection on the monitor. Just doesn’t look or feel right. In that instance, with a MBP 14- the 11 is a much better compliment as the 12.9 is unwieldy as a tablet. As a desk item, it’s much better than the 11 but if this isn’t replacing your primary computing source then the 11 is better I think.

even though I have a Gaming PC, I’d like to get an office dedicated workstation powered by Macos and a Mbp and I’m feeling the 11 will compliment that setup better than the 12.9

all that being said, I got a few days on the return policy and if I let go this 12.9 after repeated attempts at finding a good one, it’s going to leave a hole so trying to make the right decision. I’m hoping Apple releases info on the 14 mbp soon!!

I have an 11, but I want the 12.9, but then I would have to have the new keyboard. But selling the 11 would be difficult, so i'm stuck.

As the guy above said, i'm on the struggle bus.

I was considering downsizing to the 11 from my 12.9. There are a lot of positives with going smaller, portability and weight and it looks less ridiculous using it to take notes in meetings. Also for my uses, illustration, design and writing i thought i could live with the smaller size... however i like to stream games from my PC to my ipad with steam link and moonlight, so that use case alone convinced me to stay with the 12.9.

What does "finding a good one" even mean? Do you suffer from OCD?

I don’t find using the 12.9” during meetings ridiculous since lot of people use much larger devices...like 16” screens!

So i am stil using the 12.9" iPad at the moment and i think it is amazing, unfortunately, the magic keyboard did not get in stock at my retailer and they do not respond to my chats At the moment. A other retailer got it in stock but they were charging 470 euro which is insane!

i guess team iPad 12.9“ go go go! ;)

Has anyone bought/tried both the MK for the 11 inch and 12.9? I am coming from the 2017 10.5 and am looking to upgrade. I have been debating if I should try a bigger iPad this go-round. I did try the magic keyboard on on the 11 inch and while good, it seems cramped and I bumped the screen a lot while typing. I have been wondering if it would be much better on the 12.9 with a MK.

I have both at home. The 12.9 is definitely a better typing experience overall (the 11 is still very good)

I would base my decision on what size iPad works for you not about the keyboard.

Yes, I bought both. It's really about use case, what will you be doing with it? Yes, if you were typing on the 11 MK all day or even 1 hour its cramped compared to the 12.9. I am sure you would get use to it and never no the difference.

Is the 12.9 more out of the way at all with regardings to bumping it while typing?

I've been wanting to try the bigger one for something different. I thought I just might like it but honestly nothing I do NEEDS it. I was mainly just wondering if typing might be much better on the bigger one and if so, that could be another reason I might want to give the bigger one a try. But my iPad use is mostly consumption with occasional productivity.

Yes, it definitely is. There is less overhang; I’ll have to take a look later but I also feel like the screen hovers over the numbers row more on the 11”? I also think I don’t use as steep of an angle on the 12.9 compared to the 11

No, trying to decide which one I want to keep. I was going to keep both but don't have a need for both. I have MBP 16 and I keep leaning towards the 12.9 but when I get in bed at night I kinda wish I had the 11. I can make the 12.9 work, I just rest the 12.9 with the MK on my stomach - MK sits nicely. It works, but it's big.

I swear I cringe every time I read the word "unwieldy" for a 12.9" tablet (especially from 11" iPP owners).
If 12.9" iPP is "unwieldy" for you then just buy the ipad mini or 9.7" iPad! 11" is not much less "unwieldy" than the 12.9" iPP

Uhhh lol when you can’t hold something without worrying about size, unwieldy is the perfect word. 11 and 12.9 are definitely different use cases

Thanks for that. Would you be able to take photos of them from the side by chance to visually see the difference? I was watching some YouTube videos and they mentioned that even on the 12.9, they still bump the screen so it may not be that much farther back to make too big of a difference. If I was considering the bigger one for the sake of better typing, I'm worried it may be a minor improvement at best.

I don't bump the screen at all typing on the 12.9.
