We need another poll that shows how many people are:
- previous 10.5 user going 12.9
- previous 12.9 user going 11
- previous 12.9 staying 12.9
- previous 10.5 staying 10.5/11
- first timer 11
- first timer 12.9

I think 12.9 is very popular because many got the 10.5 in the past, and now want something different. My question is: is that because 10.5 was not enough? Or because they want a new/different experience?

Why is viewing in standing position in portrait mode also difficult on the 12.9" ? Why would that be difficult ??

I find it awkward using iPads while standing up. Even the 11" feels heavy/offbalanced when holding it in 1 hand and navigating with the other but that's just me, others seem to have no issue using them this way. I've never been comfortable using the tablet in any way which requires me holding it up. I always use the keyboard cover as a stand whether on my lap or desk.

Keep in mind the larger the device the further out the center of gravity gets when holding it with 1 hand, so even something the same weight but larger in side feels heavier when not held in the center.

I'd suggest going to the Apple store as soon as it opens while it's still fairly quiet, find a 12.9" that has the longest security cable or ask them if they can unlock one of them so you can try holding it the way you see yourself using it at home, or even sitting down with it at the store to get a better idea. They've unlocked ipads for me during quiet time so I could walk around with it.

... or do what I did, buy both, use them side by side for a few days and return the one you like less :)

If I could I'd have kept both.

Side Note:
While I mostly like the new keyboard cover I miss having the keyboard and back cover as 2 separate items. I'd sometimes detach the keyboard and having a cover on the back not only protected it from scratches/dents but more importantly added grip while holding.

With the new cover it's easy to pull the iPad out and see it's beautiful bare design, but I find it very slippery to use without a back cover and folding the keyboard behind means feeling the keys in the back which doesn't feel good.

I may replace it with Logitech's Slim Combo when they come out with one for the new size.

+smaller screen makes pictures looks very crisp.

Yes I would want to believe it coz, the resolution is different for the 12.9" and even higher for the 11" though the PPI remains the same for both the devices.

+webpages seems to be better optimized for the size.

Are you really sure on this ? Coz people seem to be saying exactly the opposite saying web surfing on the 12.9" is much richer experience than on the 11" !

You seem to be really struggling to either chose 11 or 12.9 inch.
People can give you hints, opinions etc.. but it’s all based on their use case and experience.

You have to go to an Apple store, grab both devices and give it some time.
Or perhaps order both and do the same at home.

It depends on the website. Some have too much white space on the 12.9 but others show a lot more content so it depends on how the website is formatted.

My experience with G1 12.9 was that it was great to start with, and I mean a few months too but then over time somehow it was just too unwieldy and I longed for a smaller device which was great for travelling too, the so called 50-50 split issues does not bother me, we are only talking about a swipe to get to the next app, not a big deal for me at least. Agreed G1 is bigger than G3 but the overall dimensions will not feel that different. Different story if you use it mostly on a desk though, perhaps with folio or external keyboard.

No matter what PPI you have, if you have a poor image and put it on a huge screen it will look less crisp than if you have it on a small screen. Bigger screen requires better cameras...

It was my experience that the webpages I visited had higher percentage white space on 12.9 than 11. Don't see why they can't just scale it up, but I guess there is some reason for this. Anyone knows?

I feel so confused on what sizes feels right to me. Its like one hurts and the others just not quite there.

Almost ready to return them and stick with just a MBP. Life is so simple this way!

Here is the difference here ... look at how my thumb just rests on the 11 but is pressured on the 12.9. As I saw someone state earlier, it’s not the weight, it’s the center of gravity that messes with you. In the end, the 11 is sooo light it’s like holding nothing and with little effort. Over time the 12.9, for me, will get tiring. I love it though ... it’s currently in my truck ready to return to Apple.

I got the same set up but have the 12.9 iPad Pro instead. But I came from an iPad Pro 1st gen so am used to it.

Received my 11 inch today. Very happy with the size. Got my XS Max 6.5 inch, my 15 inch macbook pro, so the 11 inch fits perfectly in between. Anything larger would take away the comfort of holding it on the couch or the ease of portability. Which will be my main use for the iPad.

I went from 10.5 to 12.9 and it’s due to wanting bigger screen as now I have my max I can use that for times when I wa t portability

Plus 12.9 is used or will be for work too as a laptop type replacement for me via keyboard

I was 99% sold on the 11 until they checked them out at the Apple Store and it became a harder choice. The real estate on the 12.9 is amazing, especially running two apps in split screen, which is nowhere near as functional on the 11.

You're totally right about the center of gravity and weight, which is why I'm going to go with the 11. Since the iPad will be my second, casual computer for web browsing, emailing, etc., the 12.9 would get cumbersome quickly while the 11 really does feel like holding nothing.

[doublepost=1541874072][/doublepost]I directly compared web pages on both models, and there is a noticeable difference. The 12.9 looks like what you would get on a desktop, while the 11 inch looks like it is optimized for a tablet, meaning it shows less content but it's easier to navigate and click. I'd say web pages on the 12.9 look better, but it might be more practical in actual use on the 11 inch.

I think part of the tension and pull is that we tend to associate bigger with better but that’s not necessarily true when you factor in portability, cost and usage.

It’s funny cause the opposite was true years ago. The first portable phones were ridonkulously huge, and so were laptops & computers. Then as tech improved, it was all about smaller. Then when devices became as small as they could, the trend reversed. Now it’s all about bigger phones & iPads.

For anyone who is studying and will use the ipad for taking notes, which size did you go for?

It is a battle. The versatility and form factor of the 11 is hard to get over. However for someone depending on split screen and note taking I think one needs to look at the benefits of the 12.9.....its just more practical for note taking and utilizing split screen landscape.

I had the second generation IPP 12.9 and found it too unwieldy. I hold my devices fairly close, and it was a real challenge to view the whole iPad in portrait mode. I had to constantly raise my head. I also found it way to heavy. I hardly used it. The 11 is much better FOR ME. I don’t annotate PDF’s. I hardly ever use split view. I sometimes use it for MS Office 365. Mainly Word. Everyone’s use and preferences are different. There is no best answer. I might feel differently, if I did not have an iMac and was using my iPad as a computer replacement.

I dropped in the Apple store near me this morning and finally got to see the new 11 and 12.9 in person. The new 12.9 just seems much smaller than my 2nd gen 12.9. I do have a case on the back of mine that does add some bulk to it, but it is noticeably smaller. I was leaning towards the 12.9 without seeing them and now, for me, it's an easy choice - if I decide to upgrade. With the 2nd gen 12.9, ASK and pencil, I'm trying to decide if I should pick it up and trickle down my old iPad to my wife or just stick with what I have until there is a more compelling reason to upgrade (new version of photoshotp, iOS 13, more peripheral device support, etc.).

Who am I fooling, of course I'll pick one up...

I love my 11in for easier portability etc, but was in the sotore today and that 12.9 looks really nice. I might have left with one if my wife didn’t kick my ass right there on the spot :(. Ohh well I still have my 11in one.

Same for me, though I do annotate PDF’s regularly, and find the 11 in portrait perfect for that.

Got mine thanks to a big deal. Paid 120€ less. I‘ve picked the 11 now because 200€ more for the bigger one was too pricey for me. I‘m happy now. The deal made the decision for me.

You added nothing useful to the thread, just anonymously told the internet about your deal. :p
