What if someone wants a perfection for both, for using the iPad in Portrait aswell as the Landscape mode ? Which one would that be 12.9" or 11" ?

This is what really makes me torn about it in general.

I've used the 9.7" for 16 months and then the 12.9" for 17 months. The 9.7 I loved for holding in portrait and more casual browsing or typical iPad use. The 12.9 I find I keep mostly in landscape and on the keyboard cover most of the time. I really want both of those things - and I think the 11" is best for that kind of combination. Though seeing how much the 12.9" reduced in size and how gorgeous the screen is it makes the decision so damn tough.

But I think I have started to see a way out of his, till the 10.5" was released last year in 2017 I always thought that the 9.7" iPad Pro of 2016 was a perfect device with its weight and form factor then came the 10.5" in 2017 and again Apple struck Gold by making the user experience outstanding by striking a right balance of portability and how much the screen display can be extended and so I thought that the 10.5" was the perfect solution for my needs. So if someone is very satisfied with the 2017 10.5" display I think 11" is the way to go. I do know that people are saying 12.9" has completely been changed in form and size so you are getting almost 1/3 more size in a much smaller form factor, but yet I can imagine it would still be bigger. As some guys have pointed out. Yes split screen and watching videos on the 12.9" would be much greater experience but as a complete device I am sure the 11" would be perfect. Albeit I am yet to see both the devices in person as it is still not arrived in my part of the world. So my last word would be after I see them in person.

12.9 is too heavy to hold in portrait mode for any extended period of time, simple as that. As someone who reads lot of PDF, books and magazines on the iPad, 12.9 isn’t even an option for me

I saw the 12.9 in person at the Apple store and will say the bezel reduction is a massive improvement over the laughably large original iPad Pro 12.9

I have a 2nd gen 12.9 and use it in portrait mode all the time for reading. The smaller size of the new one would be better, but the size of my current hasn’t bothered me.

Even with the current 2018 12.9" iPad Pro form factor ? Do you still think that is a problem ?

And what do you guys think about the disadvantage that the 11" has of not being able to offer a complete and as rich a experience as the 12.9" for split screen functionality ??

Perhaps add some dumbbells to order? ;) I have spent hundreds of hours reading in portrait mode on the gen 1 and gen 2 12.9”. The gen 3 is a feather.

The choice really comes down to what you are willing to get used to. Have been using the 12.9 since it launched and upgraded to the new 12.9. Use it when onsite to carry around, so have it one hand holding it quite a bit for long periods of time. You get used to it.

But it is a jump in price. For me it was worth it. For some the extra screen space may not be worth the premium over the 11” version. I think both sizes are great, and wish they would upgrade the mini to use the pencil. More choices for people.

I know people keep bringing up the split screen issue, but I went to the Apple store and compared the two. Sure. The split screen is bigger on the 12.9”...but duh...EVERYTHING is bigger on the 12.9”! Lol. Seriously tho, you can do split screen on the 11” and it looks totally fine to me. I know people like to say “But it’s not full size iPad apps”...but come on... It’s not like you can’t see anything. It’s just smaller. And you can have a third floating app over the split screen too... Just like on the 12.9”. Again...just smaller. Lol. Split screen is not a huge thing for me anyway. I like to focus on one thing at a time. Besides, I find you can easily swipe to diff open apps just as easily as using split screen. But hey, that’s me.

That's a good point. And the other bigger question is how many times one is going to keep using the split screen functionality ? But all the time I would imagine !!

From reading the comments I would have assumed the 12.9" would be the clear winner in the poll.

I exchanged my 12.9" for the 11" and have no regrets.

I went to the Apple Store to play with the 12.9. Wow, that thing is awesome. It really is the ultimate iOS device, but I can't see myself being comfortable using that on the couch or in bed. I'd feel like I am holding a tv screen in front of me.

This is exactly how I felt with the 12.9" in my lap. I love my 11" iPad!

I'm thinking of getting the 11 i was originally going to get the 12.9 due to everyone saying it's a lot smaller, i bought and returned the 12.9 previous gens before they were just too big. But looking at the comparison vids out there i think it still is, i think the 11 is the sweet spot and something i can still carry about, now i have to decide storage. i always went large on my iPads. I went 256 on my XS Max and 204 is still sitting unused, this time i was thinking can i get by with a 64gb and i think i really could i mostly stream all my media, either from Apple music or in Plex, I don't take too many pictures with the iPad, it's mostly used as a couch device for reading, comics etc i wish apple would have started with 128gb.

I think in most cases people would settle and for most the 256GB variant is enough storage and a sweet spot since Apple does not offer 128GB storage which would have been ideal.

Price/quality ratio, the 256gb is the best deal. For about $100 more you get 4x the storage of the 64gb model.
The other options only give you double.

When exactly do you hold your iPad in one hand? Serious question.
You asked someone else, but I’ll say that I hold my iPad one-handed often. Standing up and writing on-screen; presenting from it; showing people things and pointing to stuff on screen; swiping and scrolling through news feeds. I’m still torn and will be until my return window is closed, but I’m sticking with the 11 for its ‘intimacy’.

I think this is reasonable, although I agree you need to see them in person and each person needs to reach his/her own conclusion. I personally was wowed by the bigger screen and that's what I went for, but I am still thinking of returning a 12.9 I picked up yesterday for the 11 inch. The 12.9 is still reasonably light and when you look at that beautiful screen side by side with the 11 inch, the 11 inch looks a little small. It's sort of like going to a Best Buy and looking at larger televisions. No doubt the larger TVs are more immersive, but you have to consider the size of the room you are watching in.

If you are trying to use the iPad as essentially a laptop where it is going to be on the smart keyboard, etc., the 12.9 is great. But so far, I have found it (for me) to be a bit big for casual use around the house and I suspect I would prefer the lighter smaller form for commuting and reading on a train, etc. It just seems a little awkward in my lap, and slightly too big as a "grab and go" device.

I do like seeing more information on the large screen, the 12.9 would be terrific for sheet music and it is great for photos, but still I find the majority of my use is fairly casual and coming from a 9.7 inch, even the 11 inch screen is a nice change. There is no wrong or right answer. But if you asked me today, after playing with the 12.9 for only one day, I would say that, for me, the 12.9 seems just a little too big and the 11 inch seems like it would be more comfortable to use on a day-to-day basis, even though there are definitely things that I do where I appreciate the larger screen. I plan to re-assess after a little more time with it and may change my position, but that is where I am coming out at the moment.

For people who are trying to justify that the 9.7", 10.5" and now the 11" is the max display that should accomodate decent usability in terms of user experience which offers good portability also. This is a side by side comparison of the 2016 9.7" iPP, 2017 10.5" iPP, and the 2018 11" iPP if you see in this picture the 11" iPad Pro infact offers an inch or two more display keeping the same compact form factor and portability so these three are in the same family. Just Incase if it helps Someone decide things.

the third is the comparison I was looking for (coming from the 9,7). I was not sure if 11 is a big improvement over the 9,7, but your pic is prove enough. thx

I have just read through the 19 pages of this thread and I went to the store to see the 11" and 12.9" Friday, and I am still so undecided on which size to buy.

I have an Air 2 I use for simple games and control Spotify. I have an iPhone 8 I do a surprisingly high amount of reading and browsing on, so I only take the iPad with me out for overnight travelling, and in those cases I use it for browsing, Netflix and mail. I also have an MBP 15" I use at home for most tasks the iPhone is too small for. The Air 2 has very little use.

The thing is I think that the iPad Pro with ASK and pencil will not only be a replacement for the Air 2, as I assume it is a better device, i.e. screen and performance. So I think I will use it sometimes instead of the MBP at home for writing, Netflix and maybe photo editing, and reading and browsing on it instead of using the iPhone.

Not even sure what I'm asking from you guys, other than help to decide - haha. First world problem...

It would be helpful to me if someone coming from Air 2 can comment on their use of iPad Pro so far, either the 11" or the 12.9". Also a picture might be useful, and maybe also some real life experience of the weight differences between either models.

Thanks in advance!

It isn't always an easy decision (although I guess for some people the decision is obvious). As you can see from my post above, I bought the 12.9 and am still considering the 11 inch instead.

I am coming from an Air 1. How much photo editing do you do (advantage to 12.9)? And is your iPad likely to be your primary device for Netflix or do you watch on a larger TV? Are you going to be taking the iPad out of the house much or is it really going to be used as a home device? And why do you find you are not getting much use out of the Air 2? Is it because you prefer the larger MBP screen?

I know I am not answering your question directly, but by answering some questions like these, perhaps you can determine what things are most important to you and whether ultimately the smaller form factor is more or less important to you than the additional screen size. The weight difference isn't huge, although the ASK does add a bit. For me, the size/weight together just seems a bit much for up close browsing and use on the lap. But as I said, that opinion may change ;) Sorry I can't be more help!

One of the main reasons I went with the 12.9 is because I have an iPhone XS Max, which for me is big enough to do lots of on the go work. When it comes to reading, browsing and emails, the 11’ almost felt redundant to the phone. The 12.9’ is significantly reduced in size from the previous gen, and carrying it around isn’t much more cumbersome than the 11’. You’re still going to need a bag for both- only a slightly bigger one for the 12.9’.

So for those with portability as a main consideration, consider how you will take your iPad around. If it’s in a bag, the size and weight difference between the two isn’t worth the downgrade in screen size.

Let me tell you that I always went for bigger storage, but since most of the data can be stored in cloud, I just need 20GB on my 128gb iPad Pro 9,7. that‘s why I picked the 64gb Pro now. I have 5000 photos on my iPad via iCloud and I have Apple Music.

This... I have a family of four, and we each have at least 2 Apple devices (some have 3). Let’s say we upgrade each device on average every 2-3 years, and the minimum storage bump to the next level is $125. Over a 5 year period that would be roughly 20 devices, which would equate to paying $2500 of extra onboard storage over a 5 year period, and that’s being conservative!

We also have 2TB of iCloud storage with our shared family plan for $10 month. Over a 5 year period, that equates to $600 in monthly storage fees. $600 vs at least $2500 - you do the math.

I use 32/64GB on my iPhone, and only 24/64GB on my iPad. Granted my Wife and Daughter tend to use more, we have had no problem making everything fit by leveraging iCloud. So yes, while it’s only $100 or $150 more to go to the next storage level to get a better “value” per device, you end up paying much more in the long run, rebuying storage over and over again across multiple devices!

Tim
