To be honest, this sounds leas like a product comparison and more like you trying to buttress the decision you’ve already made. You can simply like the 12.9 and just leave it at that. You don’t need to try so hard.

They’re not THAT different.

Well may be my last message sounded more like i am defending my choice and purchase and I apologize for that. I may have been over excited with the discussion.

But I honestly feel Apple could have marketed the 2 products differently. It would have helped their sales even more.

I think apple is testing the waters to see what sells more. My guess is the 11” will still
Sell more that the larger model outside of the macrumours community.

Just came from the store. The 11” pros look positively tiny next to the now normal looking 12.9” pros. The 11” looks like a mini!!
It's because the table in the Apple Store is really large and the whole Apple Store is usually very spacious. You will feel different when you take it home. Personally I think that the 11-inch size is very good and it's a very good balance between portability and screen size, although sometimes when I'm at home, I do hope that I've got the 12.9". If I have a lot of money, I would have bought both, but given that the only difference between them is the screen size, it doesn't seem to be very wise to buy twice... :p

I use my iPad a lot while out and about - going from a 10.5 and having swapped the 11 to 12.9 to try out the bigger screen.

It’s great for sitting down or use when indoors. Watching videos or reading magazines on the larger screens is a treat. I have not edited photos on it yet as the programs I use are not available.

Given the fragility of the device - I have a real concern wwalking about with the bigger screen and using it outdoors or when travelling.

The larger size without a folio case quite slip prone, but any safety covers make the thing even larger / heavier which makes it pointless to me as a mobile device. Nude in a bag it is very likely to bend. So for me one might as well have a thin laptop.

So it really depends on your usage.

I was really torn between the two sizes, eventually opted for the 11“ - and yesterday I went traveling with the thing for the first time, and was so glad I chose the smaller size, it feels just right when on the go, at the airport or flying in a ****** small plane like from Easyjet like I did yesterday, there would’ve been absolutely NO space to use the bigger one comfortably. Since you’re not even allowed to carry a backpack in addition To your suitcase, I was really happy not to have to carry around the big iPad. Still i keep dreaming about the bigger screen :D

Still testing both models trying to decide. I’ll use one for a couple days and then switch and then end the day holding them side by side and scratching my head.

Can anyone speak to their experience flying with the 12.9?

Having used both, the way I see it is this: if the ipad is your primary computer, then 12.9.

If you have / use a laptop in addition to your iPad —> go 11.

I travel for work and I always have my laptop. A 12.9 ipad becomes redundant because if I want a bigger device then laptop is better for all use cases. 11 inch comes in handy for quick usage and affords me the flexibility of a smaller device that the 12.9 does not.

I am really still looking for some more examples (Screenshots) of how APPS look compact view and full view in split screen on the 12.9" and 11"

I've seen a few posts now from people saying that they are going for the 12.9" because they expect Apple to make changes in iOS 13 that will make the iPad a better "laptop replacement" and presumably at that point they would rather have a larger screen and would be sorry they purchased the smaller 11". This may be true, or it may not. And in any event I assume iOS 13 is a year away?

I'm not suggesting that someone who prefers the larger screen shouldn't get a 12.9". However, my own experience has shown that making decisions based on what I expect Apple or another company to do rarely works out as I anticipate.

I think it makes more sense to buy for today's use and make adjustments as needed down the road based on real facts rather than conjecture. If your work requires a laptop, I suggest it makes more sense to buy a laptop. If an iPad does everything you need and you can perform your work better with a larger screen, then that's what makes sense for you. And if you feel the smaller form factor better suits your usage, the 11 inch is the answer.

But I would be careful buying a 12.9" (or an 11" Pro for that matter) primarily because one thinks that there will be changes to make it more like they want it to be.

Just my 2 cents. YMMV.

In Hong Kong we don’t have the option to buy what you want and try it at home for 14 days and then come back to return.

Once you buy it, whether you open the box and activate it or not, it is not returnable.

Lol. So when you buy something from Apple in Hong Kong, you have to be sure what you want to get.

Just imagine if that would also happen in the US. Lol.

You guys have it easy. You can buy either take it home then return it and try another and then return it.

There are a few apps that take advantage of the larger screen size including GarageBand instruments. I gig live with mine Very glad I bought the 12.9” and can’t imagine ever buying a smaller one again.

Keyboard is closer to normal size, too.

Not to forgot it is smaller than the 12.9” form previous generations.

So it has a big screen with smaller form factor. This is what we needed and Apple has delivered.

Yes the 12.9” keyboard is so much better. Not so cramped up like with the small 11” model.

I think people ARE being careful and buying the machine they want, but considering iOS 13 (Beta usually available in June) to even further enhance the iPad Pro experience, given that it's rumored to be a radical evolution of iOS. iOS12 was supposed to be the shift, but because iOS 11 was such a bug-ridden cluster-bomb of an operating system, rendering my phone near unusable (for example), Apple decided to postpone it in favor of cleaning up underlying code. So iOS 13 is supposed to be the feature-enhanced version that iOS 12 was supposed to be originally. (eg. new app drawer, multitasking features)

Not my picture, neither an 11” but a 10.5.
Nevertheless, this shows the exact same difference. Above you see the iPad version of Twitter, below the iPhone version. More apps give you a similar split view experence.

For best split screen go 12.9. If it doesn’t bother you, pick either...

I just took two pictures since I still have both the 11" and the 12.9". Look at the differences, there is much more content in 50/50 split on the 12.9.

Primarily:
  • Safari shows all the buttons at the top (vs. bottom on the 11")
  • Tweetbot shows the sidebar
I am leaning towards the 11". I've had both for about 10 days and although the 12.9 is amazing, the 11" to me is more versatile. I'm not a big/tall person and the 12.9" is just a bit difficult to manipulate and I notice my arms getting tired after holding it for a while.

Below is the 12.9"

And now the 11"

For my use case, I don’t consider weight a significant factor. iPad is usually rested on table, couch, lap, belly or wherever. To me, even the 9.7pro in a case is too heavy to hold it comfortably for a prolonged time. Would have to be maybe half of what it is today to make a relevant difference. But I guess I’ll have to wait for the AR glasses.

Therefore it comes down to size and there I want to try the 12.9 next. Might even go for the 2nd gen if there will be a nice Black Friday deal ...

I bought the 12.9” version. Coming from a 9.7” Air 1, I was shocked at how huge the Gen 2 12.9” was, unweildingly so, to me, I was used to my small 9.7” on my lap and I was in doubt of owning an iPad that huge. The next day I went back to the Apple store to check out the new Gen 3’s. I asked the salesman, hey I see you have up to the 11” on display, where’s the 12.9” ?, his answer was, your looking at it. Wow, I couldn’t believe how compact and thin the new full sized Gen 3 was, amazing. That alone sealed the deal for me and I walked out owning one. It’s been an absolute delight to own and I don’t find the unweilding at all, to the contrary, the screen size seems perfect to me (not to mention the how speedy it operates!). Now I feel the 11” would have been too small :)

Love the 12.9" as I've said, but after using the 12.9" for hours and grabbing the 11", the 11" feels like a cold drink of water in the desert.
