IMO at this moment, there is no point in buying an iPad 12.9 ", at least as long as it has an iOS limiting device. Maybe when Apple prepares iOS, which will compete with Surface

THIS! I tried both and would never stick with the larger unit unless it’s purposefully being used for drawing. Other then that, the portability and limited OS makes the 11” a better option.

Apple should have stuck with the old models of 10.5 en 12.9 inch with the newer soc , and release one new (this) design version of 11.8-12.2 inch. Would have been a no brainer. The choice between screen size , weight, portability is very difficult , there is no sweet spot right now.

Totally agree with this. For me the 11” is too small and the 12.9” is too big.
I’m think of getting a 12” MacBook since it’s an ice balance between both sizes.

Purchased the 12.9 inch originally, but after about a week I notice an issue with it and sent it back and got the 11 inch. Thought to myself the 11 inch may just not be large enough for my aging eye’s, but I was surprised that it was a good move. I saved a couple hundred bucks to boot.

I have just got an iPad Pro 11" 256 GB and I would like to note a few things:

1) If you use a desktop computer with an iPad as your main and only portable device, 12.9" will be a better option with the keyboard case and the pencil. If you use a laptop computer with an iPad as your secondary portable device, then 11" will be great, especially its new 3-2 aspect ratio being a nice sweet spot between 4-3 and 16-9.

Do we have an official Confirmation from Apple like in any article or Apple Website that the new 2018 11" iPad Pro has a 3:2 Ratio and not the traditional 4:3 ratio ? And what does it mean for users ? Does it mean less black bars at the top while watching a Movie which is I thin most movies are encoded in 16:9 Ratio ? Correct me if I am wrong guys ? How is 3:2 ratio better than 4:3 Ratio that Apple has been using all these years in its Previous generations iPad Pro's !

iPad Pro 12.9: 11.09 x 8.46 x 0.23 (633gr)
MacBook: 11.04 x 7.74 x 0.52 (920gr)

A versatile tablet vs a laptop.

I understand the iPad Pro 12.9 might be too big, but is the MacBook really any better?
Solely looking at size/weight, ignoring the difference in performance for now.

Well I moved on from my 10.5 Pro due to the white spot issue and have no interest in getting another since I believe it is a fault inherent in the design. Still using my 2017 12.9 Pro at the moment but I have now decided to try and get back to a single device. Off to the Apple store tomorrow for a play around and try and decide between a new 11 or 12.9. I love the 12.9 screen size but find the device size itself a little ungainly and actually preferred the 10.5 for casual use.
Worst case I will get an 11 and keep my existing 12.9 as well as I did like the function of both iPads but my aim is to downgrade to a single device. I actually think a 12” device would be perfect too but hey ho - it’s not an option today.

It is not 3:2, it is about 4.2 : 3 or something like that, it has about 4,5% extra pixels horizontally vs the old 10.5 iPad Pro which is 4:3. Vertically amount of pixels remained the same as the 10.5 inch.

I went from the Air 2 to the 11”. I ordered it for pickup not really seeing a 12.9”. I walked by the 12.9 on my way out next to the 11” and it made the 11” look so small and I thought “oh %@#, I got the wrong one!”. But at home I’m really glad I didn’t get the 12.9”. With the folio and pencil on it most of the time, the 12.9” would have been too much for me to consider portable.

I, for one, can’t wait to get my 12.9. I think I’m going to be very happy.

I’m a sys admin / DBA and the thought of me not grabbing my computer for an ssh session is making me very happy.

I highly suggest people to compare last years iPad Pro 12.9” with this years 12.9”

You will then appreciate the new 12.9 a lot more.

I this the iPad Pro which Apple should have released long ago.

HK's consumer law sucks. I remember the time when we still had the 14-day return window. The rest was history. Damn scalpers.

Yes but if Apple think carefully they can work something out for us good customers.

I am told by the sales team that the reason they stop taking returns is because people buy many and then to sell and when they don’t sell, they return them back. But then, don’t people do the same everywhere in the world?

The big concern Apple has is that the people in China come down to HK and buy the devices and take the devices back and swap parts with fake parts and return to Apple.

Apple should find a solution for that so that every customer doesn’t get affected. HK consumer council need to put pressure on them. Then only Apple will change their policy. This is discrimination among the consumers.

People in the US can buy 2 or 3 iPads and keep one and that is not a problem for Apple. Over here we are forced to keep whatever we buy. If there is a problem, go to Genius Bar. If you want to change your mind on your purchase go to ebay to sell and come back and buy a new one. Lol.

Again, you seem to be attempting to justify / buttress your decision.

Size is incredibly subjective. Both these iPad Pros have the exact same horse power and can do all the same things. It's the same reasons why people choose the XS vs the XS Max.

They're both fantastic choices that can do all the same things and the only really, truly deciding factor is a person's subjective opinion to the size which is determined by all kinds of different factors that are vastly different from person to person.

I am only trying to let those people know have never seen an iPad Pro 12.9” before to compare previous generations with this year’s model and then you will know what is big.

This year model has a smaller form factor with the same screen size. That is all.

I don’t have a rigid definition for portable. Usually portable to me is something I want to take out of the house, lol. I’m well aware I’m not the norm. My 13” MBP doesn’t leave the house and is the family computer.

I put my iPad in a book bag and ride the train to work. The space to operate in my seat is tight so anything bigger than the 11” is the limit.

But that’s where you’re wrong. People in the US do not do this. The inability to make a decision concerning an Apple product is a behavior solely isolated to members of this MacRumors forum. :p I kid, I kid.

This is my reason for keeping the 11" - portability for me isn't just about will it fit in my bag, but will it fit comfortably in train/plane seat trays. Is it comfortable enough to wander around the office with all day and not too conspicuous in meetings that it creates a barrier between me and others like a laptop does. All very subjective and I've spent way too long thinking about whether to keep the 12.9" or not! :)I still haven't actually taken it back yet though...

I look forward to hearing your results. I’m a sysadmin / java developer and can’t quite see how an iPad would work better than a laptop, but who knows. I try to keep my options open.

All these 12.9 comments saying it’s not portable like you’re hauling a VCR in your hand...everyone has a personal opinion, but even my first gen 12.9 wasn’t bad bringing places I needed it.

Guess after years with a 12.9, going smaller isn’t an option for me

I already do it with my current iPad Pro 9.7. But I think with the bigger screen, Remote Desktop will work better, and so will SSH clients. Thinking of getting Blink.

It definitely won’t be better than my laptop, but I also don’t want to drag my $2,500 MacBook Pro around all the time. Just sheer cost has me worried about that thing.

I mostly got it for when I gotta go to conferences and stuff. But also, love using it as a tablet so that’s why I’m curious to use the 12.9”. I can’t wait. I don’t think the size will be a turn off. Already went to Apple store twice.

Fair enough, that makes sense!

Just getting a tad grumpy of all this portability talk in general. I remember the days luring my 17 inch laptop around. Now even a 12.9 inch tablet seems too much.

I probably should have stopped reading and posting to this thread long ago as it only made me question my conclusion that the 11" is the better option for me (and waste more time unnecessarily). LOL But yesterday I borrowed a relative's 12.9" iPad for the afternoon and spent some more time with it just to revisit the issue.

There are a few things I love about the 12.9" -- the bigger screen is great for video and I really like that it has the numbers row on the keyboard rather than having to switch back and forth when typing on screen. I also think the speakers are a bit better, but while both are good, neither compares to decent headphones or an external speaker(s). Split screen for my use isn't a big deal and honestly I felt like a 50/50 split generally left both screens too small anyway. On the other side, I still felt that it was just slightly bigger/heavier than I prefer and I didn't have the desire to just grab it and look something up quickly or maybe do a bit of surfing on the couch, etc. YMMV

I really wanted to go for the big screen and I suspect there will be times that I wish I had it. But the choice was put into perspective when my wife suggested that perhaps it made sense to get the 12.9" and then buy the regular 9.7" 2018 iPad to take to work/commute, more casual use, etc. I told her that didn't make much sense because I would wind up using the the regular/smaller iPad 90% of the time and would have spent a lot of money on the 12.9" for not much use. I still use my 27" iMac most of the time at home and I don't see having a 12.9" iPad changing that. I still watch movies at home on my Television and I don't see my iPad changing that either. And, as I've mentioned before, I must use my work issued laptop for office and out of office work.

So, I think I answered my own question. It looks like the 11" it continues to be. (I wish I could say the matter is completely resolved, but I will undoubtedly still think about it until my return period is up at the end of next week :))

As has been pointed out, the choice is extremely subjective and the decision for each person comes down to a set of variables that are very specific to that individual, including their particular use, physical size, other devices owned/used, budget and not least important, personal feelings about preferring a larger vs. smaller device.

The numbers row, as mentioned from the poster above is really nice on the 12.9, but now that I have the 11” I now wish Apple would give it a keyboard to include the number keys by reducing the physical size on the screen. I don’t mind the smaller physical size of the keyboard. :(
