New update 12.2 fixed that for me.
I had this issue only with 128GB cards. All my other cards 64GB 32GB and 16GB worked just fine.
I ve just updated to 12.2 and transferring and reading from my 128GB cards is fine! Thank GOD it was so frustrating.
For the record, and if that makes sense to anybody, all SD Cards are Sandisk extreme Pro.
That's great news. Have you found anything in macOS 12.2 that has introduced new bugs? I'm always hesitant to update the OS immediately in case it's a case of "one step forward, two steps back".

Just thought I'd chip in as another voice - it's been a week since I updated to 12.2, and it does appear to have fixed my SD card reader problems. The cards I struggled to get working before have been working consistently all week. Thank you to the background Apple engineers fixed this!

12.2.1 has also fixed my SD card slot problems as well. Getting better and more consistent speeds too.

Something else I did that did wonders to my cards (even before updating to 12.2.1) was using the official SD card tool from the SD Association to refresh my SD cards: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter

Use the "Overwrite format" option to completely refresh the card. I'd never heard of this tool before, but apparently the OS doesn't clean the card properly when formatting, but their software does.

From their webpage: "formatting tools provided with operating systems can format various storage media including SD/SDHC/SDXC Cards, but it may not be optimized for SD/SDHC/SDXC Cards and it may result in lower performance."

Here's the results from Disk Speed Test on a couple cards:

Samsung 512GB EVO Plus
  • Internal Reader - Disk Speed Test couldn't even run, would just hang
  • USB 3 Card Reader - 18.7MB/s (Write) 91.8MB/s (Read)
  • Internal Reader refreshed with SD Card Formatter - 98.9MB/s (Write) 90.0MB/s (Read)
  • Internal Reader after being refreshed and OS 12.2.1 - 91.3MB/s (Write) 90.1MB/s (Read)

Samsung 64GB EVO Plus
  • Internal Reader - 28.3MB/s (Write) 89.4MB/s (Read)
  • Internal Reader refreshed with SD Card Formatter - 51.9MB/s (Write) 89.2MB/s (Read)
  • Internal Reader refreshed and OS 12.2.1 - 85.8MB/s (Write) 89.1MB/s (Read)

just to add that my speeds have increased after 12.2.1 upgrade on 16" as well.

Sandisk. UHS-II 128GB
Write 213.7MB/s
Read 245.0MB/s

The problem seems to have been fixed.

Speeds compared to USB-3 card adapter
Write 185.2MB/s
Read 219.3MB/s

Anybody else having issues with the SD card reader on the new MBP?

I have several SD cards that the MBP does not recognize but when using Apple's USB-C SD Card reader with the same cards the MBP recognizes them no problem.

Any ideas?
Yes and it is getting worse. I am a professional photographer and my 16" Mac Book Pro Max will not eject an SD card. So when I am editing in three. apps and need to get access to the card slot, I have to save all my work, shut down, reboot and then eject the card. I am going to return this thing if I can - it wastes a lot more time than it saves

What macOS version are you using? Not sure what you meant by “editing in three. apps”, but I don’t recommend working on your files directly from the SD card if that’s what you meant.

I found the SD reader to be slower than my SanDisk dongle (c. 180MB/s vs 240MB/s), and quite slow to preview or open initial files directly from the card, but no issues copying, mounting or ejecting on any of my cards (SanDisk and a couple of Toshibas)

I have the Macbook Pro 14" M1 and three SD cards of which the one I want to use won't work:

Works fine:
- SanDisk Extreme 45MB/s 32GB
- SanDisk Extreme PRO 95MB/s 64GB

Does NOT work at all:
- SanDisk Extreme PRO 280MB/s 32GB

I'm on macOS 12.4 (21F79). Card reader details:

Built in SD Card Reader:
Vendor ID: 0x17a0
Device ID: 0x9755
Subsystem Vendor ID: 0x17a0
Subsystem ID: 0x9755
Revision: 0x0001
Link Width: x1
Link Speed: 5.0 GT/s

fr3drik -

Does the SD card (that won't work in the MBP's slot) work with a USB3 card reader, by any chance...?

I have a Transcend 512 GB SDXC card and it works fine in my 2021 MacBook Pro 16. I just put it in, it showed up and I was able to look around. I then ejected it and removed it. I don't recall having any problems with SD cards on my 2021 MacBook Pro 16 though I admittedly don't use SD cards very often. I have used this card in a variety of Macs for a couple of years. I really like the amount of storage though speed is nothing to write home about.

So, I use an old SanDisk 16GB Extreme Pro 95MB/s #1 in my Canon DSLR. I just noticed that my 2021 16" M1 MBP SD reader is not reading the card consistently, as some photos are not showing up when loading the card in the slot using the Mac Photos App, but then show up after I import the photos that do load. I thought all this was fixed in MacOS 12.2! Any advice?

"Old" seems to be an important word here.

First suggestion: REFORMAT the card.

Second suggestion: If reformatting doesn't correct the problem, REPLACE the card.

Great advice! If replacement is the solution are certain cards/brands, etc working better in the MBPs than others?

Hello, I'm new to the Mac world but I found a work around: https://www.reddit.com/r/macbookpro/comments/wtpgni
I can now access a card that was previously unaccessible and get read speed of about 87.5MB/s

Let me know if this helps!
Your issue seems to be different. You are able to see your card in diskutil list but most of us cannot.

I am still facing this issue 1 year later - has anyone had any luck?

Okay, so i think that I have sort of figured out a workaround..

I realised that by:

going into Settings -> Privacy&Security -> Allow Accessories To Connect -> Set it to Always

After this, it recognises my SD card - otherwise not.

Please report back if this actually got your mac to recognise the card.

Hi there!

I have a specific question about the SD card slot............I am currently looking into a MacBook Pro 14 inch model my question is about the internal storage as it is always a high price to upgrade storage at apple

I researched a little bit you can get a SD Card for storage expansion as a permanent solution.

It is the Transcend 1TB JDL330 JetDrive Lite 330 Expansion Card for MacBook Pro

My question is what are the downsides? I know its slower but are there any flaws to use these ? Like is it always recognized? what are the drawbacks? I don't want to use it as a time machine backup.....I would rather use this for fotos and some media files to store...

so what are the downsides? Or should I not rely on something like this ? since it is unreliable ?

If somebody has some knowledge about this I would highly appreciate your help!

Thanks!

Chris

They are slow but I find them more fragile than thumb drives. I've fried a few of them with copying lots of large files. My guess is that they heat up which can damage them.
