I only tried one, and it worked fine (Nikon camera). My only regret is that the SD card reader isn't one of those spring popped ones, where the card could fit all the way in. Then you could add a 1TB card like a second drive for media.
possible to for someone to create one that's flush? effen ridiculous Apple made it so shallow

I have tried 9 SD cards. When using the MBP SD slot 6 work and 3 do not.
All work when used with the Apple USB-C SD reader. For some reason the dongle is better than the new MBP slot.
The 3 that the MBP cannot read are 128GB cards. The ones that it can read are 64GB.
You got dongled, welcome to the club

Same issues with 14" M1 Pro. Just seems to be super flakey and inconsistent. Half the time it'll recognize the card successfully (though it takes anywhere from 30s to 1m) and half the time it'll throw an error. These are all Sandisk Ultra cards, both XC and HC, that were formatted in my camera. I tried reformatting them w/ the MBP and that didn't seem to make a difference.

All my cards work as expected in my 3 other USB card readers.

I stopped by the genius bar and they seemed to concur. They tried one of my cards in the 4 different computers they had available and reported that one recognized it immediately, one took awhile, and two were not able to recognize it.

They said they hadn't received any kind of bulletin from Apple yet about any issues. They thought it was a software issue that might get resolved with an update. They offered to just replace the machine but I was hesitant to do that given the results of their tests...don't think a new machine is going to make a difference.

Dunno, I have a bit before my return window expires so will see what other info surfaces but that's been my experience so far.

Edit: I have some random 'Netac' branded 8GB HC card that seems to work like a charm, super consistent.
f this, sticking with M1 13 until next year's 14 version

Small update, got my new 64GB Sandisk Extreme PRO SDXC II card with 300MB/s speed, and that is working fine in the SD card slot. Pops right up, can open it and look at photos, navigating via Lightroom is very fast and photos copy over very quick, no issues. So in my case at least it seems the issues are with cards over 64GB in size.

No issue here either with the same card, same results as you. As was written earlier, this is probably a bug in macOS, and not a physical hardware issue.

Whatever the reason, the HDMI has probably been the most disappointing aspect so far on my 14", which means that future compatibility with many new display technologies that are coming up will be out of the window, and that port essentially will become useless and an eyesore within a short time.
It may become useless to you, but there are and will remain for some years many devices using the port as it is.

I contacted support and they have no idea about this issue, made me go over standard but pointless tests (different user, reset SMC, boot in safe mode). I will go to the Genius Bar this week but I don't have hopes they will have a solution.

I tried a Transcend 512 GB and it was fine. I put in a Lexar 1 GB and it said that it couldn't read it but it's probably formatted NTFS (not sure what's on it so I didn't reformat it). I think that there's one other SD card in the house and I will try to find it but I don't see any problems so far.

Hi! I am having the same issue! I literally just bought the MBP 16'' and its super inconsistent when reading the SD cards from the slot. Sometimes it goes smoothly, sometimes it takes ages and sometimes it just straight up crashes; with finder and other apps just not working at all. Sometimes it gives me the 100060 error when trying to copy files into my desktop too. However, when I try it with my SD card reader, everything works perfectly! I tried with both a 16 and 64 GB sands cards, and both had the same issues. Idk if I should try to get it fixed or replaced or just keep it. Ig it depends on if its a software or hardware issue, any tips?

Yes especially so when my company’s projector is suddenly upgraded to 4K @ 120Hz. ?

1GB is probably too old. I had one in 2003 or so ?

I have the same issue with a 128gb san disk card. It is ridiculously slow and makes capture one crash.

so, what do we all think? - is this wide spread on all machines or hardware based on a few scattered machines? I need to decide if I'm going to go through with the return or wait for software fixes.

Anybody else having issues with the SD card reader on the new MBP?

I have several SD cards that the MBP does not recognize but when using Apple's USB-C SD Card reader with the same cards the MBP recognizes them no problem.

Any ideas?
I’m having the same problem on my 14” MBP…128gb SD card in the slot shows up on the computer but it’s so slow, there’s no preview for the photos and it was basically impossible to transfer the photos. Finder also crashed. The card worked perfectly with a dongle. Are people that are having this issue going to replace the machine? Or does it seem to be a common problem that just needs software update rather than a whole replacement?

BASEQI - I already reached out to them, they're getting ready!

Speed: Slow. I've tried two 1TB cards, Sandisk and Lexar. Lexar I tried formatted out of box and got about 30MB/s either way. Formatted as APFS I get a great initial start then it falls and went to 0.1 on the Sandisk but the Lexar started at 200+ (which is obviously cacheing) and fell to a steady 30-40MB/s read/write using Black Magic Speed test (from App Store). Both cards perform a fair bit better in external USB3 adapter at 60-70MB/s.

BASEQI suggest that cards perform better in their adapters, can that happen?

It's not the slow that bothers me, it's the up/down/hang of it all.

Tried the Raspberry Pi Imager to flash PiOS onto a uSD card. When using the internal SD slot, the verify phase fails every time with a read error, on three new 32GB SanDisk Extreme Pro uSD cards (using the uSD to SD adapter that came with the cards). When using an external USB card reader, it succeeds every time, on each card.

Trying to read one of uSD cards in the internal slot (disk4) results in a timeout. Reading it using an external reader (disk5) succeeds. I can only hope this is a driver problem (Monterey 12.0.1) instead of a hardware issue (14" M1 Pro, 10 CPU, 16 GB).
Code:
$ sudo dd if=/dev/disk4 of=/dev/null bs=4096
dd: /dev/disk4: Operation timed out
528748+0 records in
528748+0 records out
2165751808 bytes transferred in 346.147647 secs (6256728 bytes/sec)
$ sudo dd if=/dev/disk5 of=/dev/null bs=4096
7791744+0 records in
7791744+0 records out
31914983424 bytes transferred in 1145.467265 secs (27861978 bytes/sec)

Another "fun" fact: my HomePod mini is not recognised when plugged into any of the two ports Thunderbolt/USB ports on the left side. It doesn't turn on and doesn't show under System Report. It does turn on and shows when plugged into the port on the right side. The left ports do recognise my iPad Air 4 and iPhone 12.

Yes, I am having the same issue. Tried many cards of various sizes (32GB to 256GB), brands (Sony, Sandisk, Samsung) and types (UHS-I, UHS-II, Micro-SD), and most hang or are extremely slow, especially on read. A few cards work flawlessly. There does not appear to any pattern of card type, brand or size, and reformatting or rebooting makes no difference.

All the cards work fine via a dongle to a USB-C port.

Bought two brand new microSD cards (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0735NNFLQ?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details) just to see if those would work and both work, but are certainly a little slow to be recognized (around 10s). At least they're not straight up throwing an error. (I didn't test transfer speeds as that's less of a concern for me than just not having to dig out a card reader)

It recognized both straight out of the package and after being formatted by my camera. FWIW both the new cards that seem 'fine' are the same type as one I already own that's been pretty flakey.

Not exactly a scientific test but another data point.

As insane as it sounds, I also tried cleaning the contacts on my older cards with some rubbing alcohol, thinking that maybe the macbook's card reader is just really finicky. Shockingly, did not appear to make any difference.

Here's where I'm at with all my cards...

Brand New 64GB SDXC (Class 10) Sandisk Formatted ExFAT > Works every time
Brand New 64GB SDXC (Class 10) Sandisk Formatted ExFAT > Works every time
Old SDHC 8GB (Class 6) Netac Formatted MS-DOS (FAT32) > Works every time
Old SDXC 64GB (Class 10) Sandisk Formatted ExFAT > Works every time
Old SDXC 64GB (Class 10) Sandisk Formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) > Flakey (recognized about half the time?)
Old SDHC 32GB (Class 10) Sandisk Formatted MS-DOS (FAT32) > Never works, throws error (only works in external card reader)
Old SDHC 32GB (Class 10) Sandisk Formatted MS-DOS (FAT32) > Doesn’t even throw an error. Eventually becomes visible in Disk Utility with limited info, but not in finder (only works in external card reader)

No issues reading the SD card I tried, but I did also notice that it's extremely slow when transferring a small handful of photos to Lightroom. I hope it's just a software thing

I think you should be concerned. I have tried about 10 cards, and all of them are recognized.
However, some transfer at full speed, some transfer slow or hang for long periods (like 5 minutes!), and some just throw up an error after transferring a few photos. I cannot figure out any pattern between SDHC, SDXC ,UHS-II, size, brand, age, format (I even tried formatting HFS+).
I suggest run the blackmagic disk speed test on them (Set the target drive, and use 1GB option). Quick, easy, and impartial.

On my 16" M1 Max, I've noticed the cards take a bit longer to show up on the desktop compared to my 2017 iMac. Not a huge deal but obviously not what I expected either. The cards I'm using (Sandisk Extreme Pro 64GB SDXC UHS-I 170MB/s Class U3) otherwise work fine.
