Just got my 17" MBP. No whine for those who are curious. Doing a fresh OS install now. BEAUTIFUL machine!!! Seems lighter than the 17" PB. Will post conclusions as the day progresses. I'll try to get pics too.

Same here. No whine either. Going to do a hardware test and a fresh install. I opened up a thread in the 'macintosh computer' forum. Mind if I use this thread to post my impressions too? Makes it simpler than having multiple ones across the boards ...

Yes, it is BEAUTIFUL :)

Can I ask guys - why the fresh installs? Surely they are fresh if they are on the machine when it comes brand new?

Because the only language I speak is English and I don't need Office test drive and I also only use one printer, so I don't need ALL the drivers.. I save about 10 GB by doing a fresh install.

Damn! Mine is still a day away! I just left Anchorage last night. One more day to SoCali then a day for delivery. :(

Hope it works right. Mine has been declared DOA after 5 minutes of use. I'm frigging depresssed at this point. 15" ii DOA, got a 17", this one is DOA too.

FWIW, there is NO whine, it's on my lap and it is much much cooler than MBP15.

Yeah tell more on that. I can' believe the luck of people when they get several lemons in a row.

BTW the rest of you - you must post pictures!

Yup, you read it right. My 17" has been declared DOA after 10 mins of use.

Can you read the other thread please. I don't want to retype the same info.

I'm starting to reconsider plowing copious amounts of cash into future Macs.

This is shocking.

I can't imagine how disheartening it is to fork out all that cash and get a bad one.

MovieCutter - Hope yours is a good'un. Keep us posted buddy.

Rich.

hey i know the DOA's and lemons well.

1 PB 15" 1.5ghz G4 DOA
then next one was declared a lemon after 4 months. Replaced with a third pb 1.5 which just this friday was declared a lemon after 5 repairs. Now they are giving me a 1.83 macbook pro...hope this one isnt a lemon/doa too!

Nice upgrade, I've gone through 4 laptops in 1.5 years, but that's just me upgrading.

Update:

Well, I've been running the install for about an hour, definitely less heat the the 15" MBP so far...still no wine or other issues. Running smooth...

I'm scared to open the box once I do get mine.

I suppose that's the only way for me to be completely happy about it's quality.. If I never open it, I can't be upset by a dead notebook.

I concur on the heat and whine. Or the lack of it, to be precise. Way, WAY less heat than the MBP15. It's been on my lap for an hour straight and it's actually almost cool to the touch

Also there is no reason not to open it because Apple will still replace it if your 17" is DOA.

May I ask that you install the Otto Matic demo game and play it for a few minutes and then report how hot the machine is?

When I played that game on my 15" MBP, the machine was impossible to hold after 10 minutes!

Here's a link to download the demo:

http://www.macgamefiles.com/download.php?item=16999&title=Otto+Matic+Demo+(OS+X+Users)

Thanks!

Oded S.

Just played it for 15 minutes or so. PLAYS BEAUTIFULLY!!!! The screen is SO GORGEOUS. I can't wait to run Battle for Middle Earth off of boot camp on this puppy. It got warm/hot, but not like 15" MBP. The space above the keyboard is hot, but NO FAN has come on yet!!! I'll update with more reports

Moviecutter, would a bad video card make the screen appear less bright/clear? When it's not flickering to yellow and 'normal' it just doesn't seem as gorgeous as the MBP15 I returned ...

Not sure about the video card, but it sounds like it would cause a flicker issue. I'll agree though that it doesn't SEEM as bright as my 15" MBP, but it sure is bright. I'm going home for lunch and I'll try to take pics and do a side-by-side comparison of the two. But so far, this battery WON'T DIE. I've booted fully once, done a full reinstall (about 1 hour), ran a game juice the processor, screen, and graphics for about another 30 minutes, let it sit idle here and there with screen at full blast for the last 2 hours or so...and I still have 45 minutes left...
