Not sure about the video card, but it sounds like it would cause a flicker issue. I'll agree though that it doesn't SEEM as bright as my 15" MBP, but it sure is bright. I'm going home for lunch and I'll try to take pics and do a side-by-side comparison of the two. But so far, this battery WON'T DIE. I've booted fully once, done a full reinstall (about 1 hour), ran a game juice the processor, screen, and graphics for about another 30 minutes, let it sit idle here and there with screen at full blast for the last 2 hours or so...and I still have 45 minutes left...

dang, that's pretty good. can't wait for the pics :)

I don't want people reading this thread to get th wrong impression. The machine is FANTASTIC. I'm still using it, flicker or not and I know that is an easy fix. Everything else is incredible. I had the MBP15 and can tell you that the heat difference is HUGE. It is running cool believe it or not. Same thing with the battery. It doesn't drop as fast as the MBP15. Whine, there is NO whine. I had a MBP15 and know what the whine sounds like, this machine doesn't have it. I tried it with the magsafe plugged in, plugged out. Ran photobooth and nope .. no whine.

Finally, the fans haven't kicked in once yet. Which seems to imply they did do something different here, right? As compared to the MBP 15 I mean. I hope it's an easy fix so the hot 15" out there can get fixed ...

I'm curious as to what the computer says the battery life is when you unplug it (although I assume you haven't yet had time to calibrate it).

3:46 steady at full brightness, airport, bluetooth on. 3 browser windows, one word, one excel and one MSN.

ok, I have a question (sorry for your troubles, good luck) I have seen the photos online, and was wondering if the framing around the screen was much bigger my 12 inch pb than the mbps. (I'm talking about the left and right sides, not the top due to the camera...)

ALSO, I read online that the sound is 2X as good, care to elaborate? Here's wishing for the best. :)

shipping dates?

ok.... so the 17"ers are rolling out. i am going to assume that the ones that are hitting are the standard configs. right? i ordered BTO with 7,200 drive on 4/25 and my ship date is all the way out till may 30th. anyone in the same boat?

thanks for replys.

Mine's BTO with the 7200 RPM drive, ordered on 5/1 and it just shipped this morning. I can't really fathom why your order is scheduled so late. Where did you order from (that is, where is your location)?

Interesting... so, question.

I can get to an apple story (1.5 hours away) but if I get there, can I buy a 17 inch, order the extra ram, and hard drive there in the store? maybe get it same day? That would be ideal, then I could bring it back if there was a problem, then open it there to make sure its exactly what I want. no dealing with apple support lines and .com.

your thoughts?

btw, I'm jealous of everyone with a 17 inch mbp!

Did the 17" machines ship with 10.4.6 or 10.4.5 like the 15" MBP's?

Just to clarify, I mean it was shipped out this morning... estimated arrival is said to be the 11th.

Peyton, your query is somewhat confusing. You mean you want to place your order for a BTO machine in-store? Because, to my knowledge (and this will be my first Mac), you can only do BTO via Apple's online store. You can't just have them put more RAM or a new HD in-store. Sorry.

Thanks, I know you can buy more ram and have them install it, I didn't know about the hard drive tho.

sorry to be confusing...

Strange... I ordered mine on the Web site on 5/3 and have an estimated shipment/delivery date of 5/12 and 19.

Like yours, its a BTO with a 7200 RPM drive.

Its an educational order so maybe that makes a difference?

Just got my 17" MBP. No whine for those who are curious. Doing a fresh OS install now. BEAUTIFUL machine!!! Seems lighter than the 17" PB. Will post conclusions as the day progresses. I'll try to get pics too.

Install 10.4.6 on it, and tell me if it whines or not.

I did forget to note that I ordered under Educational, as well. I had never considered they would prioritize such an order.

Educational order notwithstanding, overheated might want to give Apple a call and see if they can provide an explanation.

eV says that the 17" ships with 10.4.6 pre-installed. I wonder if all machines are now shipping with the latest build.

No, if the Apple Store has floor stock (not likely as yet) you would only be able to walk away with one if you buy the stock model (they can do the RAM installation on site in a matter of minutes but definitely not the HDD). Ordering a different HDD will mean waiting for your machine to be taken off the line in China, the different HDD fitted and then shipped.

I've heard of stores offering "ultimate" machines with better-than-stock configs at the appropriate pricing but I don't know if they all do it.

My local AppleCentre had a variety of G4 Mac mini configurations but now they don't ever have any floor stock and we have to wait for our machines - dem's de breaks I guess living on the other side of the planet to the "big markets" (even though we're much closer to the manufacturer....)
