I don't use Aperture. I am tempted by the high-def screen as I can see its benefit when doing web development/general multitasking stuff but I don't do any real heavy video/graphics work, nor will I use it for HD video viewing as I'll use my HD TV for that. It does look amazing but I couldn't help but think everything looked a little 'lost' on such a huge resolution!

Was very impressed by the 15" LED display so was about to pick one up this evening when I realised I'd be better off buying it down the road at John Lewis instead of the Apple Store as they give a 2-year warranty as standard.

So you guys still have a day or two to change my mind back :D

Oh, you'll change your mind again in the next few days. And again. And again. I've changed my mind at least three times today

Here is an awsome review about the 17" HD MacBook Pro.

Trust me, I have already!

I really was gonna go for the 17" HD but the 15" LED display is lovely. I'm also thinking it's just that bit more portable and more comfortable to use lounging on the sofa rather than being stuck behind an enormous screen that's probably overkill for my needs.

I don't need this notebook for "work" - it'll be mostly email, web, iTunes etc. I am doing some web development at the moment, some light Photoshopping, a little Flash video etc so the higher res is useful for that but once this website is finished I'll be back to "normal" home use again.

hmmm...

Sounds like you need the 15". The 17" would be overkill for that...plus all the $$you'll save.

The hinges on the 17" (as opposed to my 'old' 15" Core Duo) aren't nearly as firm. With the old machine I could pick it up by the base and move it in any direction at any speed without the screen moving. On the 17" if I just gently tilt it forward the screen falls, not closing completely but falling to about a 45 degree angle.

Is this just a consequence of the larger/heavier screen on the 17", or do you think the hinges need adjustment?

This is the same on every 17" PowerBook/MacBook Pro I've ever been in contact with. (about 3 different models so far).

I suspect the same hinge is used on the 15" as the 17", thus the heaver 17" screen flops around more easily. Can anyone confirm? The 15" has always felt quite firm in comparison.

Personally I wish the 17" hinge was firmer and it could fold back further.

I don't think you can adjust the hinge, but please let me know if you can.

I love it!

The high-res option is amazing! Fonts are an eyetest in Tiger, but for Photoshop there is nothing that compares. No bad pixels either.

I ordered mine the Saturday of announcement week, and it arrived in six days, direct from Shanghai. This one had the 7200-speed disk also.

Congrats. :) Could you post some pictures of the 17" HD MacBook Pro running Photoshop?

The extra pixels on the 17 HD are awesome. I was worried about the small size since my eyes are just OK, not good, not bad. But having the extra real estate is fantastic.

Only bad news is, like all Apple pro laptops right now, the backlighting is disgracefully uneven.

Not all. The 15" LED-backlits are rather good in this respect, if nothing else. The viewing angle could be better, mind.

I spoke with the staff at Regent St. There is no timeframe even rumoured for LED backlights to be introduced in the 17" range. The only thing is to keep an eye on what Sony and Samsung are doing in their larger laptops and factor in a couple of extra months or so.

Here's a screenshot of Aperture's work area. Still waiting on CS3.

And a not-so-great photo but you get the idea:

Nice pictures, but let me give you a tip.
Try to hold the camera with no movement when shooting. If you can't do, just put in on top of some books in front of the mbp.
Remove the flash, than take a picture. If there's not enough light in the room, switch to manual and set it to 5 seconds or so.

Like that, we will definitely see how the screen looks like.

Right now, it looks very bad on top corners. Is that so uneven back lighted?

I just ordered my 17" High Res. Right now I have a ThinkPad T43p that has a 1600x1200 panel on 15 inches. I love the crap out of it. It's so friggen nice. I have been waiting for so long for someone else to do it. How nice of Apple :)

The hi-res screen is definitely worth the money. Mind you i'm young so I can see all the small fonts and such with ease...but the extra real estate is amazing. I have a 19" on my G5 and now whenever I use that computer everything looks large and clunky. Nothing beats the sharpness of everything on this screen...

After returning 2 of the new standard res 17" MBP's due to incredibly bad backlighting, I finally received the high res version today. The screen is not perfect by any means, but it is much better than the other two I had.

I still have a faint black shadow running about an eighth of an inch from the bottom all the way across the screen. Other than that, I am satisfied enough that I will keep it. Text and images are very clear and crisp.

Posting from mine right now - just cracked it open a few hours ago and this thing is unbelievable. I am in complete awe. It is so insanely bright and gorgeous.

Picked up mine yesterday. This machine is SO nice :D. I haven't really seen any dead pixels. There are *minimal* backlight bleeding(I didn't notice until a couple og hours after opening it). I have a mobile phone picture here: http://www.23hq.com/PimpDaddy/photo/2081293

But I will upload some better pictures later :)

Sadly, that black shadow is now "within spec" for Apple. (In addition to other backlight bleeding and other issues.

It's been some dark days for Apple displays in the past couple of years. Hopefully Apple will return to quality with the move to LED. (But with the yellow hue screens, I am not so optimistic.

Such a bummer...

TNT delivered mine today - I used the migration assistent to get everthing over from my iMac G5.

In short: the display is awesome! :D :p As well as the whole computer.

My iMac - yesterday I loved the machine and today it already looks outdated. Everything is soo big there. The display was 1000% the right choice.

Ahh - yes I got the Hi-def. BTW - I currently have the brightness set to 45%. Thats right. Ok - I currently sit in a dark room. I love love the keyboard lightning - that is sooo sweet.

My only complaints:
the machine gets damn hot. My wife thinks they shipped me a prototype. The small area between the display and the screen gets soo hot that you can definitely burn your hand and the second is that I the when I rest my arms on the edge of the machine it feels a little unconforable.

I saw that black shadow. I noticed it on the display at the store too, but the one at the store isn't as bad as mine. Either way, the black shadow line is definitely not as distracting as the problems I had with the 15" LED display. This display backlight is not perfect but its not yellow either. So far I do love the 17" HiRes display.

Just got mine yesterday and it is indeed amazing. No dead pixels or display issues. Watched it from across the room turning the lights on and off, with the keyboard lighting. Build quality seems excellent with the metal case. I think I am in love....

I have that line as well.

I've had 3 of them now (long story) - 2 matte and 1 glossy - and they all have that line. The screen is brilliant though otherwise, so I'm willing to overlook it. :D

I've got mine now. 17" high-resolution display, 2GB RAM, 160GB 7200rpm hard drive.
So far, so good. Very nice screen. No dead pixels that I can find (and I definitely looked for them). Very evenly backlit, no light or dark patches I can discern.
can u post a screen catch plz of your new HDef MBPro?

Had mine for 5 days now and it's absolutley fantastic! Exchaged a yellow-bar afflicted 2.2Ghz 15" for this 17" HD model and the extra cash is definately worth it. Just fiished installing Vista (after a call to Microsoft explaining that no, this version of Vista isn't on any other machine as the machine it WAS installed on had to be retured as defective. I REALY hate software activation) and that really does look stuning (my own personal opinion is that Vista at anything less than the standard 17" resolution is a total waste). No problem with the font size whatsoever which surprised me as my eyesight isn't the best. It's comfortable to use on the lap and the extra real estate in OSX is DEFINATELY worth the extra £60.

Oh, in case anyone's interested, this machine just returned 3,700 in 3DMark06 at default settings. That compares to 2,800 for the 2.2Ghz 15" model I ended up returning. The Windows Experience score thingy went up as well, with the disk score jumpng from 4.1 to 5.2 thaks to the 7,200rpm drive. In fact my lowest score was from memory transfer rates but even that was a 4.8, everything else 5.0 or higher.

Roll on Leopard!

Friend at work has one

One of my admin buds at work bought the 19x12 MBP from the Apple Store. It is pretty darned nice. Text is on the small side. He had to adjust the terminal font to make it easily readable. The display had a little bit of uneven brightness in the corners, otherwise it was nicer than the 19x12 Dell 1705 and XPS1710s others at work have.
