I have an idea.....get it!

Matte ROCKS!
Glossy is good for looking at chin stubble in your computer screen.
Actually the glossy looks very nice in the dark, but I am the type of person that can't ignore reflections and yes there are reflections in glossy.

i won't ever buy another laptop that does not have an LED backlit screen ever again. i LOVE my new 15" LED backlit display. freakin pwnz all other displays!

I agree with macjonny. Once I see a reflection, it's all I can focus on. And in response to the above poster on the LED screens, they may be a tad brighter but they just don't have the detail of the HD screen on the 17". I watched the same 1080p Fantastic Four trailer on both machines and the 17" won hands down. The black levels were phenomenal!

I say get the matte!

Does anyone think this new 17" high-res display will be less susceptible to fading over time than previous generations?

I just read this review over at Macintouch and they claim the displays fade about 50% each year...sounds awful painful to watch happen given how gorgeous the HD screen looks when brand new.

exactly why i will never buy another tube lighted laptop ever again.

LED FTW!

sorry, but i would take an LED backlit display over a tube lighted HD display any day of the week. i can't wait for the new LED HD displays to come out. i'll be on it like white on rice.

I personally think thats a load of bull. I've had laptops/lcds for years and they are fine as far as their brightness. According to that, they would be 1/16 as bright after 4 years. Hmmmmm.....its a wonder I can even type this now on a 5 year old laptop! All of the LCD TVs now are CCFL as well....guess we better throw those away after a few years cuz we wont be able to see anything!

QFT!

Posting from one now at the Regent Street Apple Store.

Why is it that I called the Apple Store Regent Street several times last week to ask if they had them in (17" matte hi-res) and again yesterday and they told me they didn't have any in stock apart from the 17" glossy normal-res? I asked if they had one on display and they said no. WTF?

Guess I'm just gonna have to ignore them and go there

This Dell CRT are probably 6-7 years old now, I guess that gives me.. 50, 25, 12.5, 6.215, 3, 1.5, 0.8% of the original brightness! To good I can still see the text :)

tekmoe - any particular experience(s) that have turned you off to the tube lighted displays so much? Lots of other people seem to be refuting the whole display degradation thing...just curious if you have some personal experience to share to the contrary?

At the Apple Store Regent St right now and cannot decide between the 17" high-res or the 15".

Was going to go for the 17" but actually the fonts look tiny. The brightness of the 15" LED screen is now tempting me. I just can't quite decide though!

Get the 17"! Try opening Aperture...look at how much extra real estate you'll have. Resolution independence in Leopard will fix any issues you have with the text, and you can already increase the text size in Safari or Word or whatever app you want to use in the meantime...

I don't use Aperture. I am tempted by the high-def screen as I can see its benefit when doing web development/general multitasking stuff but I don't do any real heavy video/graphics work, nor will I use it for HD video viewing as I'll use my HD TV for that. It does look amazing but I couldn't help but think everything looked a little 'lost' on such a huge resolution!

Was very impressed by the 15" LED display so was about to pick one up this evening when I realised I'd be better off buying it down the road at John Lewis instead of the Apple Store as they give a 2-year warranty as standard.

So you guys still have a day or two to change my mind back :D
