They would be shooting themselves in the foot if it is a security issue. Don't forget they have invested money into the apps. Mark is there in the background if they need anything. Plus, it is a supported app unlike 1P7.
Their website is outdated. It has false information. The links from the Mac App Store to the data policy and so on are also outdated and wrong.

Everything is referring to Phoebe Code Limited and last updated in 2023 or 2024.

So definitely something wrong over there.

They don't need to confirm that. The 1Password application doesn't require access to their servers to function.

How does it know you have active subscription if it doesn't contact their server ?

I'd be interested to know whether any product someone is migrating to actually depends on a connection to the 1Password servers to import the data. I would think the 1Password servers would detect the connection from unauthorized software and prevent access.

Migration of password managers is usually by exporting from one app then importing to the other app. Thank god almost all have export options unlike OneNote and AppleNotes.

Is there anyone on this thread not storing their vaults offsite? One could make a case that the odds are very low that you won't have your phone with you if you're house goes up in a fire. That reasoning would scare me since so much of my life depends on all the credentials I have.

If you use Enpass you can store on cloud storage of your choice but idk if you can store on any cloud/Nas storage or just the popular ones.

It's everyone's right to be paranoid when it comes to things like that. But it is also those same reasons why I wouldn't trust data that sensitive to be stored outside my control. That's why the biggest feature I would require is the ability to have local vaults and sync between those vaults locally (over WiFi, ethernet, etc.) That said, if there is something in the code phoning home and sending personal data to them, then that is a major problem, but I don't see anything in the documentation or in the application that is doing that.

That said, the paranoia is justifiable.

BL.

The question is HOW would you know if they are doing something funny on the backend? I do not know if Apple's privacy ratings are tested or just "take my word for it" kind of thing (below Enpass)

I use a different master password (long, complex and totally different makeup) for each account. I keep them distinctly separate and I keep all work passwords in the work vault.

Until the end of last year, we didn't have a password vault at work, I managed to get them to go with 1Password, after testing a few others, including BitWarden, which was a very close run second, but the pilot group all found 1Password easier to use (2 of the 5 had BitWarden at home and they said that 1Password was more user friendly). Before we got 1Password, I used my private account for work passwords. Afterwards, I simply went through my personal vaults and moved all the work related ones to my work vault (click on entry, click move, select destination vault, done).

One of the reasons I tend to only work with one active is adding new passwords, if you aren't paying attention, you can add them to the wrong vault. Moving them after the fact is easy, but it is better to get them in the right vault to start with.

1password is indeed more friendlier and pleasant. Bitwarden looks like Corporate SaaS that needs an IT employee to manage it, then again, its FOSS and free for personal use :p

Any one gave mSecure a test? seems pretty popular with 5 star reviews but I hardly heard of any one using it IRL , not even in this whole thread

almost all have export options unlike OneNote and AppleNotes.

Just discovered yesterday that Apple Notes has quietly added bulk export as Markdown at least from iPadOS 26 (I think macOS 26 does too, but I only have a Mac which can only updated to macOS 14.

In order to bulk export, you will have to pull the menu bar out on iPad and choose to export as Markdown.

Before that it is possible to have a backup through drag and drop multiple files to Files app but the format is rtfd which is useless and iOS/iPadOS only; or request a copy online but Mac only and plain text (with attachments) which erases all the formats.

free for personal use

Bitwarden is not free for personal use. They have a limited version that's free. Obviously they hope people actually pay for one of the full-featured personal versions; they count on the subscriptions for their survival.

How does it know you have active subscription if it doesn't contact their server ?

I don't know if it cares. Maybe the app remembers your subscription expiration from the last time it connected and can work without a connection until that time. I have no idea.

Are they? I hope not! I have them and so does my Dad. Both lifetime license.

For now you dont seem to have to worry about it because i think they honor the lifetime license, but no new comers from what i understand. I am on license and got the most recent update

Enpass still offers a lifetime premium option ($59.00)

If that is the case, then this option is well hidden on their website.

Do they?
if so i can't find it, and if they hide it , its dark pattern behavior (exactly how 1pw did it)
