I have to open the app. OTP Auth offers a Mac, iOS and watch app. I either take a quick look at my watch if my phone is not handy to see the code, or one click copy from the Mac. Same goes for the phone. It is very quick.

Sounds nice! I am generally all for the best balance of security and convenience. I should give this a try. Currently all my TOTPs are in 1Password/ Enpass. Having TOTPs separate is obviously the best choice for a consumer. Will try this and see how I feel about it.

I will check out OTP Auth because what I don't like about my situation is no Mac App for me.
It has been a solid app for me. I like it much better than Authy etc.

Edited to add: I have my codes stored in iCloud, which is encrypted with a password. That way, I have easy access and sync to all my devices. The app also supports other cloud or local sync solutions.

Well, I guess I should confess my sins..... It is the appropriate day...

After buying OTP Auth on Mac and iPhone (I love supporting apps that don't have subscriptions, in my defense).

I figured, why don't I try out Apple's 2FA? Just to see how it works?

So I added Amazon to keychain's 2FA and ... oh my gosh... automatic 2FA filling out in Safari. .........

I'm getting old and lazy so I added all my 2FAS Auth codes to Apple's Keychain and am pretty happy with myself. I supported a developer and my life is going to get easier, <cough>.

Happy Sunday all :p

No harm in rooting for some convenience!

This post has been reported for further review and possible MR sanction. :p

I to use OTP Auth, I liked the privacy policy, it is by a developer from Germany and the functionality is fine.

As I believe in backups I also have all of my OTPs in a KeePassXC database, that ai use only for this purpose. I will try out keychain, never thougt about that option.

I haven't gone through all the messages here. Is there one that supports filling of 2FA fields like 1Password? Once care about Apple operating systems.

Yes, that's a pretty common feature. Bitwarden does make TOTP codes part of the premium plan ($10 a year).

That was a great addition to iOS 15!

The Decision Has Been Made: Codebook. ?‍?????
Bye Bye 1Password.
  • Reasonably Priced.
  • No Subscription- take that Agilebits!
  • No Browser Extension-= because it uses Autofill
  • Private vault storage or WiFi for synch- take that Agilebits!!
  • Touch ID/Face ID.
  • Mac/iOS/PC
  • It works well and reliably pulls up existing passwords held in Codebook.
  • It’s Secret Agent feature works splendidly. If you have a sign-in that does not recognize the current web page, while on that page, a keystroke combo will engage secret agent to locate likely associated entries, and when you select one, it auto fills the requested info, email, user name, password entries, etc. Unlike some other password managers, it does not insist on loading the page the program has linked it too.
  • However Note: For auto fill you need at least MacOS 11. For earlier use Secret Agent.
  • Functionality with Chrome or Firefox On MacOS: Apple does not support autofill on other browsers. Secret Agent fills this gap. I just tested Codebook with Chrome on my MBP, went to Epic Games, initially no autofill, then I hit my 2key combo to turn on Secret Agent (a Codebook feature), a small search window pops up, I typed in ”Epi“ and my Codebook Epic Games login pops up, I hit a button to apply it into the page‘s login slot. Not as good as automatically popping up, but I primarily use Safari and for other browsers, I find this to be an acceptable compromise.
  • iOS- Codebook is recognized as a password source just like keychain, so zero issues there.

Are you absolutely sure of this decision? ;)

As Apple doesn't support Autofill on any other browser than Safari this won't work without Plugin.
Is there a plug-in? I’m hoping it’s Secret Agent feature will fill in this gap. They have a version that works on Windows. I’ll report back as far as alien browsers on MacOS.

I dunno. I just wondered the same thing with Strongbox and the dev gave a nice answer on reddit. But don't be too tied up because of this. I think Apple will deliver this feature sooner or later. It is already there on iOS.

Codebook is great on the Apple ecosystem, but I am still a little stuck up with what to do in the Android world that can work smoothly.

Ideally, it would be one app that is cross-platform and another for TOTPs. I like Codebook, but wondering what to do about Android.

This is where the Keepass ecosystem stands out. You have different clients on any platform. This may be inconvenient in some way because they look and work different but on the other hand you have people who concentrate on one platform and that it does its best there.
I've found true crossplatform apps sometimes lacking one way or the other.

They offer a 2 week trial to test it out.

On iOS, when there is a login window, and you see a little password key icon, you can click on that and the choices are keychain, or Codebook, and it used to be 1PW before I dumped it. Since this product is sold for both Android and PC, I'll assume for Android, you'd see the same kind of a key option to pick codebook entries, but I can't guarantee that without asking Zetetic Support. For browsers on Windows, I assume you are using Secret Agent for Codebook (Windows version) to pull up Codebook entries, but I don't know that for sure either.
I am considering purchasing Codebook for my PC, because doing passwords there is annoying jut like on the Mac if you are not using something.

Regarding Key Chain, I assume this function on MacOS, is browser specific. If you use Safari, it's keychain. If you use Firefox it is some equivalent to keychain, and there is zero cross connectivity. This is why I don't consider keychain as good as a dedicated cross platform password manager.

Correct me on this (it's been a blur between when I last looked at this, new Macs, CSAM, iOS 15, etc.), but isn't the MacOS version a universal binary so it would work regardless of Silicon or Intel?

BL.

I am trying to get started with TOTP in Codebook first. I see that TOTP is not getting copied at all, and if it does, the generation key gets copied instead of the 6 digits!

Would you try this on Amazon?

My steps:
First tap on Touch ID to enter username
Second tap on Touch ID to enter password
Then Command + V to paste TOTP but nothing is getting pasted.

"Codebook allows you to sync your passwords across multiple devices using Google Drive, Dropbox, or local WiFi."

As an owner of Apple-exclusive devices, I'd much prefer the data to be stored and synced in Keychain, like 1Password's keychain vault.

If only Apple would make something free and simple like 1Password to front its keychain...

If you are referencing 2FA mostly I don’t use it, nor am an expert regarding it, but the sites that I do have it, a new window pops up and requests the code which in the past I get from Google authenticator on my phone and I type it in.

Now this was before I was using Codebook. When setting up Codebook to keep a vault on Dropbox, I do have 2FA there, and as Codebook contacted Dropbox, a window popped open requesting 2FA which I pulled off my phone.

And since using Codebook I have not specifically gone to a site I have 2FA setup, but I would just assume I’d pull that off my phone as usual.

Now if 2FA is supposed to be built into Codebook as in self contained, would that somewhat defeat the purpose if someone got hold of your laptop? The phone as a seperate device would defeat anyone who had your computer.

As an experiment I’ll log into my bank that has 2FA and see what happens with Codebook.

Does keychain cover you across browsers or are you stuck with Safari?

Keychain = Safari.
I just logged into DropBox.com, the sign-in appeared, I touched the key icon, the choice was iCloud Keychain or Codebook. I chose Codebook, the Codebook Drop Box sign-in appeared, I selected that and was logged in to a window asking for my authentication code, which I pulled off my Google authenticator on my phone.

So regarding Codebook is this a feature that is supposed to be integrated with it? A quick search did not reveal the answer.

So ..... Codebook just crashed itself and took Safari along with during an autofill instance. Awkward.
