Just wait a few months... Till now all those 1 man show devs just picked up the crumbs 1Password was leaving them.
Now Agilebits has set a course they won't change for a while and I think competitors have a real chance to get a piece of the cake if they just do the exact opposite.
Like native app, local vault,...

EnPass already did they have local vault, and local wifi sync , and license not subscription

Enpass does not have an Apple Silicon native app yet even after a whole year.

I am back to 1Password on the Mac since my sub is valid for a few more months. The iPhone and Android are using Enpass.

What are my options now?

Strongbox on Mac and iOS with something else for Android? I would rather not use Electron apps and any that require Rosetta today after a year of M1 chips being out. That's kinda plain shoddiness.

My 1Password expires next month early. I’ve not changed my mind now for months - been using keychain on my Apple devices. I moved my secure notes to KeePassXC (and Apple Notes) so I’m not really missing much with 1P gone. What bugs me is that for accounts that need 3 secret questions, I now gotta use a password protected Apple Note since I don’t see an easy way to do that otherwise.

Still using 2FAS Auth - haven’t taken the time to move that to keychain yet. Hey, $70?/year saved. Edit: $60 for family plan (which I have thanks @svenmany ).

Just thought I’d throw in an update.

Take a look at “Cheatsheet Notes” app. It offers a very good watch app that you can lock. It would be an easy way for you to see the 3 question notes etc. I have been using the app for years. Small one time fee.

$70/year seems way off.

If you're just subscribing to 1Password by yourself, then it's $36/year. The family plan which supports 5 users (which I find quite powerful and very useful for my needs) is $60/year.

He has a Family account, and the ? beside the price figure suggests he is speaking off his memory and does not remember accurately. Nothing is way off there. :)

lol - I missed the "?"

I figured I'd do the 2 clicks on the web to relay the correct price. I also didn't realize he was talking about family. He has a much smarter family than I do. I could never have my family deal with a variety of tools to maintain passwords, secret questions, etc.

My bad.

Hah! No worries! Thank you for the correction. And, what made me stop using it was cuz I asked my family if anyone was using it, and they all said no, LOL (After I had given them all invites years and years ago - been using the Family plan for years). So I figured, why pay for something only I’m using.

IMO, 1Password is a great application and $36/year is very acceptable.

I’m on a personal quest to rid myself of as many subscriptions that I can because I was spending hundreds per month on stuff I wasn’t using (yeah it got bad).

Happy Saturday!

Now that I've upgraded to version 8 on Windows, I'm starting to worry that my time with 1Password might come to an end after version 7 stops working.

I think the version 8 desktop app is quite pretty and usable. But, it requires you to upgrade to their new browser extension. I find that extension to be a major downgrade from the older one (the one that requires 1Password desktop app to be installed). The new extension's window is very small, not resizable, and uses a very large font. The in-field usage that the extension provides is jarring and in the way. Also, it has the same size limitations that the toolbar window has. Since the extension gets so much more use than the actual application, I'm much less enamored with 1Password.

An even bigger worry is the loss of local storage. I don't really mean just supporting a local vault. The old 1Password kept daily backups on my local disk. It also supported various file formats to export my vaults. That seems to be gone now. I see there is a new format for export, with files having extension "1pux". Their forums say the ability to import 1pux files has not been implemented yet. So, effectively, there is no way to get a local copy of my passwords.

That was a downside I didn't like either when I was evaluating my options. Besides secret questions I also like to have credit cards, notes, identity numbers, etc all in the same place.

I'm full into the Keepass universe now. Yes, the UI is nowhere near as pretty as 1Password. BUT: On iOS the 1Password app was never that great. Here Strongbox really shines. It looks great, is faster than a lightning and just works.
On MAcOS it's another story. It looks ok, I like the overview and that I can see 20-30 passwords in a row. But it isn't as refined as the iOS version. The dev is very responsive and every small issue I had was fixed after days!!
And there are enough Adroid clients for Keepass. So I don't see a problem there. Just try it!

You could circumvent the issue by making more entries for this site by hand. So when it pops up you just have to fill in the passwords by dropdown.

Will look into Keepass properly now. ?

I evaluated KeePassXC, but the password entries are just not flexible enough. For example I found no good option to have entries with more than one username & password. I use this e.g. for my internal servers, where I have several accounts with different credentials.

I assume, that this is a limitation of the Keepass file format and other Keepass compatible apps have the same limitation. But maybe I will try out Strongbox to.

I loved this app sense I got it years ago too!

Thank the developer once for not going to subscription but he told me he thought about it before.

Version 8beta of 1Password is so ****ed up and it after a few uses it doesn't even open up in Safari. I don't really care about the subscription model or cost, the new version is totally ****ed. Might just have to hang on to version 7 until I'm forced to upgrade at which point I'll jump to an alternate.

I haven't gone through all the messages here. Is there one that supports filling of 2FA fields like 1Password? Once care about Apple operating systems.

With Strongbox, TOTP codes are automatically copied to the clipboard when you use AutoFill (Safari and other apps). All you need to do is paste the code. I prefer to use a separate app for TOTP codes (OTP Auth). That way if something goes wrong with Strongbox etc., I still have access to my codes.

You're killing me. I'm heartbroken by their drop in quality and failing to meet some of my basic functional requirements. I've tried 1Password 8 on Windows, but yet to on Mac. I'm so sorry to hear that it disappoints.

By the way, on the Mac, 1Password 7 often fails to open my default browser, Firefox. For the most part, I can only count on it if I have Firefox already open.

<edit>

I still have my 2007 receipt from my first purchase of 1Password. It's going to feel like a divorce when I move on.

This is actually a sound strategy, coming to think of it. @BigMcGuire uses the same strategy, I believe, since he uses a separate app for TOTP.

How cumbersome is it? Do you have another app open all the time or do you open the app when you want to login?

I have to open the app. OTP Auth offers a Mac, iOS and watch app. I either take a quick look at my watch if my phone is not handy to see the code, or one click copy from the Mac. Same goes for the phone. It is very quick.

From the Mac App Store listing.

Yep, I use https://2fas.com - 2FAS Auth on my iPad and my iPhone.

There is no watch app from what I'm seeing.

What I do like about it is iCloud syncing - I leave it just on my iPad and my iPhone for the pure 2nd device.

It's not as convenient as having 1Password pop in the 2FA code automatically for you, but .... what I do is, most 2FA services allow me to have 2FAS Auth AND SMS 2FA, so when on my Mac I'll default to SMS and when using my mobile devices I'll use 2FAS Auth application to copy/paste the code in.

Open the app when you want to log in, tap the code (it copies it to clipboard) then swipe over to Safari or whatever app and paste the code in.

I will check out OTP Auth because what I don't like about my situation is no Mac App for me.
