Does anyone know if KeePass will work in Chrome like 1Password does ?

Is that even possible ?

Reason I ask is because one of my family members only wants a local password manager.

No. Keepass is neither as convenient to use nor is it similar. You can do the same things, most of them, but it's a very different app. I would just try it.

If it did not automatically recognize the page, it did not insist upon loading in a new page with that it thinks is linked to youT log in.
Neither Stongbox (uses Autofill) nor Safeincloud (cross platform - uses extension) does that..maybe try one of them.

strongbox, safeincloud, and minimalist does this I believe. So does Enpass. If you are looking for open source complete solution I am afraid it doesnt exist, closest thing Bitwarden but passwords saved in the cloud.

Bitwarden offers local hosting as well albeit the user has to set that up manually.

An older articel in the german magazine Ct pointed me to Vaultwarden, an alternative Bitwarden server implementation, which is not as resource heavy as the original one and very easy to setup via Docker: https://github.com/dani-garcia/vaultwarden

I am currently testing it and it looks very promising.

So.....

1Password 8 dropped today, for Windows.. and from the early posts by the journos, this caught my attention.

Apparently the Windows client is written in Rust, not Electron. While that might give some hope for the MacOS client, that still wouldn't resolve the issue of standalone vaults or being forced to move your data into the cloud as well as on their servers if remaining with them.

At this point, I'm still debating on moving away from 1Password 6 now, or start to live on borrowed time and remain on 1Password 6 while Rosetta 2 is still available.

The core of the app is Rust, the UI is Electron. It's the same on the Mac.

Did you install it? What's the RAM usage? If it's about 300 Megabytes instead of the usual 50-70 it is Electron.

Nope. didn't install it. Not putting it on my Windows box, nor am I going to migrate my vaults over to it. I just noticed that the Windows client dropped today, while the MacOS client is still in beta.

Yea. They stated on reddit that the Mac is almost release version, it is just that it's so new that they don't want to hurry stuff but it is in its last state.

afaik they said part of it is in electron and not fully, and they made sure it doesn't be resource hungry and remain fast.

one commenter on the verge:-

" aniforprez : The electron hate is really stupid and it’s so cultish. The app used to take 50 MB. It takes 100 MB when closed and 150 MB when open. The one thing is the installation is now 100MB when it used to be 10. Meanwhile windows explorer with 3 windows open is at 180 MB, FF is at 500+ and don’t even ask about Chrome. The app is now super snappy and has a better universal experience (at the cost of some minor features like typing into windows). When it first came out in EARLYACCESS the amount of hatred was rabid and unnecessary. They’ve done a decent job of making it smooth with this update. I’m looking forward to the Mac app updating as well (even if it doesn’t really need it) "

One commenter, at odds with the facts, on the verge.
Just read the hundreds of Reddit thread postings and the performance comments, mem and cpu utilisation figures. I dont think they are all wrong.
Anyway I still dont want to give all my usernames, passwords etc in fact my entire vault, to the developers server. "Trust us, we will look after it" .... dont think so...just read their own Terms and Conditions. The motto should be "Our profit, your data, your risk, we take no responsibility"

I tried the Mac beta. It was about 300 MB, funny, because Bitwarden is also Electron and uses about 300, Microsoft Teams, also Electron, uses about 500.
The thing is: 99% the password manager is sitting in the background waiting. It's doing nothing. It's listening if there is a PW field on the webpage.
It is ridiculous to give it that much ressources for sitting around. A browser is in use. You don't open it once a day and then minimize it till you go to sleep.
And it adds up. Sure, Firefox is using more. But imagine every app would use that much.

Ah, and the commenter seems to be on Windows. That's why he is happy. Probably he went through all versions of 1Password the last several years. Windows was hell. Everything looks fine against this.

If I would have stranded in a desert I would be happy about toilet water. This doesn’t mean it tasted good. ?

Took a break from this thread because I'm very happy with what I switched to from 1Password.

I don't remember who it was, but someone didn't like Bitwarden because of what they have for their keyboard shortcut for autofill. I just learned that if you're using Firefox or Chrome you can change it.

"Some browsers, including Safari and legacy Edge do not currently support changing the default keyboard shortcuts for extensions."

If you don't like how much memory the Bitwarden client is using you don't have to run it. The browser extension doesn't need the client running in order to operate.

Yea that’s the difference. You just need the browser extension. I like Bitwarden but I liked Strongbox just a little more. :)
Is it possible to use StrongBox with Firefox or Chrome/Brave? I read the autofill was Safari only and stopped there.

Here's 1Password8 Beta on my 2017 iMac with the extension actively running in Safari, Brave and Firefox simultaneously with a 1P window open.

People complain 300MB ram is a lot, sure I would like smaller too but I think its ok in the world of 8GB RAM standard in most computers. Thats like just 4%!? Not that I dont hate AgileBits but being honest.

thats was me. I knew you can change it, but you can't change it to "cmd+\" it has to be "cmd+SHIFT+\" more keyboard gymnastics.

I am happy a FOSS app exist and is successful. If we didn't keep options alive we would not have a place to go to after 1Password forces us to to their terms. Hopefully they release a local vault version in the future (not in their interest since it doesn't make them money) and the app overall gets better and has a more pleasant GUI.

Ok. You're totally right. There is enough. Why not just say it doesn't matter. Let's just say a lot of your Apps use Electron. Like Whatsapp (or Signal) 600 MB, or Signal around 400. You're a gamer, so you may use Discord, 400-500MB. You may code in VS Code, so 300 MB again. You have your browser open, that takes a lot.
This adds up to a crazy amount of RAM used for basic computer apps. They don't do anything special. The Miranda ICQ app was using 5-10MB, TS uses about 100-120MB, and so on. It's not just some MB more. It's 5-10x more. With every single app that uses Electron.
10x is just ridiculous.
But it's not just numbers.
RAM usage means battery usage. Discord makes my battery melt. As does Signal. It builds pressure on the whole system, not just a given number of RAM.
More RAM used means more heat is generated. More memory has to be swapped on the SSD. This means your SSD is used much more and that leads you to earlier SSD failure. It is a chain reaction.

And as I said earlier, I don't mind a game using all my RAM. I don't mind using a editor or a browser all of my RAM. I use them actively. But a password manager is sitting in the background doing absolutely nothing. Just listening.
Is it really worth it? I don't think so.

Just wait a few months... Till now all those 1 man show devs just picked up the crumbs 1Password was leaving them.
Now Agilebits has set a course they won't change for a while and I think competitors have a real chance to get a piece of the cake if they just do the exact opposite.
Like native app, local vault,...

I got the email about 1Password 8. I don't get 1Password's marketing. They are trying to tout their new features when iOS already offers what they are wanting to sell with their sub. I am happy with Strongbox and Bitwarden. If I wasn't, what 1Password is trying to sell me wouldn't entice me at all.
I received an email two days ago, 11/17. The email only mentions 1Password 8 for Windows. Is there an iOS version coming for 1Password 8 that you've been told about in an email? I've never felt their marketing is directed towards iOS-only users.

I'm not saying you should be enticed by 1Password. I'm just trying to understand your iOS comment.

It's supposed to be coming for all platforms; only Windows has had a public release so far. Currently, 1Password for iOS is still in the 7.9.x series.

I see your point if everyone uses electron its bad. but in most cases I think people will just have browser+1pw+ms office so 8GB should be enough.

its the same with all businesses they use the same broad marketing terms "Secure, Safe, Powerful, Innovative" yada yada ... truth is they near all provide exactly a replica of the other.
