Has someone figured out what happens if one just keeps 1PW v.7 on Mac? For me, it is essential iPhone and iPad to have local sync.

But will iOS/iPadOS apps be upgraded to v.8 equivalents, so my Mac can’t sync although 1PW 7 is still on my Mac?

For me, I would be ok paying a modest subscription for 1PW. The problem is eliminating the standalone vault that can be hosted wherever you want and being forced to using 1PW's servers only. Electron aside (which admittedly I don't know much about) that's THE absolute deal-breaker for me that will force a switch to another product/service.

I'm enjoying KeePassXC a lot more than I thought I would - got the database in iCloud, got a key file, and I've been using it for a few weeks now without a problem.

Come to find out, I use Keychain for most everything and 1Password for a few secure notes and 2FA. iOS 15 will allow me to transfer all 2FA to Keychain and I'm good to go. Really no need to pay for 1Password at this point for me.

The decision has to be made though, can I live without my secure notes on my iPad / iPhone?

Not to me, it's not. Perhaps all the sensitive souls need to take a break. The intention of the thread was very clear. How it develops as forum threads do is another matter.

From the comments it seemed like it mattered a lot, so I said. If it is suddenly not so, alright. I don't care either ways.

How exactly are Secure Notes more secure than the password-protected notes in apps such as Notes or Bear? I do not use Secure Notes, so wondering.

Also, I am sure we readily have options to duplicate the functionality you are looking for.

This is something that I realised a few days ago, too.

I can use free Bitwarden and for 2FA I can use Apple Passwords. This is going to be a free solution that will work for me in 99% of the cases. Some times, when using Android, I will not be able to use 2FA unless I pay for Bitwarden Premium.

Still have a few months to go before my subscription ends, so there is time.

I'd feel fine having them in Apple Notes with a secure password. I feel like Apple Notes isn't as easy to back up though but I wouldn't mind using it. I have about 30-40 secure notes that I maintain.

Hah how interesting. I was looking at other options to 1Password but what really attracts me is keeping everything in iCloud.

Been using Diarly 100% over the last few days and really loving it for the reason that my data stays in my iCloud.

Just something I've been enjoying recently, lol.

Happy to know about Diarly staying robust for your multi-gigabyte requirement. :)

Oh yes.. I have no clue about Notes backup. It does not look very easy. You can copy notes in a folder that stays in Notes but does not sync to iCloud.. but I think that is all we can do. We cannot bring that data out of Notes app, I think.

Does KeePassXC not allow a field (even custom field) that you could use? Just title the "password" item as "xxxx Note" for search purposes and start typing in that custom field?

KeePassXC is working for me really well - been using it for a few weeks now - I had to do some work to get it to import 1Password correctly but once it did, minus the UI being not as polished, it's working perfectly for me. :) I'm so happy using it, I'm seriously considering just keeping it for now LOL. Yep.

If you want secure end to end encrypted notes, check out the Joplin app. It is very good.

I wouldn't use Nord for anything, just not trust them.
Any other opinions on Nord? The security seems good, per this PC Mag review:

"With NordPass, your passwords are encrypted on your device locally using xChaCha20, before being sent to NordPass' servers. A company representative noted that "we [NordPass] use Amazon Web Services as our cloud provider with our own Key Management Solution for Hardware Encryption." When you need to access your passwords, the encrypted data syncs back to your device, at which point you need to decrypt it with your master password. As mentioned, NordPass says it employs a zero-knowledge infrastructure, which is to say the company never knows your master password and thus can never decrypt your data. Although this means you have few recovery options, it also means that even a data breach will not risk your information to exposure.

Note that NordPass underwent an audit by Cure53. You can read NordPass's summary of the results on its blog, though note that the full publication is not on Cure53's site. Bitwarden has been audited several times, as well. More password managers should commit to regular audits"

I don't use VPNs very often but I like NordVPN - I use it when I travel and have to use internet in sketchy places. I wasn't happy when they made the news a few years ago (or was it a year ago?) but I use them so infrequently and paid for that 3 year license when it was discounted near Black Friday.

Thanks—but I meant Nord's password offering, NordPass.

Would it be possible for you to spend a little time outlining the issues you faced with it and how you went about resolving them?

Sure can!

I initially just imported the 1Password CSV into KeePassXC and ... it was so messed up that it was unusable. So did a bit of DuckDuckGo searching and found: https://ryannickel.com/html/migrating_from_1password_to_keepassxc.html

"
  1. Open 1Password, log in, and select the vault (if on Mac).
  2. File > Export > All Items. Enter your password.
  3. Change the File Format to CSV. Leave everything else the same and press Save
  4. Open KeePassXC
  5. Select Import from CSV and select the file you exported from 1Password
  6. Create a password to unlock and select OK
  7. In the top section, select Consider ‘\’ an escape character
  8. Set the following columns:
    Group: Not present
    Title: Column 3
    Username: Column 6
    Password: Column 2
    URL: Column 5
    Notes: Column 1
    Last Modified: Not present
    Created: Not present
  9. Press OK
"

Just a note: I found changing some of the column values reset the other values - so double check everything before importing. After that, it imported perfectly and everything is accessible in KeePassXC. Been using it for a few weeks now really happily - so much so, I'm considering just using that and Keychain from now on. (One less subscription, yay!).

(One less subscription, yay!).

And maybe in some more months, we might be able to subtract DayOne from that list of yours too, right? ;) But Diarly was added, so that does not reduce the total count.

Regarding this elaborate process you just posted:

When I tried to export "All Items" in a 1Password vault, it throws an error for me because of attached documents to some passwords, such as screenshots of their backup codes and such. So.. I have to first get into a vault, then select just Logins or Passwords from the left sidebar, and then choose File > Export > Selected for things to work. Documents can not be exported out, they must be opened in Finder and then you can just drag and drop them out. So there is that added thing.

I am stuck in a couple aspects.

Let's say we kick Android out of the mix for now, since that can be handled manually.

In 1Password, I have 3 vaults now, two for family members and one for my own use. That way, the segregation of passwords, documents and login items works well for three of us.

- I could not quite replicate this segregation in Bitwarden.
- I can create vaults in Enpass, but they will need to be synced to separate accounts, I cannot have that hassle.

So.. I am looking for ways to handle this.

Then, most of my passwords now have TOTPs. StrongBox could not import TOTPs at all since they were mostly scanned (otpauth URLs). The few TOTPs where I had manually entered the string, they were imported fine.

In that aspect, Enpass and Bitwarden work flawlessly, both of them imported TOTPs perfectly.

With Bitwarden, I feel it is useless to shift to it in my case, because 1Password is priced at USD 15 in my location whereas Bitwarden is USD 10 and after currency conversion charges, the net difference that Apple charges me and what USD 10 would reflect as in my credit card statement would be roughly USD 2-3. At that price difference, 1Password makes for a much more appealing solution even with version 8.

Net result, I am still wondering how to avoid using 1Password and get out of this subscription.

I need:
- separation of passwords (like vaults)
- flawless import of TOTPs
- in-line or at least easy-to-use password generator and changer (1Password is really good at this)

That's more or less it.

You should be fine. I mean, I'm still on 1Password 6, and the apps on my iPhone and iPad are at the latest, and still work with local sync. In fact, I hadn't expected anything to be a problem until the 1Password 8 fiasco started.

But will iOS/iPadOS apps be upgraded to v.8 equivalents, so my Mac can’t sync although 1PW 7 is still on my Mac?

They should work, at least based on my experience with the above. I'm on 1Password 6.8.9 on my Mac, with 1Password 7.7.7 on my iPhone and iPad.

The opening post in this thread.

Then you should re-read the opening post of this thread.

You can develop it into whatever you want but the intention of the thread was about the cost, nothing more.

wrong. From the OP:

So as you know 1Password is forcing you to the subscription model which is something I refuse to pay for a simple piece of software that is basically a glorified password protected spreadsheet file browser. I am fed up of subscription model and greedy companies that abuses it. I have already paid license which I believe was $60 twice for an upgrade making the total $120.

You are right here when it comes to price. However:

Please share your experiences with trustworthy password managers. I have already tried Bitwarden, its an option but the GUI is ugly that could use real work and the browser plugin is just too much imo. I also didn't had an issue where if you have multiple accounts it will only auto fill the top one meanwhile 1password gives you the option to choose which one to use. Another thing is I want to store my password locally and not in the cloud, not sure why everyone is forcing a cloud account.

I could be wrong but LastPass seems untrust worthy, I heard a lot of shady issues with them.

The OP succinctly includes functionality in the premise of this thread. A refresher is in order on your end, as this thread is not only about price, but functionality as well.
