But he is right. People can order them online and don't need to wait for a freakin phone. They are all idiots who do. I did it once for the iPhone 5 and haven't since.
Idiots is a pretty needless thing to say in any regard.

Waiting was the only option many people had of possibly, no matter how improbable, of getting a launch day phone.

I ordered and was confirmed for a 256 Black ATT 7Plus. I'm currently in preparing to ship status. So...I'm probably not getting a launch day phone.

Many people were online actually trying to preorder while watching shipping times get worse and worse. If they did stay on and order a phone they were more than likely given a week or more delivery date AFTER launch day.

Is it that important to have it on launch day? Will a day, a week, a month really matter that much?

Yeah, mine shows the 23rd of Sept as well and I ordered at 2:01 CST.

Be careful selling on eBay. Buyer can easily claim empty box and eBay buyers protection is extremely hard to fight. So if I were you, I would do a full video of you going to UPS/Fedex/USPS, having the staff box up the iPhone and putting the shipping label on the box with the buyers info. Document all you can cause if you get that "buyer did not receive item as described" from eBay, your screwed.

Well if this makes the OP feel better - local news here in the flagship Palo Alto store:

The good - Tim Cook on hand to take selfies with the first few people in line.
The bad - 1st person wanted a 7+ and there were zero available.

What idiot would pay over $4k for a iphone. More power to the ebay seller, lots of stupid people in the world.

It's fake. People were troll bidding and have zero intention of paying $4k for a ****ing phone that you can get by walking into a store in a few weeks.

Seriously you will be only one of a handful of people that will have a JB phone tomorrow. You can probably name your own price on Ebay for that.
Mine is reserved for pickup this evening. I've considered that. It's kind of a dick thing to do though, but some of those are just richer people who didn't want to get up in the middle of the night to preorder. I just saw a 256GB 7 Plus on ebay for $1350 with 12 bids and 6h left. Some other bids are starting to creep up too.

Anecdotally: went to two carrier stores and two Best Buy locations.

The ONLY plus of any variety I saw was being unboxed to set up as a display model. They had all kinds of the smaller 7 but zero pluses. One of the staff at Best Buy indicated that Apple pretty much reserved the plus for themselves.

Take that for what it's worth.
