Regarding these steps...and before I try it again, I am wondering...Once I install the 10.10.5 update, how do I re-install the PikeYoseFix after that? Doesn't the Mac automatically restart after the OS install? And won't I be left with an unbootable system before I get a chance to redo the Pike file? I ask because I trie this previously with I think 10.10.4, and it never booted, even though I (am pretty sure I) installed the Pike fix.

Dumb question , I'm sure. Just doublechecking before I make the same mistake twice!

If you have already installed the PikeYoseFix then just upgrade to 10.10.5. Step 7 of reinstalling the fix really isn't necessary.

I wouldn't try to reinstall it before the computer reboots to do the update because you might accidentally kill the daemon so the boot.efi would get overwriting by the update.

I did install the boot.efi from my USB startup disk to the two locations but still my system will not boot!

dod I need to do additional things?

thanks,

Hennesie2000,

My innitial installation was doen according to your manaul.
It took me 10 times before I had it working but it did, just perfect.

on my system I have next to the Yosemite boot version and Yosemite working version also 10.6.8.
after the update I started 10.6.8. and used Terminal to copy the boot-efi from the Yosemite boot version to the Yosemite working version.

I believe I never installed the PikeYosefix.

thanks,

So.. after spending weeks reading through all 146 posts on this topic and going to other websites gathering information to upgrade my 2006 mac pro 1,1... I decided to give it a go. I downloaded the pre patched Piker Alpha bootable Yosemite installer, made my usb and installed.

It works! I then installed the Pike Yose script restarted twice, and then ran the latest apple update...

Still working!

I just have one question. I have seen many different posts on other websites about installing the black or grey boot efi. Since i installed from the patched Piker Alpha bootable Yosemite installer, am I correct in assuming that the boot efi was patched into that installer.. I am assuming so since everything is operating smoothly so far.

My next upgrade is to take the original dual core processors out and replace them with a matching pair of Intel Xeon Quad Core X5365 (3.00GHZ/8M133)SLAED processors. Is there any other software/firmware upgrades that need to be made to utilise these processors?

Right have it up and running again.

What did I do.

- I booted in the installation partition.
- Switched to terminal.
- looked for the boot.efi file in /usr/standalone/i386
- copied the boot.efi from this location to the root of the system that recieved the update. in my case "Yosemite SSD"
- chflags nouchg to the root boot.efi file
- copied the root boot.efi to /usr/standalone/i386
- chflags uchg the boot.efi in the /usr/standalone.i386
- copied the root boot.efi to System/Library/CoreServices
- chflags uchg the boot .efi in the System.Library/CoreServices
- quit Terminal
- pointed to the "Yosemite SSD" as startup disk and reboot.

The system re-boots and continues the update process.

and after that it is up and running again.

I was working on this for quite some time and thought I had a possible hardware or EFI issue with my 2006 MP tower (1,1) since I could not boot into the Startup Manger. Couldn't get there even with no external media or DVDs connected, etc.

I have a PC keyboard connected through a KVM. The Alt key on it is the Option key for Mac. I tried with directly connecting another PC keyboard (don't have a Mac one atm),and tried plugging it into different USB ports, but would just get a blank black screen if holding the Alt key after the startip chime.

I had the original graphics card in slot 1 which is dying from a heating issue, and bought a 5770 and put it in slot 2.

Connected to the original card, I had a Dual link DVI connected to my HP 30" and on the 5770, DVI out with HDMI in to a Samsung flatscreen. (DVI to HDMI cable).

I thought I needed a Mac keyboard and was just about to buy one.

Instead, I pulled out an old VGA monitor and a DVI to VGA cable and hooked it up to the original card and also pulled out the 5770.

Then voila! I finally got to see the Startup Manager and my alternate Yosemite installer startup disk. Not sure if pulling the 5770 helped, likely not.

Guess that low level signal is analog and can't be seen over a digital video connection.

Hope this helps someone.

Also hope the rest of my install goes smoother :)

NEED GPU HELP!!

I had Lion on my Mac Pro 1,1 (flashed to a 2,1). I used SFOTT to make a Yosemite key and used it to upgrade to Yosemite. Success. Then I installed PikeYoseFix and restarted twice. Then updated to 10.10.5. Cool. This was all with my stock GeForce 7300 GT.

Problem.

After all of this, I shut down and replace my GPU with a GTX 610 1GB card (worked under Lion perfectly). Start up, and nothing but black screen even after 5 minutes. Nothing.

Next, I shut it down and installed my GTX 750 (the card I WANT to use in in my Mac Pro). Same results.

I then discovered I may need to install the NVIDIA webdriver. Install 7300GT, try to install Webdrivers, My Mac is not supported it says, so I extract with Pacifist, and use KextBeast to install Kext files to extensions folder.

Shut down, replace 7300GT with GTX 750, start up, still nothing but black screen well after OS X should have loaded.

HELP! I am at my wits end. I read everywhere that this is a fairly smooth process, but aside from making the installer key and getting the system installed, everything else is a pain. I have been at this for a week. Please advise!

By just installing the kext files you didn't install the preference pane which when used adds a boot argument (nvda_drv=1) into nvram that tells the system to use the web drivers. I would recommend reinstalling the drivers by using the Flat Package Editor to modify the distribution file. I have a guide here: http://www.tonymacx86.com/graphics/161256-solving-nvidia-driver-install-problems.html.

Just a warning, keep the 7300GT on hand because the GTX 750 will only work in Yosemite or newer. And, you must have the Nvidia web drivers installed and selected to use the GTX 750.

I followed your advice. First, I did a fresh install of 10.10 (Pike) and updated it. Then I tried the solution for Problem 1. Ran the modified pkg, got a JavaScriptError. My java is up to date. So, I moved on to the solution for Problem 2, and downloaded 346.02.03f01 and installed it no problems. Rebooted the Mac. Made sure the Web Driver was selected, then shut it down. I removed my 7300 GT and installed the TX 750. No joy. I then tried the GT 610, nope, did not work.

I really do not know what to do. The 7300 GT obviously does not cut it. Did I miss something?? Please help if you can. I really appreciate it.

Side note: say I decide that Yosemite just isn't right for my Mac Pro 2,1 and I want to go with 10.8 or 10.9. Obviously I cannot use my GTX 750 (if I ever get it working) because it required 10.10, I may sell it. If I do this, I will be stuck using the GT 610 (again, if I can even get this darn thing working). So, if I sell off my 750, what is the BEST graphics card KNOWN to work in the Mac Pro 1,1/2,1? Doesn't have to be Apple certified, just known to work with no issues.

Type this in to terminal and then try the GTX 750 again.

Code:
sudo nvram boot-args=kext-dev-mode=1, nvda_drv=1

Thank you for the working link.

The file that is downloaded from that has a .dmg.zip extension. I assume we are supposed to rename that and just remove the .zip from it, as WinRAR shows it to be a corrupted zip file

Use Google Chrome to download it. You will need to unzip it, not just change the extension.

I just did this. Thank you for the suggestion, but it had no effect :(

Eagerly awaiting any other help/advice/assistance.

edit: after rebooting with my 7300 GT, i went and looked and saw the OS X Default Graphics Driver is checked now. Why would that be?

edit 2: Out of curiosity, I marked it back to NVIDIA Web Driver and rebooted with my GTX 750. Still no display.

Check to make sure the boot argument is still there by typing
Code:
sudo nvram boot-args

It will show you what is saved in nvram. If nvda_drv=1 is saved then whatever it says in system prefs is just cosmetic and doesn't matter.

Also, I realized you need to put quotation marks in the original boot-arg command so it would be
Code:
sudo nvram boot-args="kext-dev-mode=1, nvda_drv=1"

Entered that command, nvda_drv=1 was present. Still no video :(
At this point, I would settle for the GT 610, but that don't work neither. Which leads me to believe it is not a card issue, rather software still.
