Still trying to do a clean install of Yosemite on my MacPro 2 1 but after selecting language type I would get a "Cannot install on this machine" error.

>I have replaced the boot.efi

>added my Mac Pro into "installable machines"

>changed "mpkg"

not sure what's causing the road block.

:(

When adding your board ID to the OSinstall.mpkg. Make sure the quotes around your board ID are not italicized. You might need to copy the quotation marks from another entry.

Dude, you rock. I plan to upgrade my other two towers tonight and your guide will be a lifesaver. Thanks for all your hard work.

One of my systems runs audio via HDMI on the stock 5770 card, have you had any issues with this at all?

I cannot get HDMI audio to work with my GTX570, and I don't have an AMD card to test. Based on the HDMI audio thread on these forums it seems that AMD cards should work but you might need to use kext-dev-mode=1.

Who knows, how to modify the Recovery Partiton under 10.10.
Changing the boot.efi on the partiton doesn't succeed?!

same here, replacing the boot.efi on the Recovery HD did not lead to success.

it might be necessary to also modify the BaseSystem.dmg and PlatformSupport.plist on the Recovery HD.

/Recovery HD/com.apple.recovery.boot/BaseSystem.dmg
/Recovery HD/com.apple.recovery.boot/PlatformSupport.plist

on the BaseSystem.dmg there's a boot.efi in
/usr/standalone/i386/boot.efi

Tried it again but it keeps telling me that Yosemite is already installed on my machine. I'm ready to give up.

Thats odd because I re-installed Yosemite the other day using a boot.efi based installer. I had no problems. You should always be able to install over top of an existing install in case you need to fix any issues. If you haven't I would suggest rebuilding your installer from scratch.

Or better yet, use a Yosemite capable machine, insert OS X Hard Drive into an external enclosure (OR use Target Disk mode on your Mac Pro) and then install onto that Hard Drive, install OS X Yosemite Public Beta 5 or GM3, replace boot.efi inside /usr/standalone/i386 and /System/Library/CoreServices and put that Hard Drive back inside. Oh and don't forget to add your board inside of /System/Library/CoreServices/PlatformSupport.plist.

Worked like a charm for me when I went nuts over "Yosemite is already installed on your Machine".

Not everyone has a Yosemite capable machine.

Alright, I have made progress. Thank you Hennesie2000 you were right about the quotations. I have never paid attention to it but textedit italicized after my inputs. After the changes she installed immediately. I have another Mac but I wanted to do a real install if you know what I mean. Thank you again Hennesie2000.

Yea it's one of those things that shouldn't make a difference but it does.

Please allow me to ask a silly question.

I've made a boot usb disk with updated boot.efi and install on my MacPro 2,1 successfully.

Now, I saw the new boot.efi to fix some issues. How can I update the boot.efi into a already installed Yosemite? It seems direct copy doesn't work.

Thanks.

You're trying to copy the boot.efi over a probably locked boot.efi inside of /System/Library/CoreServices/, correct?

I used Terminal to remove that file and then just moving the updated boot.efi to replace it:

Use command:
sudo rm /System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi

… and just choose yes when asked if you're sure.

Do NOT forget to throw that new boot.efi in there or your Mac will render unbootable! Good luck!

Short answer is yes. You will need to replace both of the boot.efi files located at /usr/standalone/i386/ and /System/Library/CoreServices. You will need an administrator account to do both of the replacements but you also need to unlock the file in the CoreServices folder. To unlock it use this command:

Code:
sudo chflags nouchg /System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi

The replace the file and lock the new boot.efi

Code:
sudo chflags uchg /System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi

Thanks for the help. Didn't know I have to delete first. :)

Another question, does any one have iMessage working? My apple id works on any other supported device (laptop, iPad, iPhone and etc) but not on this. Is this still an known issue? I never had it worked even under Mavericks.

Are you getting any sort of error? iMessage is working fine for me now but I had to call Customer Support with a code provided by the Messages app when trying to login.

iMessage stopped working for me under mavericks, had to ring up apple to get it fixed, still working under Yosemite which I just installed an hour ago.

Yes. I do see an error message asking me to contact apple support with a code. So. when contacting apple, do they ask what machine and OS version? Since this is not supported machine, I'd like to know how you guys respond to customer support.

They may or may not ask you for your serial number. They have even mentioned that I was using a "legacy" Mac Pro but they have never once questioned how I was using iMessage on the machine. I have called at least 6 times now with no issues.

Some options:
  1. Install on a supported Mac. Move or clone the drive to your Mac Pro.
  2. Follow atvusr's guide
  3. Wait for Hennesie2000 to re-post his guide!
  4. Wait for oemden to update the SFOTT tool!

Worked and still Working on it... (of course longer than expected)
As we have to copy the BaseSystem.dmg, I used my first method - that failed when I begun coding this SFOTT utility for Mavericks (And I now know why) - that use Shadow file.

I've just changed dmg creation from UDZO to UDBZ to get a smaller .dmg and now The Install is ok and is curently running at the time of writing.
When using UDZO (with defaults settings aka compression level 1)
the image is 528,5 MB, and the installer laucnhes starts and then complains that Recovery would be too large; and aborts.
when using UDBZ the image is 465,8MB and now the installer start with no complains.
the original baseSytem.dmg is 487,1MB.

I'll do my best to post a beta version for Yosemite but I have to go to sleep as I wake up in 4 hours to go to work.

If all is OK - Install I know is OK - but Recovery partition did not boot in my first attempts. That's why I've tried the shadow method - I'd be very glad it works as it would solve the Recovery partition (well I guess and hope) and that would mean that the 2 weeks I spent on trying this in november where not wasted time and it was a good idea... enough talking my Bed is calling me. Of course I'll tell the forum.

N.B. : I've erased it to test again and again but I installed GMC1 with SFOTT then GMC2 and GMC3 via AppStore on the GUINEA MacMini2,1.

N.B.2 : I also use the verbose boot.efi compiled by Hennesie2000 and now the lately graphic one from mikeboss

I'll discover tomorrow morning if the install went fine and if I can boot the Recovery too.

Cheers.

+10000 to PikerAlpha, Hennesie2000 mikeBoss and all other for providing the compiled boot.efi...
