would you recommend a direct upgrade from Mavericks once the official Yosemite is out? I have tons of audio stuff that would require days of installation and would like to avoid a clean install!

With the new boot.efi it should be good to go?

(I'm currently running 10.9.4 on a dual 3.0 1,1 + HD5770)

You should be fine building an installer with the new boot.efi and using that to upgrade. I think someone (maybe gpatpandp) reported earlier that it is possible to use this new boot.efi with Mavericks as well.

If either I or maybe we can just get Tobyg involved we can get the new lauchdaemon and boot.efi installed before updating, then it might be possible to just install Yosemite directly from the AppStore... not positive on that.

**I am going to try updating a Mavericks Install to Yosemite via the AppStore with Piker's boot.efi in place of Tiamo's for the MacProFix. I'll update later.

While I am all for helping and furthering improvement, I am not entirely certain that anything better can or needs to be accomplished here. Maybe it is just my nature however I am beginning to feel like this might pushing it a bit in perhaps taking advantage of a highly skilled individuals generosity. Maybe it is time to appreciate what has been furnished, express the communities sincerest/deepest appreciation for all that he has done, and let Pike move on to other endeavors.

No one is pushing Pike to do more than he did already, believe me. But since I track his work on all other OS X related endeavors, I think that he's the perfectionist. If he will want to anything beyond what we got from him till today, I will help him as more as I can.
I would never think that I'll have anything to do with VS and such stuff. I learned a lot from this whole project, and I'm grateful for this, especially to Pike R. Alpha.

That is correct, the new boot.efi also works with unsupported OS X 10.8.5 & 10.9.5. My experiences with audio software that requires authorization (Native Instruments, iZotope etc) is that the most effective way to retain it fully from a previous system is to first install the new OS then migrate your apps, preference files etc over rather then install the new OS over the top of the old system.

Yeah it's probably safer but I've never had a single problem doing direct upgrades so far, and that goes back to MacOS 7.5.2 :D

Fortunately all my samples are on separate disks but rebuilding NI databases, Eastwest, ProTools reinstallation, etc - that's not a pretty weekend in perspective! I'll live dangerously and try the upgrade once I build my USB installer :)

Thanks again to all of you for your amazing work so that we can keep our equally amazing MacPros alive!

So upgrading via the App Store doesn't wot because the App Store won't let you install on these Macs. Forgot about that.

I thought about that after reading your post. We should be able to do the updates though once it's installed - just like we do in Mavericks.

Hey,

Thank you for the new boot.efi 10.10.
My MacPro 1.1 > 2.1 flashed 4870 is running with 10.10 GM3.

Who knows, how to modify the Recovery Partiton under 10.10.
Changing the boot.efi on the partiton doesn't succeed?!

Here is the latest build that should have the fixed boot manager screen and boot screen sequence:

Thanks. Boottime in Mavericks and Yosemite: 17 seconds after chime on a SSD Mac Pro 2.1 (with Netkas firmware upgrade). Used the same boot.efi files on both operating systems. Yosemite GM3.

I haven't had a chance to test Pike's boot.efi myself. Can you explain what appearance the boot process of Mavericks or Mountain Lion has with the new boot.efi? I mean, does it have the black background and the white Apple logo and progress bar with those operating systems or does it still look the way the official boot.efi of those systems is supposed to look?

In Yosemite there is a black boot screen with a white Apple logo en grey procesbar. On Mavericks there is a grey bootscreen with grey Apple logo like the default Mac OS X bootscreen. Both boots really fast.

I think the black boot screen is the new default in Yosemite..? In my opinion I rather see grey than black because the first boot stap on a Mac is grey before the OS is booting.

Is it possible to tweak the bootscreen by modifying the boot.efi file or is it located inside the OS (like it is by Hackintosh Macs)?

My Terminal is not usable, after starting the app I can' t write anything or even paste any command into the terminal? Any Idea?

After restore to GM1, Update to GM2 and than to GM3 now everything is o.k. Somehow I directly upgraded from GM1 to GM3 which causes the error (was not able to use Dropbox beta and Skype beta, too)

Has anyone else noticed what appears to be Notification Center crashing on startup?

The icon in the upper shows up immediately after the desktop shows and then it goes away. Many of my startup applications are not launching until it comes back which is as long as 30 seconds.

Hi Hennesie,
I just rebooted to check this issue and i do not have it, but is it a random issue or you noticed it all the time ?

Appears to be happening every boot. I was messing with my hybrid MBR trying to clean up my install and remove a partition so I might have just messed something up. Everything was working fine before so I am guessing that is it, but just wanted to rule out the boot.efi.

Anybody using Little Snitch ?

With Mavericks and Tiamo's boot updating Little Snitch (LS) was making a permanent reboot, i was fade up and didn't update during this time.

When i started Yosemite DP1 it was with Chameleon bootloader that means boot.efi was original and untouched, i installed LS 3.4 without any problems, then i used Pike's boot and updated Yosemite up to GM3, LS was still working well.

Tonight i decided to make a try with LS 3.4.1 and got the same problem, permanent reboot, at the time being i'm SuperDupering my backup to the corrupt SSD.

I don't really understand since LS does work with Yosemite GM3 the issue is only after a LS update.

This is not an issue for me either.

I reinstalled back to GM1 and did the delta updates to GM3 and repaired permissions. While the icon still shows up and goes away it is only for a second or two.

The little three line icon in the far right of the menu bar. It shows up immediately when the desktop loads and then goes away. Then it comes back. I don't see anything in console though. Everything functions fine once it shows back up. It could be something else loading though.

I will reboot a few times and see if I can replicate it.....

Freshly built

Pike has fixed the progress bar

I'm enclosing newly compiled builds (for Win32 and x64) of commit e32061daf1. I don't really know whether the x64 build can boot these old machines, but there goes anyway:

nope, seems to run just fine on my MacPro2,1. I installed yose from a USB stick I created using the public beta 4 installer (on MacPro5,1). updated yesterday to the latest version. I rebooted several times and I wasn't able to replicate your issue.

Pike has fixed the progress bar

Current commits are only for testing legacy grey screen mode.

Peter: no need to post every commit due to above. No difference will be noticeable unless you activate legacy mode before compiling. See Pike's blog for details.
