EDIT: I just found out by myself....:)

One question >>>
I just wanted to plug in some speakers. It works when plugged in to the
headphone jack (front of Mac Pro). Why does it not work when plugged in to
the Audio Out jack (back of the Mac Pro) ?

09 quad 2.66

I just ripped open my quad and checked the cpu. It does have a heat spreader.
Just doesn't make since that the octo. wouldn't. So it may be upgradeable pending on if there is any firmware limitations. Was thinking 3.2 perhaps for the future. Will take pics. if need be.

Which model do you have, 2.66 or 2.93?

I suggest nobody try what I tried. I think the 2.93's aren't even compatible with the 2.26 chipset.

And the problem is, it wont boot. So I think they also did a firmware change to match the CPU it was built with.

The CPU covers on my 2.93's are glued on like concrete.

I could understand maybe there being an issue between 2.26 and higher procs but there shouldn't be an issue going from 2.66 to higher proc as they are same family.

Three questions for you unethical.

1. When you say "won't boot" is this without any HSF attached? That would not surprise me at all (even assuming the above possible incompatability is wrong) and I would also suspect that even if you did have some kind of HS on there it may be necessary for there to be an RPM reading and thermo reading from the integrated fan/thermistor in the stock HSF for boot to occur as it may be seen as a fault condition if either or both are absent. Both of the later can be faked so still not bad news from my perspective.

2. I see in your photos what looks like a spacer plate (gasket) which I'm guessing was over the CPU I when you removed the HSF? Is that correct? If so then "hard mounting" is even less of a stress as that plate will ensure even distribution of stress over the core :D Looks similar to the spacer plates I used to use on my old AMD CPUs when mounting heavy after market coolers.

3. Would you be so kind as to measure (metric prefereably) the distances between the HSF mounting posts please? Even if you have reassembled I notice that the holes are present right through to the top of the Apple HS so measurement should be as simple as pulling out the tray and applying a ruler. Both horizontal measurements between hole centres and a diagonal measurement between hole centres on opposing corners would be fantastic. If you can't be stuffed then that's all good I'll just have to be patient :p Basically water cooling one of these babies is going to require custom hold down plates for the waterblocks as Apple is not using a ZIF socket and seems to be using the normal ZIF socket mounting holes for actual HSF mounting.

Hope these show up. Nobody yell if they don't.

2.66 vz 2.26

well nice pictures raziel777. i can see that only the 2.26 looks different, even the actual heatsink.

WytRaven, i build servers all day and had a bunch of the new 2.93GHz CPU's in stock and wanted to test 2.26 vs 2.93GHz. The reason mine may have NOT booted had nothing to do with the heatsink, but may have been a slight error on a bent pin. or maybe the chipset is different between 2.26 and 2.66/higher.

After putting things back, i noticed 1 pin was bent. i fixed it, and placed the original back, and all worked fine. might mess with it again later on, but not likely.

heatsink measured

- 63mm center to center longest
- 37mm center to center shortest

great group of people here :)

Do the octo's have pins? I don't see them on the quad.

i meant the pins on the board. problem is, the 2.26 is only being held by a small amount of cpu compound, so when i removed it, the cpu popped off and bent one pin on the board, but i fixed it and everything's back to normal.
