so a GTX 780 will be the fastest working GPU update on a 21.1 without issues?

n btw. someone a idea for a more power full PSU? will fit(maybe with modding) the 250W form a 24"?

edit: i think i can solve the PSU problem easly: just will build in a pico psu with 6pin PCIe connector, its possible to bridge with the main PSU / powerbutton...

I would strongly recommend using a K2100M for the 21.5" iMac due to issues with power draw. Though if you are cutting the power draw, it may work, might be an experiment and good knowledge for the thread, but theoretically it's possible. Others here have had issues with less powerful cards in the 21.5" iMacs, even with downclocks.

Hey Everyone,
quick Update: Got my GTX780M flashed with the help of a Friend.
Installed it today, and little success, the Mac seemed to start up. At least this was what i could hear. After a couple of seconds the fans got to maximium mode. When i teared it down again i recognized i forgot the display connector. So i gave it another try, but this time the mac won‘t start up, a short fan spinning and thats it....
Has anybody some ideas about this??

just found this:

and not sure because of the pinout, this will work, or i need to change the place of few cables:

and then this:

i would replace the main power plug with a female DC plug:

for my 330W MSI PSU(i used for eGPU):

opinions / suggestions?

Please read post 1 - have you installed the required SandyBridge kexts for Catalina? If no, please do. If yes, try a reinstall of the kexts; it's possible they are not working correctly or permissions got funky during your first install. Sleep should work just fine with those.

I followed the steps in #3,271 . The Sleep Mode works fine now! But he also mentions the AirPlay, but the Airplay is not working...

Again, I have a 27" iMac 2011 with K1100. Is it possible to enable Airplay?

Thank you so much for your great work!

u put the PCIe power connector in? the heatsink correctly installed? all cables plugged in? few hours ago seen in a YT video, a 12.1 27" 770 denied to start up, because he forgot to plug in any cable o_O

still struggling with a K2100M, I'm trying to flash it with no success - I've measured vcc-and across the W25X20 - and I get nothing, is that normal?
How are other people flashing this board?

Yes, I‘m sure that all cables besides the Display connector we‘re plugged in correct.

may a cable is broken, its really annoying with a mac, because much work to check all the stuff... easiest way to check everything with the cables is fine, put the original card in, n try again... i just take a look for an MXM to PCIe 16x adapter, to flash n try on my main machine, because i know i will get pissed when not works on the first time 😅

This info is not on the first post, but I believe someone mentioned that AirPlay can be enabled by using the Lilu + WhateverGreen kexts. This is not necessary in Mojave, but might do the job in Catalina. Worth a shot, I suppose.

EDIT: Both of my 27" with K1100M have AirPlay in Mojave, but I don't have Catalina installed on either to test. Perhaps this weekend I can get a test volume going.

- I used a CH341a Black edition program, they already solved the 5v vs. 3v problem long ago with this newer edition. It should output about 3.3v to read this chip. You can measure pin 8 and pin 4 to verify you are getting 3.3V.

- I used a SOIC-8 pin clip (best to use Pomona 5250)
- I used Ubuntu with flashrom version 1.1 on a separate laptop
- Make sure the red wire of the clips is on pin 1 of the 'U2' chip
- Make sure you are on the 25SPI BIOS section of the programmer
- After a few tries, it should dump & write

I couldn’t get it work! 🤷🏻‍♂️

You are looking for the most complicated way to reach Rome, aren't you? What is about selling the still working 21,5? Then buy a broken (defect graphics card) 2011 27" iMac and put your card of desire in there. No PSU modding, fitting heat sink from day one, a lot of people to ask here in the forum, and a lot of success stories, latest from Finland this week.

Hello again, I finally got down to work and the light was made, imac med. 2011 of 21.5 ", and Quadro K110M GPU, working perfectly, both in High Sierra and Window 10 under bootcamp, later I will install the Os X Catalina ... I encourage people to perform this update is a wonder ...
Thanks to Nick, and to all the participants of this forum for their contributions !!!!!!

Thanks for your answer - I have the black edition of the programmer, but I seemed to get 5v across the power pins .. I'll play about more this afternoon...

My 2011 27” now running perfect with catalina. Thanks for the thread. It Is great to Keep these machines running. I have maxed the memory. Next I try to Change SuperDrive to sSd or plug another ssd as third sata. Don’t know yet. But xanderon Linux boot usb was great. Also dosdudes Catalina. And thanks for nicks bios also.

hello guys! I am trying to flash my k2000m card with nicks rom but the ch341 program doesn't have the chip in the list and even when I am trying with other options the end message that I get is that time of operations has overpassed and no result!! how should I flash the card? any options?

i like to make possible whats "impossible" thats my nature, in every way ;)

and i dont want a 27" in my rooms, for gaphic stuff i use my 24" dell(100% sRGB & 100% adobeRGB), n this is the best size, but because my better half use the computer too, i need something "small" for the bedroom where i can play while my main machine is in use :D

If you're going to put forth all the effort, I would suggest using the RX 560 (WX4170) that Nick posted a while back. It has significantly less power draw than the 780M with comparable performance. You may still need to tweak the power settings to prevent overdrawing the PSU, but it will certainly be easier to cool as it has a 50W TDP vs a 122W TDP. Benchmarks show it only just barely underperforming the 780M, from what I can see.

Of course, this card might be a bit more work - backlight wire mod is required, and you'll likely need to solder on an EEPROM, but that seems like much LESS of a headache than worrying about picoPSUs, etc.

looks to me like this WX4170 has some eeproms onboard.
I dont know if it will be compatible, and if it has the correct Eeprom size chip.. ?
it's an HP version, but could perhaps be flashed with Nicks vbios.. ?

I think I'm going to give up !

I don't think I 'screwed up', but, at some point, perhaps, I've hit something, or broken something, or ....

But - the net result, on the K2100M card I have, I am unable to program the flash, using a ch341A.

As a test, I have taken my old AMD card, and read the rom on that, with no problem.

I've tested a little around the device - on the AMD card, as expected, there is no short from Vcc to GND... on the "new" card, - there is !!!!

I'd be very interested to hear other peoples advice, thoughts, etc - I've somehow hosed this card....

Really not working? Are whatevergreen and lilu Kexts installed to /S*/L*/E*/
So, after trying to install again Lili.kext and WhateverGreen.kext with the Kext Utility, the log is the following:

It looks that the kexts are already installed. But in Screen Preferences, I can't select the AirPlay Screen (Disabled).

Any clue?

Thank you! :)

Some pages back in this post #4363 there has been a Linux Boot Stick solution announced. I used it yesterday on my already patched and installed iMac/K2100m just to check if the linux nvflash version would work on my already installed card. I could read the BIOS, but just half of it (131 ok 262KB), probably I used it not entirely correct :)

But I guess this may by your solution. From all what I saw you can do this also remotely, i.e. without having a working display on your iMac from a 2nd machine in your local network. Just follow the documentation in that post step by step.

I programmed 10 cards during the last three weeks with my cheap CH341A, sometimes you get no connection, sometimes it comes up with two BIOS chip definitions to choose from, but in the very end it worked.
