Hi
I will get my Dell Quadro K2100M soon
Can I flash it using a Windows 10 64Bits virtual machine (with parallel desktop) or I must flash using a physical windows 10 ?
What is the procedure?
Thanx

i used 3m thermal tape.
Works the best !

see older post with pictures from me, from months ago.. 😜
Also, is it possible to use Cooper heatskink with 5mm high? (See photo) (I still don't have my 780m, arrive Next week

I'm assuming "yes" but see post #2861 (tutorial).

Hi guys, followed this thread for a while, thanks for all the amazing work tributed, cannot praise it enough.

Imac 27" mid-2010 and already did a lot of modding and upgrading. Are replacing a working HD5750 with a freshly received Dell K2100m imported from US, $40, mainly desktop work BUT to go further than High Sierra.

Im gonna try the USB install nvidia VBIOS mod / SSH. Questions are:

1) I will be REALLY sorry to loose the backlight adjust, which I use a lot. I know there a software solutions but I would still be using full brightness.

Is it correct that theres a Raspberry PI solution working? Can someone link to any help?
I do have tools eg. soldering, to mod the iMac, but no experience with Raspberry PI what so ever..

2) If yes, would I be able to swtich out the Raspberry Pi with this Orange Pi zero ..?
Found one second hand in my area - but have no idea how these work 😅

Thanks for all your efforts !!! 💪

Vm's not supported for flashing.
Only use true bootcamp style windows/linux or use a ch341A hardware flasher..

Yes, raspberry pi works with my app(https://github.com/passatgt/imac-pwm-control), but i'm also updating this to work with a custom pwm module which is easier to setup and i think its more reliable. Basically you will need these two things: PWM module and an FTDI usb cable. You need to connect the usb cable to the module and you will need to route the PWM wire out from the iMac(for example at the top vent, or whatever works for you) and connect that to the PWM module also. After that, plug in the usb into the imac and you will be able to control the pwm signal with my app to change the backlight. I will post more details once i got my hands on the module. The one i ordered before is not compatible, so i had to order a different one :)

Only the top row of memory modules will be visible and you can add them there, but its too thick for the rest.

Hello again, I got my K2100 gpu and the x-clamp bracket doesn't seem to want to come off. It appears attached to the card unlike the one from the iMac. The screw holes on the new card with the bracket on are ever so slightly too small.

Does anyone have any advice on how to remove the clamp/bracket off the K2100 so I can swap the old one over? I read over the first post but am unclear if there is someway to remove the old one since it lines up perfectly with the apple x-clamp or if I must drill larger holes in the K2100 k-clamp.

Best way I've found to get them off is heat. Just gently apply with a hairdryer, not a heat gun, or it will get too hot. Just enough to loosen the glue, then use a plastic pry tool to gently and carefully remove.

I held the card in my hand, and using a screwdriver bit a bit smaller than the rivet and pushed the four corners out.

Thanks for your instructions!

Im gonna sound like a noob here; but instead of routing wire out of the iMac, is there no way to “steal” an usb port/signal internally, so the whole installation stays inside the computer?

If you have an idea, I would be willing to make an experiment installation in one of my iMac’s (27” 2009/2010) and document the process.

That did the trick thanks. I had a feeling it was something simple. Upgraded to an i7 and k2100 successfully. Took a little longer than I hoped so I'll save upgrading macOS and flashing for another day.

Yes, that works too. The easiest way is to use the infra port in the middle, you can buy a connector for it, someone did something similar here before. One issue is that its 5V instead of 3.5V and the PWM control works better with 3.5V(you can dim the screen fully). But if something goes wrong with the module, you have to disassemble the imac to fix it. If you route it outside, you can jsut switch back to the original PWM wire easily :) Theres some unused connector(jtag i believe) on the motherboard and there is 3.5V there. If we could find a connector for that, that would be the best to supply power to the pwm module and just use the infrared for for usb data.

I spent some time last week changing out one of my kids 21.5" 2010 iMac video cards for a K1000m. I'll write up a detailed post later on in the week, but in the meantime I used the Winclone idea posted here earlier by FlorisVN to make a package installer Windows 7 Bootcamp so there is no need to install Winclone or do any other trickery. It requires 10.12 Sierra to begin, and it simply adds the bootcamp image to your internal hard drive on a 15GB partition it creates. Teamviewer has been installed, and the NVtools folder is on the desktop with the flash rom files ready to go. Also the Page file and Hibernate file have been pared down to 2GB each to avoid running out of space at 15gb. No bootcamp drivers were loaded to maximize portability. I tried this on a 2010 iMac 21.5 as well as a 2011 iMac 27" and they both worked perfectly for simply creating the bootcamp partition to use for flashing purposes. I also uploaded it to Sync which has unlimited downloads so it shouldn't expire or be pulled if it gets popular. Here's the link to download it, simply unzip the .pkg file and run it in MacOS 10.12 or higher.

Windows 7 Bootcamp pkg installer iMac

a little help needed...
i've just installed the k1100m on my 27" imac.
i've built the usb flash drive and flashed the latest modded bios.
i can boot with the usb and i can see linux boot on screen, so i guess the flash went fine.
as soon i reconnect the osx disk at power on i don't have any image on screen, and just the fan spinning at full speed.
did i miss something?

EDIT: nevermind... a pram reset did the job ;)
EDIT2: i get boot logo and i can choose the boot drive, but can't past the loading screen, i get stuck on loading. Also using a brand new sierra usb installer i get a reboot instead of welcome screen...

so seems the issues with my imac are not solved also with a new gpu..
i can see just the apple logo with loading bar (up to 80-90%), and fan at full speed.
i've (made and) tested so far also sierra/high sierra installer on usb (and i get a reboot after a while).
i can get to the installer menu only using an el capitain usb i had (for my hackintosh), but i get error on install after a while.
any help?

Has the hard drive been replaced with a non Apple drive? What happens when you try to boot to safe mode? Have you reset the PRAM and SMC?

hdd is original, and i guess is not the main issue because it hangs(reboots) also on usb installer
safe mode is same as standard. loading screen, than it hangs on 80-90%
i've resetted pram multiple times, for smc i guess is just removing the power plug for like 5 min, right?

btw this is the result of my flashing under linux:

could the size difference error cause the issues?
and also why if i use my old usb installer (el cap with clover) for hackintosh i can go to the install menu, and if i use an original one it hangs on the progress bar loading screen?

There's an option where you don't need to remove the X-clamp nor to have the "screws" tapped/drilled out!
Simply find 4x 10mm M2 screw and see my post 2 pages ago (with pictures)! :)

Guys, there's no need to remove the X-clamp nor to have the "screws" tapped/drilled out!

Just notice:

  • the inner-filet of the nut in a MXM card's X-clamp matches an M2 threaded rod (first picture below)
  • the captive nuts in the heatsink have a hole in them that's wide enough for M2 (second/third picture below)

Then you'll need:

  • 4 x 10mm M2 bolts for an MXM-A heatsink (pictures below)
  • 4 x 15mm M2 bolts for an MXM-B heatsink
And that's it (pictures below are worth a thousand words)!

a little update on my quest:
seems the internal lcd is detected as external or secondary, because if i use a mini display to vga adapter i can get to the setup screen (or installed os) on imac (but still no image on external monitor).
if the adapter is not connected the mac won't go after the loading screen...
also boot time is super long, also with fresh install or ssd
is available a fix for it?

I received an error message during install. I've got the bootcamp partition and there are files in it. Here's the first error from the log file:

Appreciate any suggestion. It's a mid-2010 iMac 21.5 and I put in the Dell k1100m card. Running normally, just no boot screen. Running High Sierra currently 10.13.6.

Thanks!
