Does anyone know the size of the screws for the x bracket for the Radeon HD 4850?

Thanks.

I've gone back and read the first post a few times and can't seem to find where it talks about fixing sleep issues. My 2011 27" with a K3100M won't return from sleep. I'm looking for how to fix it, right now I just have it set to never go to sleep which is ok I guess.

I'm running High Sierra and am not running OpenCore since the K3100M has native boot selection and native brightness control via the BIOS so I didn't think I needed it until I go for installing Catalina or Big Sur. Is that how I solve the sleep issues?

(I've even gone through the trouble of expanding all (or almost all) of the spoilers and then searching and the word "sleep" only appears twice when talking about sleep issues but nothing on how to fix it. There is mention of OpenCore being used to not have to modify installations and sleep, but I'm not sure that's the solution for me.

thanks

Okay,

this is a classical situation. Because nobody is really clear in his description one has to do guesses. Sleep problems normally happen only on Catalina, Mojave and Big Sur and only on 2011 models. Root cause is in all cases the HD2000 iGPU.

So how could I know you are using still High Sierra when you talk about sleep problems?

It happens on High Sierra only with OpenCore and spoofing an iMacPro1,1 unless you patch the system properly. Since you are not using OC my only guess is the GPU is not working properly. All you guys hate me for this sentence. But I have seen during the last 12 month K3000M, K5000M, K41000M and K3100M doing exactly this in the iMac 2011 and I still own such a card (and my iMacs ran perfectly after a GPU swap). The misbehaving ones went into 2009/2010 systems.

Since I do not know what version of High Sierra you have installed on your iMac my only and last advice is: Do a clean new High Sierra installation, update the firmware to 87.0.0.0.0, and do not install any additional non Apple patcher packages. Update the system completely with all available Apple updates, instead.

If your system is still not waking up after sleep then move the K3100M over into your second non working iMac 2011 to cross check if the system itself is ok.

Happy disassembling!

thanks for the response....

Version info:

High Sierra 10.13.6 - with all updates. Boot Rom is 87.0.0.0.0
Processor is an i5-2400 (which does have the integrated GPU)

Or just set the power preferences to not go to sleep, which seems a lot easier and I don't have to take the system apart again.

The second iMac is going to get a GTX880M when I get some spare time. I just did the mods on the heat sink yesterday and mounted up the GPU, now I just need the time to put it in.

yeah saw that but appart from that one is there any other one instead of the gtx 880m ?
Because this one seem really pricey
The first post has two lists of cards that work (NVIDIA and AMD).

Your question is like asking which hamburger is the best. We could be here all day talking about hamburgers but in the end you have to choose what works for you.

If price is an issue to you, don't ask for the best. Ask for what is available near you, and match it with the list on post #1.
And the best saving solution is: Do not buy the iMac 2011 at all.

And lastly, just type your question in the search box, you'll find your answer there.
In most of the cases, you are not the first one to ask such a short question.

Concur with Nguyen completely.

It is still fair to upgrade an iMac you own if you are so dedicated to.

To buy a 10 years old unsupported iMac and an expansive metal compatible GPU that may not work even after all the demanding steps in flashing and installation and patching ? You better consider your return on investment seriously.

Consider the M1 MacMini or even a cheap PC for your aim.

I'd like to report another successful POST of a modded HP WX4150 card in an iMac12,2 (27' 2011 iMac). I now have two modded HP WX4150 cards happily running in two 27' 2011 machines, reported temperatures are sensible (ie. they are no different from those reported by a machine with a Dell WX4150 built in). I also ran some GPU benchmarks - I did not notice any anomalies after 30 minutes of benchmarking.

On the other hand, while the card did POST without a problem in an iMac11,2 (21.5' 2010 iMac), some sensors reported abnormal values, CPU and ODD fans ran at full speed, and I believe that CPU was throttled. (That's still better than iMac11,2 with an unmodded HP WX4150 card - sometimes it POSTs, sometimes it doesn't, definitely does not POST with a HDD connected.) I replaced it with a Dell WX4150 (from my 27' 2011 machine), which works perfectly. I'm not sure (when) I'll investigate this (iMac11,2 + modded HP WX4150) further.

If your soldering skills are above basic and you have the tools required, please do try this. Here's how I did it:
  • a (at least) 50W soldering iron with precision tip and temperature control (80W+ is better, 50W should be enough for leaded solder)
  • flux (pen)
  • solder wick (to remove excess solder)
  • tweezers
  • magnifying glass (I did not use it, but I should.)
  • a (non-POSTing) HP WX4150 card
  • two 0R 1206 resistors (Buy more. They are really cheap and you will probably destroy one...)
  • 0.5mm (or thinner) solder wire
Two jumpers (the 0R 1206 resistors) are needed between the pads in the orange rectangles under the red arrows (see attached pictures). Those pads had some excess solder on my cards. I removed it with a solder wick to facilitate soldering later. Note that those pads are a part of a (relatively) large copper area, which means that a fair amount of heat will be required to melt the solder. Be very careful not to remove tiny capacitors and other components which are in close proximity. Cover cleared pads with a generous amount of flux. Place the resistor and align it with tweezers. Take your time. Use tweezers (in your left hand) to press down on the middle of the resistor (if it moves, align it again), then pick a small amount of solder with the soldering iron (in your right hand) and solder one pad of the resistor. Remember the 'large copper area'? A certain amount of heat will be required again. (This is really important to avoid cold joints. Believe me...) Again: Be careful not to short the nearby components. If you do, remove the shorts with the solder wick. Repeat for the second pad and second resistor. (Add flux as needed, you can remove excess flux when finished with a toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol.)
I attached some photos of my card before and after the mod.
Success!!

Although I am a lousy solder artist I managed with paste, heat gun, patience to solder the two 0K resistors somehow onto the board and can boot the iMac12,2 27 with this card and can use it with Big Sur.

THIS IS INSANLY GREAT!

Thanks for this development and post!

Note: bottom right corner of the picture in can see one of the resistors...

guys, I installed the Quadro K1100M card by Nick [D] vB 2048 MB, on my Imac mid 2011. It has High Sierra. How do I operate the Brightness control?

awesome work but since they are 0K resistors (essentialy jumpers) u cloud just solder a thin wire across

Hello everyone.
Which card is more compatible/have less issues with mid-2010 27 inch iMac: K1000M or K3100M?

It is more easy to fix the little component than preparing a 2-3 mm long an nearly invisible wire. The costs of the resistors is 1 Euro per 100 pieces, shipping was more expensive :)

All I understand is: OC, Windows, and USB.
