Thanks to this post I'm going to change the graphics card on my 27" 2011 iMac as soon as I get it (I have baked the current HD 6970 and it's working fine, but I know that it's a temporally fix).

I have ordered one new GTX770M from this eBay seller: https://www.ebay.es/itm/NEW-Dell-Al...881512?hash=item5b443d23e8:g:lyMAAOSwwPtcbXHl as it's the only one that I have found that it's selling new cards (unfortunately the shipment and the customs to Europe has increased the bill a bit).

I want to install the card and Mojave in a row. What would be the best way of achieving it? Install the card and then use the MacBook Air to install Mojave in the iMac HDD?

Thanks a lot for all the info and the hints.

Greets from Barcelona

I bought from him too. And have the same target - get Mojave work on device.
I will get device at 17 April. Will report about too.

This card is not good, because it doesn't have a bios chip on it. If you find one that does, you still need to replace it as the apple rom is 128kb and the bios chip on these is 64kb. So its just too much work. Get a k2000m instead :)
Hallo every one
Sorry that iam too buzzy in this time iam working in parallel at home for some renovation
Also thanks for reply , my clevo card is gtx 670 mx alienware with 3gb that what hat the seller sad before to buy it see picture and well thanks

Hi I desperately need help! I have a 2011 27" iMac and just tried an upgrade with a gtx780m taken from an alienware. I have put everything back together and tried booting it up... The iMac powers up but it's just a black turned off screen. Is there something I should have done i.e. install some software before upgrading it? I am running high sierra.

The card I bought is this: Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M 4GB DDR5 MXM 3.0 Type B for Alienware

A black screen is normal because there is no EFI screen on these cards. Do you have any way of telling the iMac is fully booted such as sound when the volume is changing? (The 'pop' sound if enabled) Checking another Mac to see if it's on the network, or having screen sharing enabled? If you are still on a hard drive expect a few minutes before the screen to come on.

Theres no volume audio. It is not connected to my wifi either. So its not in its operating system. I have an SSD in this that works pefectly as i was running my os off it. WHAT ELSE SHOULD I DO?

I forgot to add check the capslock key. Since it's a 780m like mine. Check the X-Clamp around the GPU and make sure any capacitors aren't touching the X-Clamp. Sometimes the card just needs to be reseated. Do you have a mini displaport monitor near by? I recommend not putting the LCD back on untill you can see the OS booted on an external monitor. Use the thunderbolt port closest to the FireWire 800 port. The fans will run on full speed without the LCD connected because there is a thermal sensor on the LCD.

The caps lock is not on. Update: I just installed the original graphics card again and the whole system works fine, including there is a start up chime. So its obviously a compatibility issue. Please try advise as to how I can make it compatible. Should i intall drivers? I think i might have to get a wired keyboard and display port cable to trial and error it but as of right now, the new gtx 780m does not work :( I will continue trying whatever you guys suggest!!!

Need some help from you! And very depressed...
Spend all day installing and reinstalling GTX 770M 3GB MXM 3.0 and card is not working with my iMac 27 (mid 2011).
Could anybody suggest me what to do?
There are 4 lights on motherboard:
1. ON
2. OFF
3. OFF
4. OFF

If I unplug display data cable or display power cable lights become like:
1. ON
2. ON
3. ON
4. OFF

When one of those cables is unplugged, iMac sounds come.
What can be issue? BIOS version? Model? What can I try to do with this card?

BIOS Ver: 80.06.60.00.01

It's a card/hardware issue, while you have your iMac with the old card installed. Please change the following. Go in to system preference change login to automatic, go into sharing and enable screen sharing. And finally enable volume pop. Again check your X-Clamp and make sure nothing is shorting on it. Please show pictures of the back of your card.

BIOS Ver: 80.06.60.00.01

80.06.60.00.01 Is the same vbios version on my 770m in my 21.5" iMac so that's not the issue. Looking at your X-CLAMP you have it touching a capacitor and covering two, which is wrong. I will go back and pull up pictures from one of my old posts for everyone here. You have to grind away areas of your X-CLAMP so nothing shorts on it, that's most likely your problem.
Also when working with the 27" a portion of the heatsink has to be ground away for the heatsink to sit flush with the card.

I just set login to automatic, screen sharing enabled and tested, also tested and made sure automatic login works, going to attempt to replace the gpu to the gtx 780m again

I really don't recommend thermal pads as it can put unnecessary pressure on components, since this mod isn't using OEM components the tolerances are off. I recommend using this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K04D3UK/ its basically the same thing as what Apple used with the AMD card. I also wanted to see pictures of your X-Clamp mod and heatsink mod.

At everyone else here (incuding @DManno3 and @MoreWillFollow) I added a Q/A with pictures to post #1 with pictures so everyone can understand what i'm talking about with the necessary mods.

So I tried to reinstall the gtx 780m and no luck. I attach the picture of the X bracket on the gpu like you asked me to show you the pic. I did not mod the heatsink. What happens is I press the power button, fans turn on but thats it, no chime (even though audio is on full) no pop sound, no caps lock, no remote access, nothing. I tried downloadng the nvidia drivers also. Its clearly the graphics cards' compatibility. The problem is the operating system is not booting. Ill buy a thunderbolt to HDMI tomorrow and try an external display whilst booting. ANY MORE SUGGESTIONS?

You have to mod the Heatsink otherwise you are bending the crap out of the card or the die isn't making contact. Please mod the heatsink and remove the thermal pads for testing purposes.

Could you please explain how i 'mod' the heatsink??? Do I need tools to do that? what does it have to look like? What is 'die'? I secured the GPU lightly, i did not use all the screws. I dont think the problem is the pressure of the heatsink. When you started your iMac after installing your upgraded cpu, did you also have a black screen? how did you boot into mac os?

The picture is on page 1 called "heatsink.jpg" I used a Dremel to cut remove excess area of the heatsink so the card sits perfectly flush with the heatsink. The "Die" is the shiney chip on the GPU that does all the processing and produces heat. If you don't know what a "Die" is, I'm questioning whether or not you should be attempting this. If you bent the card because you didn't Dremel the heatink, which has been discussed the the past 70+ pages. You probably broke your card by bending it/breaking traces under the GPU Die.

Unless, what card did your iMac ship with, was it a 6770m or 6790m. The 6770m heatsink is shorter and doesn't need modifications. Can't tell from your pics.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the heat sink is for transferring the heat right?. Shouldn't the mac turn on without the GPU needing the heatsink? I assume the heatsink is effective after minutes after the mac turns on, But for the initial 1 minute the cpu should just do its job without needing the heatsink. I'm sure I did not damage the GPU yet, I never apply too much force.

Hi all,
I tried to put an NVidia 675m 2GB (DELL) in my 27" iMac 2009 with fried AMD card. The machine was working but with the classic stripes on the screen.

I followed all the steps
1) modded the heatsink with Dremel
2) modded the Dell X-Clamp
3) added thermal paste

Reassembled the machine and it booted in the login screen. But right after the login screen the machine shuts down. I tried to power on back the machine and it will not turn on. It even does not the startup chime!
What could be the problem?
I have an new formatted SSD with High sierra and no nVidia Web Drivers..

No, a 780m die gets hot within the first few seconds it's on. Even though there is no EFI screen. But as it stands, you make it sound like the iMac isn't booting at all. Like there is something wrong with your card, stopping the iMac from booting. The pressure from incorrect thermal pads can bend the card enough to damage it. Which style heatsink do you have.

When you say it doesn't turn on, do the fans spin for a quarter second and the machine turns off? Makes me think something was shorted on your card. Or the die wasn't making good contact. Pictures please, I've never delt with 6xx card only 7xx cards.

After the first time the mac (turned on but didn't boot the operating system) The gtx 780m was not hot at all, felt like the same temperature as i put it in. I use a 'thermal conductivity heat sink paste which is electrically insulating' - says it on the small box it came in. And yes the mac is not booting at all. Like I said, it turns ON and the fans turn ON like normal but it DOESNT boot into the operating system even though the screen is off. (no caps lock working etc,)

There is something wrong with your card, did you buy it from a seller who sells them in bulk?

This is the exact page i bought it from https://www.ebay.ie/itm/Nvidia-GeForce-GTX-780M-4GB-DDR5-MXM-3-0-Type-B-for-Alienware/302976860227?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 Says it has a 3 month warranty on it? I mean its possible to is the card, Ill try connect to an external display tomorrow, if not, I'm going to have to return it if theres no other solution
one last thing, try it with no X-Clamp but very lightly tighten it to the heatsink. Can I see what your heatsink looks like. You really should mod it if it's the larger 6970m heatsink.

Where did that X-Clamp come from, is it Apples? It has a skinny square in the center and not like the fat type Apple uses. Did it come with the MXM card?
