Hey guys, Just wondering.

If i buy myself the 1699$ 27" i3 iMac now and apple decides to update their iMacs very soon. Will be bee seeing SSD drives as standard, and what about the price. Will it stay at 1699$ for the same iMac Model with SSD`s?

I don't think that SSD's would become standard for the new iMacs, at least I sure hope not. I would wager that only a small number of iMac buyers truly need an SSD, imo I think it'd be a pretty stupid move.

Same deal with having 8GB RAM as standard, I think I've seen that suggested. There'd just be so many people who would never use it.

Does anyone know when the 'spec bump' will be released ? I was about to buy a new iMac until I checked on this site for any news on a new release, now I'm totally unsure !

No one know when. The rumor is soon... March-April. I got anxious and bought a couple weeks ago and question if I should have waited. Chances are that it's the same design (which is beautiful) with the Sandy Bridge Core i5Q &i7Q processors and an updated graphics card with the thunderbolt port. I haven't read about any other speculation aside from different screen sizes. I'm not too sure on that though. The sizes are pretty good now.
If the new MacBook Pros are any indication of what's to come for iMacs and you want the best.. Wait. If you just need a fast computer and need it now... Buy the i7 quad core. The resale will be better and it's more than enough muscle.

If removing the chin would lead to any sort of compromises in terms of performance or speaker output, I don't want it removed. :p

Wait or spend 200 more on a refurbished 27" i7quad 2.93. Youll be getting way more bang for your buck and a better graphics card for the huge display.... Or wait and get a new and even faster iMac for same $$.

Although, $1899.0 is a good price.

i would have definitely done that if i were living in the states.

But i live in Norway. The 27" iMac i3 is actually 2400$, insanely overpriced.
i cannot wait for the new iMac, although i need a powerful machine to handle after effects, final cut and such. Will i lose much buying a i3 27" now?

Maybe i can get some relatives in the states to order a refurbished i7 and then ship it to me? But that thing is pretty huge, shipping fee is going to be high i think.

You probably will lose something. Seeing as how apple included i5 sandybridges at minimum for the macbookpros, I possibly see them doing the same for the iMacs. The synthetic benchmark results show the sandybridge cpus being a considerable upgrade in performance over the previous generation nehalem chips.

I agree. I'm sending my refurb back and waiting it out.
I'm sad to see it go even for a month or so. It's just so beautiful!

Although almost outdated, it still does everything in half the time as my C2D MBP.

It will totally suck if they don't release until May-June.

thanks, ill try to stick it out.(got my crappy C2D Macbook 2GB ram)
They're definitely going to give the cheapest 27" i5 Sandy Bridge.

I'd love for Apple to bring the 16:10 ratio back just because it would be a logical step to close this size gap. I like the education idea, but there would also be a regular version of the 21.5" with dedicated graphics. For an education version I'd drop the price to $700 and make it 2 Gigs of RAM and a 100 GB hard drive.

I'm really doubting that this will happen, this is a prediction thread, not a dream thread.

As for Apple bringing bac 16:10, the only thing I see that happening for would be a 30". A 24", if any, would be 16:9. Apple can easily make a cheaper iMac these days to replace the Mac Mini. 21.5" displays cost nothing. Maybe there could be an "iMac Pro" that would be the 27" and 30" and regular iMac 21.5" and 24" ranging from $800-$1400. I don't see why Apple's desktops need to be so much when other all-in-ones are so cheap...

Max RAM of 32GB because that is what the equivalent processors have as max, 32GB!!

That would be a good way of increasing Mac Pro sales. Or shoving people that are on the fence to the dark side (windows). Plenty of people who do not like glossy screens or all in ones but do want to use a Mac. I'm currently in a waiting phase trying to decide what to get. I actually want "it that shall not be named" but will likely have to settle for a mini since the Pro is just way out of reach.

Problem is not if 6 core cpu's will be there. It is the cost, intel doesn't have any budget 6 core cpu's and I doubt they will anytime soon, until they need to since their 4 cores compete with amd's 6 core easily.

Sandy bridge six cores will run nice and cool since they are 32nm instead of the current gen being 45nm for the i5 and i7.

I doubt we will see 6 core in an imac until 2012 the earliest.

Can we expect quad core i5 in the standard configuration 21.5"? I ask because the base 13" MBP has an i5, and theoretically even the lowest iMac will be more powerful than a base 13" MBP. Or is this a matter of the desktop i3 actually being more powerful than the mobile/laptop i5, even if it may be quad core? Seems to me the MBPs have some pretty powerful processors now, and I'm hoping the base iMac will be even better, whenever theyre released.

Wow .. 30" display? Now that would make everyone who bought $1999 current iMac pissed off :D

Man, I doubt I'd be able to go through with it with out some serious buyer's remorse at the price it would cost, but can you imagine....a 27" SB quad iMac with amd graphics and TWO 27" cinema displays

I am eager for the new iMac to be released, so speculation is that it will be released in March-April, is this in the UK as well?

Also, where could I get the best price for my current iMac 27" to sell it before the new one is released.

It certainly will be in the UK too! they release their new computers world wide on the same day.

eBay or provate will be your best bet!

Out of interest, what iMac do you have at the moment and why do you want to upgrade?

I have the top spec from January 2010, which I believe is the Intel i5 2.66ghz, 4gb DDR3 RAM, 1TB Hardrive and the graphics card can't remember what it is...512mb I think though.

I want to upgrade because it's either upgrade the whole computer or just upgrade the ram and graphics, also it will be my last year as a student so I wan't to reap my benefits now ;P

Other than this, no reason really, it runs perfectly, and is still fast.

Oh and I want them to fix the mini display to PS3 thing and include the thunderbolt connection but if they do that or not, I don't know...

An iMac without the chin would be my dream computer. It would look so much nicer without it.

Things this thread has pointed out:

A 30" 16:10 iMac > 27" 16:9 iMac

Apple needs to give us an antiglare option

There's going to be 6XXX graphics. Hopefully 6850 or higher for the high-end

Apple needs to get rid of the iMacs' chin

Apple just needs a redesign. iMacs have hardly changed since the G5

Just throwing out a few ideas Apple should consider...

Off topic, but they're far from crappy. The fact that mine with identical spec to yours is still capable of multi-track recording in Logic Pro 9 with no slowdown is incredible - and it's a four year old machine!
