if the Mini is refreshed (I'll be happy with a mini that has the specs of the 2011 mb pro),

Part of me hopes the Mini won't be refreshed with the iMac because I am planning on getting the top 27". But, if the Mini's get refreshed alongside the iMac's, what will the top Mini configuration need to be to have me buy a Mini?

If they put an i7 in it and a decent GPU, then Mini here I come. If the top is an i5, then I will have a decision to make.

i believe a huge deal breaker for many is going to be the HD3000 if they use it. Some decent graphics and the mini would be a very popular item.

That's good news! I see a shortage on Amazon UK but all the major european Apple sites are shipping the Mini in 24 hours, that I checked. Still, hopefully it's an early sign that stock IS dwindling.

I'm one of the many. I want to get back to gaming on my next computer and while I know mac mini isn't really meant for it, I'm pretty sure it could work. I have a few options if Apple uses a HD3000:

1. Stick with it, be satisfied with lower end graphic performance. It's not as if I can afford a fancy screen anyway so low resolutions shall be plenty.
2. Dish out a few more bucks for an iMac with seperate GPU (if that's not standard on the cheapest one I will surely be unable to afford it)
3. Get an uglier windows machine/hackintosh that soaks up space. I'm very happy with OSX though, and I'm not really looking forward to building a hackintosh. Plus I don't want to get lost in all the different components/options/etc.
4. Get one of the more expensive Dell Zino's and suffer from slower CPU's, but a better GPU. Small, not as ugly as other PC's, but still no Apple.

Another thing I personally like about Mac Mini's is their lower power consumption.

Sadly, I buy a mac mini not for the size, but because I am a college student (and know countless others forced into the mini for OSX as well). Personally i dont care how big the damn thing is as long as they put at least an "average" GPU in, which the 320m and hd3000 are not.

Yes I'm also a college student so the budget is the main consideration, but the size is one of the nice side-effects to me. Like lower power consumption and, well, looks. But yeah, lack of a somewhat decent GPU is having me reconsider.

Why does lower power consumption even matter on a Mac Mini??? It's a desktop computer, so battery life is a non issue since there is no battery and it's always plugged in.

It makes absolutely no sense to argue against a quad-core processor in a Mac Mini because it uses more power. Power saving components should only be factors in battery-operated computers, i.e., not desktops.

I care about lower power consumption in desktop machines because 1) I like saving money on my electricity bill, 2) I subscribe to the whole being green and considerate to the environment movement 3) lower power consumption allows Apple to design very nice, sleek looking, and compact machines, ala the Mac Mini, and 4) It keeps my otherwise sauna-like room at cooler temperatures.

#4 is one of the reasons why I sold my Mac Pro for an iMac. My home studio tends to get very uncomfortably hot and stuffy in the summer time, and since the Mac Pro generates a lot more heat than other Mac computers, it would fill up the place quickly. So switching to an iMac i5 brought my room temps down considerably! It was very noticeable. I can only imagine what it must feel like going down from an iMac quad core to a Mac Mini. :)

Seriously, +1 for lower power consumption.

Why thank you for explaining pretty much my arguments :D.

To elaborate a bit on 3): Standard, big, PSU and fan combo might not fit in such a small pc. I hear that Mini's fan produces less sound as well because it needs to cool less. My 2005 mini's fan makes too much noise though.

Some companies are using 50 mac minis in a room as servers less power means big heat ac and electric savings. I will try to find a link for you.

look at the photos of these server farms 10 watts a mini means big money to them

Why not included i7-2649M @ 4.0 MB ; 2.30 GHz; 2 / 4 crs/thrds ; 25 W

about date of release, think that it will be in stores with Lion, just like June 2010 Mac mini with updated OS and October 2009, if not mistaken, not earlier... or they are not tied strictly to OS updates?
oh, forgot to say, mac mini 2011 will be my first mac, nearly switchin' =) (a little confusin flash problems; videocard don't worrying, got PS3) )
excuses for language, i'm rus, no tomatoes pls ))

That's a big jump in CPU price for the Mini's price to stay the same.

Maybe
i5-2520M @ 2.5GHz @$225 @ 35W

With that processor, I might pass on an i7 iMac and go with a Mini.

your correct, but even with the addition of the mac mini server, only a very small percentage of them are sold and used that way.

agreed to me 10 watts an hour is a max of 720 hours a month at a max of 10 watts is 7.2 kliowatts a month at 25 cents a kwatt it is less then 2 bucks max each month. i can live with that.

Low power, low heat.

I keep mine on all the time. Its quiet, cool, and low cost in power. Makes a GREAT server. (home at least)

I'll be going windows though. I'm interested in cable card tuners and it's just something I can't do with the mini :(

Sandy bridge processors run fairly cooler than previous processors and use less juice. With current prices skyrocketing on just about everything, makes sense to consider electric use.

I'm assuming the Core2 prices you are listing are current prices?

What I would be interested in seeing is the Core2 prices when the 2010 mini was initially released.

Hi there! I'm brand new here, but I've been reading this post since a couple of months..

I really hope Apple is going to release the 2011 Mac mini along with the next iMac update as the rumors are saying it could be next week.. !

The HD 3000 vs 320M don't really bother me, but I really hope they gonna put an i5 or better an i7 !!! Anyway, I'll probably buy two of these : one server edition for my desktop/server pleasure and a base one to use as a HTPC/girlfriend computer.

I can't wait to have these!!

Thank you!

nb. Excuse me for my English... I'm a French-Canadian from Quebec...!

If you buy two computers, can you still afford a girlfriend? :)

Initially i was in for a beautiful 27" iMac i7... But my friend convince me to get a Mac mini instead of the beautiful 27"; as the iMac when it gets old will use much space than the mini and I could continue to use the mini as a server in a small space...! So I can buy 2 with the same $ !! ;)

The mini will share the 2.3GHz dual-core i5 CPU and Intel HD Graphics 3000 from the 13" MBP, (as will the MB when it gets updated too).;)

If we're lucky the mini might get the 2.7GHz dual-core i7 as BTO...:D

They just redesigned the case; no discrete graphics coming anytime soon:(
