So first let me say that I've owned two Minis (right now have one of the 2012 quad refurbs), set my in-laws up with one, and recommended them to many people over the years. I like them a lot, which I guess is why I'm posting here. We can all agree that from a hardware standpoint, Apple has neglected all the Macs for quite a while. But some Macs are ignored more than others and I feel like the Mac Pro and the Mac Mini have something unfortunate in common: they are both niche products that are only kept around so Apple can say they offer a professional workstation and an entry-level desktop. I don't know if professional users are even considering a machine from 2013 in this day and age, but from reading these forums it seems like people are still considering (or even buying) "new" two-year-old Minis. I feel like Apple must still be making money on them, even when they're selling to 3rd party discounters, because the tech only gets cheaper and cheaper for them to produce. When I look at my in-laws, who are still happy with El Cap running on a stock 2010 Mini with a 5400 RPM spinner and 4GB RAM, they would probably think the cheapest 2014 Mini is a supercomputer. So I don't see why Apple would ever update it. I hope I am wrong, but the Mini can always be that "entry-level" desktop no matter how old it is, until someone decides that the iPad or something similar can do that job. Can you imagine what Tim Cook would say if you casually mentioned to him that you were buying a Mac Mini? These are the reasons why I'm very pessimistic on any hardware refresh for the Mini in the foreseeable future, if ever. And I think that's a shame.
