July - no that's today
August - No
Sept - iPhone event
Oct - Historical
Nov - Holidays
Dec - Holidays

That leaves Oct. Oct event is usually a month after Sept event to allow the WOW! factor to fade. Can't be too close to Halloween so that means before the last week. You're down to the 18th or 20th October. I go with 20th October.

It was noted before, Apple events are usually Tuesdays, Oct. 20 is a Thursday. Oct. 20 MAY be the availability date but it will have been announced 2-9 days prior, though sometimes the new models are available at the end of the event.

Nobody on the planet thinks about the Mini except us on here and that broom closet in Cupertino where that one engineer works on updating the Mini during her lunch break.

Senator Barack Obama speaking to a fund raiser at a home in Pacific Heights in San Francisco on Sunday, April 6, 2008: "and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them"

While my wife bought a fancy imac, I for one am clinging to my mini in the hope that something will change in Cupertino and they will come up with a decent upgrade. Sigh. Grrr. Arrrgh.

Your probably right, they could do another event in October given that the September event will be focused around the iPhone, Apple Watch, and possibly the TV but who knows they could cram everything into one or update it quietly.

Are you saying you want Obama to replace Cook as CEO?

Will be called Apple TV 3.0. Specs: 0 GB storage (everything streams to / from icloud for a small monthly fee), 4 GB memory (compression works, right?), 1 hdmi port (who needs anything else?), siri enables you to yell at your TV (everyone does that already anyway) and now it will answer you back, state-of-the-art software MacWrite MacPaint (going backwards worked for iphoto).
I really hope not. :) It would be so easy to get the mini innards up to date and include a usbc port along with the usuals on the back. Matter of fact you would think it would be easy to get their whole mac line-up uptodate. It's a bit boring reading about watches and phones all the time.

Chiclet keyboards: half the speed, half the accuracy.
I'm using an old Dell kybd on my mini. Sawed down the capslock key to reduce accidents.
If Apple doesn't update soon, I may have to spring for a Pro.
Maybe I'll go Linux instead. It's been getting less glitchy for a few years now, and I can do real RS232 stuff with it.

I really think they have to update the mini soon, or retire it (or possibly replace it, along the same lines as the new MacBook…)

Look how long the Thunderbolt display was allowed to languish before it was finally withdrawn from the market.

If we're going to see a "2016 Mini", it will probably arrive -after- the MacBook Pro line and the iMac line has been fully updated. Perhaps November/December? Or even in January/February 2017?

If Apple has no intention of designing/releasing an updated Mini, I wouldn't be surprised if they let the current model linger on the market at least through 2017...

So first let me say that I've owned two Minis (right now have one of the 2012 quad refurbs), set my in-laws up with one, and recommended them to many people over the years. I like them a lot, which I guess is why I'm posting here. We can all agree that from a hardware standpoint, Apple has neglected all the Macs for quite a while. But some Macs are ignored more than others and I feel like the Mac Pro and the Mac Mini have something unfortunate in common: they are both niche products that are only kept around so Apple can say they offer a professional workstation and an entry-level desktop. I don't know if professional users are even considering a machine from 2013 in this day and age, but from reading these forums it seems like people are still considering (or even buying) "new" two-year-old Minis. I feel like Apple must still be making money on them, even when they're selling to 3rd party discounters, because the tech only gets cheaper and cheaper for them to produce. When I look at my in-laws, who are still happy with El Cap running on a stock 2010 Mini with a 5400 RPM spinner and 4GB RAM, they would probably think the cheapest 2014 Mini is a supercomputer. So I don't see why Apple would ever update it. I hope I am wrong, but the Mini can always be that "entry-level" desktop no matter how old it is, until someone decides that the iPad or something similar can do that job. Can you imagine what Tim Cook would say if you casually mentioned to him that you were buying a Mac Mini? These are the reasons why I'm very pessimistic on any hardware refresh for the Mini in the foreseeable future, if ever. And I think that's a shame.

They need Something for iCloud, iTunes, MAS caching. As a default server or maybe just caching won't run via wifi.

First post(well in a very very long time anyway).

Been a Mac user(and used to post on MR in the early 2000s) for a long time now.

Looking for a mini number cruncher over the past few weeks, and i'm quite stunned at the state of Mac hardware. It really does seem like the Mac is languishing, specifically the Pro and Mini. I cant believe that the Mini hasn't been upgraded for almost 2 years!

And for the first time in almost 17 years, i'm actually looking at alternative hardware (specifically the Intel NUCs).... and i'm not happy about it.

Not looking good, is it. They are going to have to deliver some serious upgrades soon to stay competitive in those sectors of the market.

A Linux box is increasingly figuring into my comp plans, probably my Xmas 2017 present to myself.

Be sticking with an Apple laptop though. :apple: :)

Mac sales are up relative to the decline of WinPC sales and they are up for the quarter relative to last quarter's Mac sales.

Apparently we are a bunch of chumps that will buy anything, old model or not.

The NUCs are actually nice little boxes. We use them at work for testing apps on various servers using VMware. As long as you don't need graphics horsepower or expansion card slots, they are great.

Yeah, i dont really need high end graphics or OpenCL. And then there's... 'Skull Canyon'.... i don't see Apple putting that proc into the MacMinis in the future. (http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/nuc/change-the-game-with-nuc.html)

On the flip side, i'm well over due to upgrade my Mac, so i wonder if i should just wait and buy a new Mini (if and when its released (emphasis on "if")).

I have seriously considered the Skull Canyon and with an LG 27UD88 4k monitor in lieu of an iMac.

I'll only buy a new MM if it includes Skylake CPU and DDR4, stock SSD will be great too. Perhaps getting 21' iMac?

Given how things are going -

Will be just a mild bump in Dual Core cpu, perhaps latest Intel on board video, HDMI 1.x, ONE USB 3.x/C, and of course they will seal it up so you cant upgrade memory. In short, might be better off to get the low end Macbook and break off the screen (sigh).

If there is a new Mac mini coming, wouldn't components have leaked in a similar way to every year with the iPhone? Wouldn't we know about it by now if it were being released in the Autumn?

Certainly, Apple does test products before releasing them. :) If there were to be an update to the Mini in the near future, some sort of evidence should be showing up in the rumor mill.

I think Apple really is moving away from the PC business. At least the desktop PC business. Mobile devices are all they think about these days.
