I'll only buy a new MM if it includes Skylake CPU and DDR4, stock SSD will be great too. Perhaps getting 21' iMac?

Why is DD4 such a big deal?

Certainly, Apple does test products before releasing them. :) If there were to be an update to the Mini in the near future, some sort of evidence should be showing up in the rumor mill.

I think Apple really is moving away from the PC business. At least the desktop PC business. Mobile devices are all they think about these days.

There were absolutely no rumors prior to the 2014 mini.

the Mac Pro and the Mac Mini have something unfortunate in common: they are both niche products that are only kept around so Apple can say they offer a professional workstation and an entry-level desktop.

Actually the mac mini was more than an entry-level machine. It was the first small form factor unix box. Lots of them were purchased for rack mounting. Today of course there are even smaller form factor intel boxes. This is yet another market that Apple created and abandoned.

Regretfully, I'm starting to think there may never be a new Mac Mini, given Apple's almost complete lack of interest in their now moribund computer line.
Apparently watchbands are where it's at these days in Cupertino.
Sad.

Wouldn't Apple really want to support Ultra HD (i.e. 8K)? 4K gives you the clarity of a VHS video cassette.
I don't know if HDMI 2.0 supports that, or if there is an HDMI specification that supports that. But I want my 3440x1440 screen, and thus an HDMI 2.0 port -- they better give it!

Actually, there is a chance, that they will EOL most of their desktop products (except maybe iMacs).

I doubt this because Minis are not hard to produce and used in lots of places where iMac will be too expensive choice.

Even iPod Touch is still alive, why would they kill an entry-level product that is affordable for students? Also I bet Apple developers use Minis for build servers.

A desktop tower PC would be even easier to produce, but Apple decided to axe them long ago. They apparently wanted to maximize iMac sales, and so any other Macs that might compete were removed. The Mini and Pro live on only because they are at the far low-end and far high-end of the performance scale, regions where the iMac cannot compete.

This is why the Mini has been limited to fairly pathetic CPU & GPU performance, even though it is possible to fit so much more into an SFF product (as Intel's Skull Canyon shows). And why the Pro has been limited to thoroughly ridiculous choices of CPU, GPU, and RAM, pushing the price tag far out of reach of normal consumers.

Given that Apple is less and less interested in non-mobile computing, I could certainly see them simply axing the low and high end models, and continuing on solely with the iMac.

I am a little perplexed at why they created a neat new form for the Mac Pro, and then left it to languish and fall behind the competition on specs. What is the point of that?

All things considered, I am looking at my next routine desktop upgrade in 18-24 months. Should know well before then where Apple are going with desktops.

So when Ming-Chi Kuo publishes reports about upcoming Apple products, is it because he chooses what to investigate or are their contents determined by demand from clients paying the financial analysts?

It occurred to me that there may actually be information out there about Mac mini and Mac Pro, but no-one is really looking for it or reporting it due to a presupposed focus on iPhone (& to a lesser extent, iPad), Apple Watch, laptops/mobile computing.

Really? In my experience, it seems like anything at all involving Apple seems to be of interest, given the intense secrecy of the company. Any crumbs of information dropped about any product tend to get swept up fairly quickly...

Yes, I believe what I suggested may be the case. Apple has become financially successful almost despite the Mac. Now, a large proportion of customers & investors are really only focused on what's new in the iPhone/iOS sector.

I can't point to anything definite to support this, it is admittedly just an impression I get.

I think some of it may be perception. You don't see people walking around with a MBP stuck to their face, or taking selfies in front of landmarks with one. It may be because the iPhone and iPads are SO visible because they're hand-held devices you see them a lot more.

Very true, but I wasn't really referring to how often you see iOS devices versus MacBook etc.
I was focussing on the fact that the iOS platform + ecosystem is clearly now the major driver of revenue & profit at Apple, thereby being the thing investors & financial sector are interested in the most.

There is usually no leaks on the Mini. They either show up in a silent refresh or get a 10 second announcement in the September/October event.

Sometimes there are leaks on iMacs as with the laptops.

Perhaps the paradigm shift was mobility and the ability to impact people immediately verses those who control the flow of information by getting up from the desktop and walking away. Perhaps they want total control to the point where you view the entire world through your iPhone - thus you'll react and be impacted immediately - perhaps stepping in front of a bus or missing a step.

Those who can be lead blindly offer their support and money blindly!

I wonder what the impact is when we consume information at ever increasing rates without the filters of human interaction, walking down the street, observation through interaction, time and space. What's the price for the hive mentality - where is this going?

The next paradigm shift will remove the actual device from your hands and place it in your body. it will speak NOT MacOS or Windows - it will care NOT whether Android or iPhone. It will forever change us from what we are to ... well, I'll leave that up to you!

everyone says there are no mini leaks but there was something that came out about the mini early 2016.. I think it was in the videos that toured Apple's 'semi-secret labs'. I think there were some new mac mini boards being tested in that location.

PS: I could be wrong but I vaguely remember that and I'm sure it was not a dream..

I'm sure a new one is coming out, but even if this comes true, I'm sure the mini will be the first desktop to eventually get an A11 / A12 processors. I expect the mini to eventually be the size of an AppleTV with a M2 drive, hdmi, wifi AC,usb-c and be around 300-400$.

I do remember they were running special Minis to test something but I can't remember either.

I've given up hope for any meaningful update but it would be nice if Apple would take care to provide one. Sure wish they never soldered Ram and eliminated the server edition. My hack is my favorite new toy but I would like to have a shiny new server from Apple.

I do agree that the A series will be the choice of Apple for future lower tier products.

They are so IOS any more I losing faith with the future of Apple macOS computers.
