Didn't know that but it's funny that receiving a green message bothers those other family members lol. Pretty dumb.

Its not just the color bubble. If you have a group message thread going with a bunch of iPhones, and one non-iPhone enters the thread, then any video or picture sent by ANYONE in the thread will be degraded to near unusable quality. I only really do group messaging with my family and we just use GroupMe. But imagine you are a mother of a couple of school age kids, and are in dozens of group chats with other moms, and most of them have iPhones. You end up screwing things up for all the rest. That's not an easy pill to swallow, and in the US it is forcing the competition out.

Or maybe some people get something out of the ecosystem, and saying they’re suckered is just engaging in team-play.

It has nothing to do with Apple’s ecosystem. It is the FACT that MMS degrades the quality of pictures and video. iMessages doesn’t. WhatsApp doesn’t. Messenger doesn’t. But you are only upset at Apple. Why?

Because apple has this elitist crap where it segregates people ...reminds me of certain despot... by not making available IMessage on other platforms when others like Whatsapp etc do

Nobody has been suckered into anything

People who use the Apple ecosystem enjoy doing so and think it’s far better than just depending on android devices as it simply doesn’t and never will integrate as good as Apple products.

Those who don’t enjoy that ecosystem should just sell all their apple products and move to android. Which at least they can do as unlike android devices resell value is so good they can still get good value back.

Why would Apple make its iMessage available for other phone makers and hurt its sales in the process? If WhatsApp or Messenger made phones, they too would limit their app to their phone. Capitalism is not a charity. The purpose is to maximize profits. By making iMessage available to Android phone makers, Apple hurts its profits. Apple didn’t invent the rules of capitalism.

Apple is not a software company, and it is not elitist for them to not port their software over to competing platforms. Apple is a hardware company.

Google does it, why cant Apple? You can get all of Googles apps on iOS. Google gives you unlimited space on Google photos for pics and videos, why cant Apple do that? Both make profits and are bazilionaires. It wont hurt Apples profits but greed is their thing. They want to lock you into their world and dont care about the people. They slowed your old phones down with no warning on purpose and only fixed that when it came out they were doing it for their gain, dispite what they said afterwords.

Because Apple doesn’t use your data to make money? You do know that Google isn’t doing it out of the kindness of their hearts, right?

Giving everyone unlimited space on Google photos is making them money? How exactly? Apple is making money by only giving you 5GB then charging you for more space. Is that ok because it is Apple?
Apple uses your data to make money, just not to the extreme.

Google uses your images to target you for ads. It’s right in the terms of service. I never said that it was wrong for Google to make money, by the way. Please refrain from putting words in my mouth. I stated that Google makes money from you putting pictures in their cloud services, even if it’s “free”. Apple just sits pictures in a cloud and makes no money from them.

How do you think Apple makes money from our data?

They could do that by giving you limited space like Apple but they don't. Apple does it too, it's on the interest of you look. But not like Google does.

The more images you store in Google’s cloud, the more money they make off you because the better they can tailor their ads to you. I would have thought that’d be obvious. Not to mention they get to look good about giving unlimited while most people will only use a few GB.

I also haven’t been able to find anything on the internet about Apple using my data to make money. But I can look at what data I’m sharing and it looks like analytics.

Really I notice ads on Facebook than anything else. I notice ads also on things we have searched on Google and eBay but not from my pics. I'm just not buying that. I have a lot of pics of our dogs on Google photos but don't get ads for Dog stuff.

Using search I can see but not not with pics. I don't search for dog stuff but do for music stuff. Guitars, Amps, etc.
I get ads for those but not dogs and like I said I have a lot of pics of our dogs on there.

So tell me why you think it is they do it. The only other reason I can think of is to feed into their ML algorithms. This is opposed to the straight forward “we sell you space and you put your photos there” approach.

The same reason they feed their employees for free while Apple doesn't. Gives them more freedom at work like they have a haircut place there for them, a laundry facility, let them bring their dogs to work, been told Google pays them better than Apple. If they don't want to eat in the cafeteria, they rotate in four different food trucks everyday.

I have been working up in the Bay Area for the last three years and I've worked on a couple of Google campas' and on Apples. I've worked on Apples new spaceship campus. I live two miles from there. I hear feedback from their people often. It's not always a money Grab with Google.

To retain employees in an extremely competitive market? I don’t see what their employee benefit package has to do with how they benefit from images.

Google does that stuff to keep employees on campus and working as much as possible.

Apple doesn't want to retain their employees in that same competive market? The point is Apple won't give anything away while Google does. But you will see it how you want.

Apple doesn’t feel they need to do those things. And no company gives anything away. They all calculate to figure out the bare minimum they can do to get the most result.

How do you know how they feel? Do you live near there or know their head guys?

I have worked at another tech company years ago up there that also fed their employees for free. Catered in lunch from a deli everyday. Every Friday they had a catered BBG and the vending machines were all free. They didn't make phones or anything like that. Smart phones weren't even a thing then.

Some busineses are just better to work for than others and do things for their employees because they can.
I did not actually work for that company,i did other work for them in other capacities and they let me have those same benefits.
So yes, some companies do give things away and thats two in Apples neighborhood that I've been around and saw firsthand.

If Apple was so bad to work for, nobody would work there.
