But the only option for all windows active back in 2016 was the Pro 12.9. The Pro 10.5 with 4GB wasn't released until almost a year later. If one could've afforded to wait before upgrading in 2016, the Pro 10.5 was certainly worth the wait. If not, the Pro 9.7 was a decent option.
Yeah, I was referring more to my situation as someone who had a 9.7" Pro when the 10.5" was announced with 4 GB of RAM. My initial reaction was that I didn't want to upgrade because they weren't that different. But the RAM thing bothered me enough that I ended up doing it anyway.

I didn't upgrade my Pro 9.7 but I did get a Pro 12.9 to complement my existing iPad. :p I wanted a 12.9 but it's too big and heavy to be my only iPad and my 16GB Air was already pretty long in the tooth and frustrating to use (mostly due to lack of storage). I could barely do anything without the darned thing complaining about lack of free space.

If I don't like the new upcoming Pros, I'll probably buy a refurb 10.5 512GB LTE for posterity. :)

My problem is that I'm almost certainly going to like them and it's going to be hard to resist, but I want to focus on my more mobile stuff this year. The Apple Watch upgrade has to happen this year, and if they update the AirPods I'm going to get those and give my old pair to my son. I'm already drooling over the larger form factor iPhone X style phone as well.

I'm still on the iPhone 7 and don't foresee upgrading unless carriers offer a deal that's too good to resist (e.g. got my iPhone 7 for $649 off with iPhone 6 trade-in). I do plan on getting the $29 battery replacement around Nov/Dec. :p

The iPads are the only upgrades I look forward to, but even there, I can be selective although storage bumps are always a day one purchase for me.

Tried the Apple Watch but it's too thick. Until Apple can thin them down while maintaining good battery life, I won't be getting one.

My doctor had recently weighed me at 258.8 lbs when I got my Apple Watch, and I am now consistently in the 180s. No weight loss regimen I ever tried before buying the Apple Watch ever worked for me. But once I started tracking my workouts and calorie burn and realizing that exercising for 30 minutes can be eaten back and then some in one hamburger, I started dropping weight fast. There was something about the rings and the little encouragements from my Apple Watch that really clicked with me. I have worn it every single day since 2015, and I'm going to box it up and keep it once I upgrade. It has some sentimental value and has been to hell and back with me.

SO....now that I use it for so many more things than when I started (notification triage, messaging, home automation, music, etc.) I'm really itching for a new one. It's a much more important upgrade to me this year than an iPad is.

Good for you! :D

Personally, the Apple Watch doesn't don't do a thing for me as far as motivation. I'm actually good when it comes to eating (portion control) and I'm only a little overweight. I just don't get enough exercise and the Apple Watch hasn't really managed to help with that for me. :p

I’m currently still using an ipad mini 2 with a cracked screen & broken home button...so YES, i will definitely be upgrading to the mew ipad pros when they come out! Can’t wait.

I’ve updated to every iPad except the minis but I haven’t upgraded my iPhone past the 6. If they remove the headphone socket on the new one I’ll migrate phone and tablet to android. My MacBook is ready for replacement too but I don’t want that silly bar they’ve introduced. Why do Apple keep doing stupid stuff.

No.

It still does the job, and it is still being depreciated for tax purposes. Where i live, i can get the tax back on IT type hardware that I use for work (and my iPad is at least 50-60% for work) over 3 years.

edit:
bought my 10.5 on day of release. was an upgrade from an iPad 4.

I plan to if the bezels are made smaller and screen size optimised on the 12.9. I like touch id and am not bothered whether it gets face id or not. It's all about the screen for me. I've saved up for a new one over the last year and am ready whenever they are. I will be hanging onto my 7+ and getting the battery replaced as I can only afford one or the other per year.

Just wanted to say good on you. That’s responsible thinking. Seems like more and more people get upgrade fever especially on the phones with that upgrade plan. You’ll be paying a monthly hardware bill till the end of time. I try and save up and buy my toys outright. Keeps me from buying things I can’t afford. The old fashioned way ... save up for it. Enjoy your new iPad. I’m waiting for the 12.9 as well.

Thank you! I never used to save up for anything and would just buy things if I had enough money but now I'm actually really poor, I have a special fund for tech only and feel it's fair enough to get it. Actually last year I was able to sell my 9.7 for quite a good price which meant my 10.5 cost very little and I ended up using my tech fund for something else. I do love my 10.5 though and would be reluctant to see it go. This time I might be a 2 iPad owner for a while until I find out whether the 12.9 will turn out to be portable enough for me. If it is, my 10.5 will be off to a new home...

I hope the 12.9, when it finally comes, is exactly what you're hoping for too. To be honest, the anticipation is half the pleasure.

My IPP 10.5 is the best iPad I have ever owned. I didn’t think I would like or use the Pencil but after buying it to test for someone I kept it and love it. Use it daily. My IPP still does all I ask of it, including editing photos in Lightroom Mobile (Raw and JPEG). I just checked and my AC+ will expire 8/2019. I usually sell/re-buy right before those dates.

I will be torn on the new iPad as I went through hell with the keyboard issue on the MBP and now only use my IPP and iMac at home. My next MBP.. might just be the new large IPP. The 10.5 isn’t too big but the 12.9 is. If the new ‘12.9’ comes in a good bit smaller that may be the direction I go.

WTS, I won’t be an early adopter and I may wait until it is offered as a refurb to save some cash now that I cannot live without cellular on my iPad. With the IPP doing 90% of what I would need done and an iMac at home I am having a very hard time justifying owning a $2K MPB and an IPP.

I was seriously considering it, I bought an IPP 10.5 last year and it was a game changer for me (upgraded from ipad mini 2). I was so in love that I must have bought every smart cover at the store (also bought the smart keyboard). I was game on changing to a new model this year if the size remained the same, but given this week's rumors about apple changing the smart connector's place, as I might not be able to use my current smart keyboard I'd feel really guilty buying the new model just cause the screen is a little bigger or for the face ID which is nice I guess but it really doesn't bother me not to have it at this point.

If when released it turns out that I can use my covers and keyboards with the new model I might consider it again. The truth is that the current IPP is beast in terms of specs and can easily be used for another year or 2 without feeling like I'm missing on something huge.

Smart thinking. Upgrade if you really need it. Not just for whiz bang features.

Your current 10.5 is a beast. A new release doesn’t make it any less of a beast.

More and more I don’t change my toys out as fast as before. As long as it does what it’s supposed to and is still a good tool, I tend to keep it until I REALLY need to upgrade. I’m trying to get a minimum of 3 years use out of watch, phone, laptops etc. heck I could get 5 out of a laptop but I’m an author who travels extensively and need my main money maker to always have full warranty support. That’s the only reason I would switch them out for something new. Office, safari, mail and calendar doesn’t need tons of power.

sracer isn’t a huge fan of iOS for his/her particular workflows.

Ok, look, everyone should choose what they prefer and that's fine. But I almost have the feeling that some people are intentionally here to be negative. If they are not a fan of iOS and prefer something as.... specific as Chrome OS - I'd say they are on the wrong forum.

No, seriously, if you're into Chromebooks and don't like iOS - and you're still coming here it's like, intentionally visiting a Pizza forum to talk about how you would much rather eat Hamburgers.

Chromebooks.... What will I read next? I'm guessing people praising Windows Me in Mojave beta discussions.

Haha—hey, I’m with you! I think Chromebooks are ridiculously stupid! But sracer really isn’t trolling. He/she just has different needs out of a portable.

I’m now more excited to see what Apple comes up with, now that we know no notch and uniformly trimmed bezels (from iOS 12 beta icon leak) but...

No TouchID on a tablet, possibly no headphone jack, and at least a maintained premium price (forked over a lot for my 12.9 gen 2 even though I got the base and for $100 less than MSRP not long after it came out)... and no jailbreak,

Also I like trimmed bezels, but there are times having ‘fat’ bezels actually comes in handy to manhandle the unwieldy device.

And I don’t wanna buy ANOTHER Smart Keyboard.

All elements combined, I am curious but its probably going to be a hard pass.

Still love my 12.9” / ProMotion

You have so many devices ! how do you find to use them all ? !!!

I really want to upgrade. I dont have the 2017 Pro, I have an air 2. I am really hoping the price isn't increased just for Face ID. Overall the standard higher processor upgrade and Face ID are the only things I have heard about it. I wonder if there will be more?

The same with me. Especially with the 12.9 the mobility won't be that much improved if you reduce the bezels a bit. It will still be a big iPad. Just upgraded to a used 2017 version with 512GB and am very happy with it and don't want to give up TouchID and the headphone jack. Even the bezels are useful sometimes. If they have to reduce the bezels they should at least enlarge the display a little. The whole thing gets interesting again with an OLED display....

A Chromebook over an iPad? Seriously?
Yes. There are some workflows and use cases that benefit from using a chromebook (in particular the 2-in-1 Chromebook Pro) over the iPad. Heck, even an android hybrid like the Lenovo Yoga Book (Android) served me better on trips than a 12.9 iPad Pro.

You must be new here if you think I'm not a fan of iOS. But in the simplistic worldview that requires blind fawning over something as being a "true fan", I guess your comments make sense.
