This is REALLY bad. The i9 2.9ghz cannot even maintain the base speed of the i7 2.2ghz when under load, which makes the higher clock speed and turbo completely useless.

Long story short, the 2.9ghz i9 is much worse than the 2.2ghz i7.

I was considering purchasing the i9. When I clicked the “Which processor is right for you?” above the processors on the configuration page, I noticed that Apple stated, “Upgrading to the Intel Core i9 processor will take your speeds even higher. The i9 features Thermal Velocity Boost, which enables the CPU to opportunistically turbo up to 4.8GHz when workloads and system thermals allow.”

New D2D video.

I really, really want to get the i9. It’s the most top of line CPU they’ve released in the MBP relative to the time in a long while.

... but that’s just bad. Hoping a couple other reviews hit in the coming days to say otherwise. Doubt it; but if true, really don’t understand buying the i9 under any circumstance.

I really like Dave 2D videos, and I appreciate where he's coming from especially as a Mac fan.

In all honesty, I was worried about that the i9 was going to have thermal issues in the extremely thin case. What's really disappointing is Apple releasing a laptop configuration that they had to know was going to run too hot. Its possible that Dave2D got a defective unit, but that's unlikely when we have another video detailing the throttling.

Looks like I will be returning i9 2.9 for an i7 2.2 model with a bigger SSD.

I really wish someone reviews the 2.6 i7 since this is what I am planning to go for. Unfortunately all YouTubers want to just flex their wallets showing those i9s with 4 TB storage :/

my wallet would crumble at that flexiblity range :p

Having watched the D2D video, another victim it seems to the powerful Coffeelake chips? Some Window laptops have also suffered a similar fate with a thin chassis.

Could software/OS updates help? Eg a more aggressive fan profile?

After seeing the crazy improvements D2D got when he used a freezer, I am tempted to add a mobile freezer in my desk or some kind of air conditioning solution :D.

Wonder if the 13” i7 or 15” i7 has any similar issues - or is this strictly an i9 issue?

ROFL. What even is the point of the 'not optimized' crowd? Using more cores uses more heat, if it's not using all of the cores it's going to even have MORE heating issues when it does

The Intel 8th gen has consistently ran hotter across the board to begin with. Intel did a half assed update and stole AMDs 'moar cores!' plan of attack when AMD finally got some good competition going...

Probably the software is hard-coded to use 4 threads max.

I will assume that you are joking.

Nevertheless, i9 chips with 6 cores can run 12 threads and any modern quad core i7 chip can run 8 threads.

Indeed.

Everyone is blinded by the fact Dave2D is using Premiere instead of FCPX.

Guess what? It doesn't matter.

He only needed something to put the processor to work that would produce a baseline result to compare. He could have used a program to calculate Pi digits. The problem here is heat, not software optimization.

I wish someone can do a comparison between the i7 base and the i9, maybe it's just a general 8th gen CPU issues that's happening in all models instead of just the i9? Need more tests.

I have the 2.2ghz base 15" and I got thermal throttling during a Cinebench benchmark.. Within about 20 seconds. Screenshot of it below (just got the screenshot in time to catch the start of the test at the far left - obviously the test ended when the frequency went back up):

Something tells me we are about to have a ‘2012 quad core Mac mini’ thing going on with mid to high range 2017 MacBook pros soon...
