Last 2 days for me to buy an AppleCare+ - I paid $2800 for the device, AppleCare+ is ~$380 - so ~%14 for my purchase price

I know from experience at least the batteries don't last 2 years, and with this heat issue, and some people getting their logic boards replaced because of kernel panics etc. - I can't decide whether to plunge the $380 or not

If I sell this device within a year, I know I won't get the $380 back, maybe $200 value from it at most

Basically I hope they produce one last Intel model with mini-LED screens, and I'd probably sell mine second hand and buy that model when it arrives

Anyway, I'm just blabbering, but with these both issues, I guess it's a must to buy the $380 Apple Care for the 3 year total warranty isn't it, because I suspect a majority of these devices will fail from heats with regular usage, while I baby mine and disconnect it / let it sleep free every day - I still think it will fail

What did you guys do, bought the Apple Care+ even for base models?
Always apple care + for me.
I simply see it as a must for any apple devices.
It helped me to get my screen replaced due to dust allocating in iMac, iPad that was giving me issues and iPhone then started to act weird near 2.5 years mark.

I have a 16" MBP with a 5300M.

I have an external 4K and an external WQHD hooked up, as well as the MBP open too. So triple screens. It's currently sitting at 65-70 degC, but I can't hear the fan. However certain applications do push it over into warm and loud. Chrome can do it (I use Edge). Any time Google Meet/Hangout is open it really spins up the fans. Xcodes iOS Simulator does it too.

But other than that, I don't tend to hear the fans and don't see the temp change that much.

any way we can get screenshots and pics of the set up? i have the same model. Still have never met anyone irl that doesn't get overheated >> fan with external. two people on this forum so far have made claims theres no real issue for them and you might be the third? try playing a video maxed with just the 4k part of the setup. its encouraging at least that maybe everyone still under warranty can swap out their overheated macbook more easily if theres proven anecdotes that the issue doesn't happen to every macbook. a video would be even better! thank you (prayer hands)

dropped my i9 5500 off at UPS today, once apple receives it they will issue my 5600 upgrade. I have paid nothing for the upgrade.

As a reminder - I had 5 replacements starting with 3 i7 5300 who overheated, apples encouragement to pay more and upgrade myself to the i9 5500, and then a replacement on that (due to constant kernel panic crashes and overheating) and now it has been returned, with a 5600 soon to be shipped.

I was persistent, I will be without a machine for a while, but I have been able to have apple acknowledge it is a problem, and obviously they believe the HBM2 memory does not exhibit the same issues - or why else issue me an 875$ upgrade.

apple won't do anything for you unless you have had at least 3 attempts to fix the hardware, I have on my file 5 apple store visits, all the capture data time spent with the techs and specialists, and the 3 different senior advisors who have said "not ok".

so there you have it. I would not expect you will get the same treatment, unless you have exhausted the same avenues of repair, but, worked out in the end for me I suppose... again. I don't have the new machine in hand yet, so I'm still partially holding my breath!

please keep us updated. also, did you have apple care plus on your macbook? and where are you from? all the apple stores are closed until further notice with covid, so its been really difficult to initiate repair.

Just for clarity, I won't say that the issue doesn't exist. "Fine for me" doesn't make it ok. I just figured I'd add some more data to the pool. I think I'm lucky really.

So let's do this live! As I type this, I've put a 4K 60 FPS video onto the main screen and sure enough I'm watching the temperature go up. Now at 80C, although no fan noise yet (I can still hear my external HDD, so I can be quite sensitive to noise levels). Seems to have stabilised at 75-85, fluctuating, and I'm getting just the tiniest bit of fan noise now. I wouldn't say it's loud, but it's there. I can't hear it over the YouTube video if I unmute the video. Unfortunately my internet connection isn't good enough to stream 4K, so lots of buffering going on, which is giving the MBP a chance to cool between streams.

I'm typing this in Microsoft Edge browser, with 2 instances of Xcode running in the background (no simulator). WhatsApp Desktop is also open, but that adds nothing to the load really.

I can REALLY get the fans spun up if I start Chrome and use Hangouts with the camera open though. I do that daily for work, and it's generally very loud.

In terms of physical setup, I have an Anker dock attached to the left rear port. Hanging off that is an HDMI cable to the WQHD Monitor, and a USB cable to an external HDD. I have a DisplayPort cable (not TB) in the left front port to the 4K monitor. The right rear port is where the power cable is plugged in. The laptop is on a stand (maybe the ventilation there is helping?) and I'm using an external keyboard and trackpad.

The only photo I have of the setup is when it was an HD and WQHD monitor. Since then the HD was replaced with a 4K.

I was hoping for measurement (fan speed/ heat) screenshots lol but thanks! In my experience, the macbook wants to keep heat at 60, so fans will turn up anything above 65. Strange you're not even getting fans at 80.

Peak fan speeds attached. I can just hear it, but the video drowns it out.

At 65 (seems to be my standard idle speed with these monitors attached) the fans sit at 2500. If I put my ear close to the machine to hear them, I can hear the HDD behind the machine spinning lol. To me, it appears than 2600 and below is basically silent.

I think my setup is maybe too perfect to be used as a baseline. Room is cold. No direct sunlight. Machine is elevated off the desk.

Did you buy your model before or after the 5600M model came out?

I am in Canada. And yes. Have AppleCare plus. New unit just had export scan in Shanghai. Should be here next week Tuesday.

Room is cold.

This I suspect makes a big difference here. It is winter here. Ambient around 19 deg C. My 5600m has been pretty quiet. It was smoky here this week and had my office closed up for a few days and as a result my office was much warmer - probably 24 deg C. I had a case of high fan speed I couldn’t explain... I strongly suspect the higher ambient temp made the difference and caused the fans to spin up much more aggressively.

Use a 5-fan cooloing pad on mine and keep the room 66 Deg / 19 C as well. Don't have a lot of the major issues outside the 20w with open and external. But can live with it.

These are the numbers with a 4k video at full screen running for a bit? Thats not bad too bad. I have a MBP base model and mine will hit mid 4000's.

Does anyone know if the current SwitchResX works with Big Sur? Nothing on their website right now. If not, I won't be able to check out the Big Sur public beta.

Thanks

Hey guys, first comment here. I guess I'm just gonna add my experience to the whole lot of comments there's already on the matter.

Bought a secondhand MBP 16 inch less than a week ago for full-time music production. Coming from a 2014 15 inch MBP, I must say that I am quite disappointed. Even when doing the most trivial tasks (Safari, opening up a close to empty LPX project file) and/or especially having an external display plugged in, the 16 inch MBP is louder than my 2014 MBP under heavy workload (80+ audio tracks LPX project with tons of plugins, master chain activated, Safari in the background, etc). Spent the whole week trying to troubleshoot the noise issue, but even after trying all the fixes I found on the forum (switchresx, deactivating TB, etc.) I came to the conclusion that the 16 inch MBP is simply a loud and hot machine.

The 16 inch MBP simply cannot deal with all the heat the powerful components inside of it produce, especially the dGPU which is receiving massive amount of power for tasks that would normally put close to no pressure on the GPU on a unit 6+ years older. I don't understand how Apple can sell a product in that price range with such blatant issues. A 2.6k USD laptop shouldn't require the user to download 3rd-party softwares to merely attempt to get the machine to work as it should right out of the box. Extremely disappointed here.

The situation is so bad that I simply went back to my 2014 MBP and put the 16 inch MBP back on sale, as it is almost unusable for music production, which is quite a shame.

Hopefully Apple will introduce low fan noise similar to the 2014 MBPs with their new Apple Silicon Macbook line coming 2020-2021, as they let music production professionals down with those ridiculously loud 2020 Macbooks.

You've articulated the issue perfectly @bibo7137. For those that have owned high-end MBPs for years, we know what heat and fan noise are supposed to be like when connected to external displays. These 16"-ers are not like earlier models (in a bad way), and Apple *has* to understand.

The company's marketing of the 16"-ers focused heavily on their revamped thermals, so it's clear the product development team gave it extra attention, but they overshot here and something went wrong.

Thank you for sharing your experience as a musician with the MBP 16". Can you please tell us what were the specs of the machine?.

I'm going to chime in here having followed this thread for nearly 3 months now.
I also think there are problems at OS level. I have recently updated to Mac OS Catalina on my MacBook Pro 15" Early 2013.

Let's take a look at the stats of my MacBook Pro 15" Early 2013 with the following specs.
- Intel Core i7 processor 2.4GHz quad-core
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5
- RAM 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3L
- 2880x1800 native resolution
- 2 Thunderbolt 1 ports

Safari ran a YouTube stream in 720p quality. Nothing else was opened application-wise.
The lid was open and I connected the MacBook to a FullHD (1920x1080) monitor via Displayport.
- Mac OS Catalina = 4100 rpm
- Mac OS Mojave = 3200 rpm

I'm not sure, whether this is a coincidence.

PS: I also considered to buy the 16" MacBook Pro.

Amusing timing. This is the first time I've owned a MBP during summer, and therefore first time during motorsport season. I have my, previously quiet, MBP with my multiple screens and I have some sports streaming sites open (not completely legit ones...if you know what I mean), and I have 3 streams up. These sites are REALLY pushing the fans up. I'm up over 4000 RPM now and can hear it.

So yeah, not the best.

Hi guys.

I'm about to get mbp 16" soon as a replacement for my 2018 mbp 13".
When connecting 4k 27" external monitor to my 13" I can't hear the fans. Only under some high CPU usage (e.g. building android / ios project).

Is there anything I can do with MBP 16" to aviod this issue? Turn off CPU boost? Pick the correct configuration? Avoid external monitor 🤣?

I really need some more power with the proper keyboard and I really nic to try the 16" as I need to be mobile (that's why I can't really look at the new imac)

Get a MBP 16" with 5600M dGPU 😂
