You need the 5600m. Then all is well. I am glad I just went ahead and got the 16 maxed out.
Or an eGPU, it runs like a desktop. Works well and boosts your performance.

Anyway this thread is getting a bit ... old. Overally the experience on the laptop is good and it's an Intel / AMD issue. We've been over this, over and over, and over, AND over...

yep and people are still not getting it. It’s the thread that keeps on giving.
5600m or egpu, which as you say, runs very well [especially in bootcamp].

I might even get a 3090 in egpu for boot camp. For premiere pro.
maybe overkill for the throughput in the TB3?
My 2080 super is clearly faster in my PC than in the Egpu in bootcamp, due to the limitations on the cable. Still great though.

I am considering getting a 3090 for the PC box [has better cooling] and drop the 2080 back into the Egpu for WFH use with the MBP.

It is amazing what an Egpu can do for those who can utilise it 100% for productivity. Certainly transforms the MBP into a good desktop.

"normal behavior"

Dual 5Ks plus the clamshell while playing dual 4K videos is a pretty notable load on both the CPU and GPU. I imagine some of the gaming laptops would not struggle and pant with this task, but these systems would be substantially larger than the MacBook Pro to contain a much more extensive cooling system.

I dont have dual 5Ks to test this on but I can repeat this with dual 4Ks to see if the 5600M fares much better. My guess would be that there will still be audible fan noise even with the more powerful and much more efficient 5600M.

Yup. I've been running a 16" (64GB, 4TB, 5600M) for about 3 months. It is connected to both an XDR display and 27" Thunderbolt Display and I have no heat or fan issues at all.

Depends what actually real work bandwidth vs. Speed will be. If it's better than 5600m under mac os x.

Have to research. If it saved me 20% less render time it would be worth it.

Not sure if it was mentioned before, but if you want to use more than 1 external monitor and stay calm & quiet you can use Sidecar or better Duet app with any Android tablet or some old mac/win computer. Surely not so pretty soluiton, but closed lid, one external monitor (4K, USB-C) and the iPad even in a high resolution can still keep my Radeon High Side under 8W.

I'm sure this has been talked about before, but I can't find it right now.

Is the fact that with an external display you can't force the use of the iGPU a hardware or software thing? I mean being able to simply use the iGPU always would solve our problem after all (as far the dGPUs power isn´t needed of course).

Surely it must be possible somewhere in the depths of the OS to completely disable the dGPU so that the device acts like a 13" MBP without a dGPU. Has anyone tried that in Windows device manager in Boot Camp?

Don't have my mac anymore so can't try it but give this a shot.
Let us know how it went.

sudo pmset -a gpuswitch 0

You either have to check or uncheck the automatic GPU switching in preferences for this to work.
Not sure how it will perform with an external display. Never tried.

To reverse this just type:
sudo pmset -a gpuswitch 1

Anyone that has a fix for the wattage using custom resolution in SwitchResX can DM me? I can't figure it out and need some help.

Using a 16" 5500M 4GB, 1440p external monitor connected via HDMI

Same problem with my 16" macbook pro and BenQ PD2720U external monitor, I upgraded from Catalina to Big Sur 11.1 and since then only problems, now I can no longer use the external monitor via usbc usbc thunderbolt3, when it is displayed everything goes at 30 hz on only 1080p 30hz, unusable.
It's a horrible bug!, Apple should be ashamed of releasing such an update! absurd! Should we wait for the Big Sur update? can it be resolved temporarily?

I posted on here months ago, bought and purchased multiple 16's with all configs. Unfortunately I need to use chrome for my work. That fires up the fans to the max no matter what.
I have a new M1 16gb that works great for everything that I need EXCEPT the multiple screen support. I may have to buy a cheap used 16mbp and wait it out until the M2 comes out... and hope for a fix.

Question is - why dGPU using so much power in idle when you connect a monitor ? Idle power consuption iGPU and dGPU should be the same...
