Just so I understand, there is currently no way to normally use both the MBP and an external monitor, with both screens going, without the computer over and fans blaring? Am I understanding this correctly?

Some of us have waited for the last 4+ years to upgrade, I’m on the mid 2012 Retina, hoping to get the latest MBP without the keyboard issues and Touch Bar. As a photographer and editor, the only way I’ve ever used any of my computers is by having, at a minimum, two displays (including built in ones) going.

This is incredible to hear. I refuse, on principle, to run my brand new $5000+ machine on “low power mode” right out of the box. That is assuming the new machines will have the same issue.

Will they? I guess I will not be ordering on the first day, and I’ll have to wait some more to see what the results are from early adopters and reviewers. This is pretty insane.

Not exactly like that. You could buy the mbp 16 with 5600 dgpu or wait for mbp16 m1. The 5300 and 5500 give us the headeaches. The new 16 m1 could be better, no one knows but the m1 13 had great reviews.

When you say new 16 m1, you mean the upcoming M1X version?

And the 16 with 8600 dgpu is quite a jump in $$$, no?

Yup m1x sorry, also I had in mind the 5600 not 8600, it’s early morning for me sorry. Yes it’s quite a jump so maybe it will be better to wait for the m1x and see how it behaves. If you’re an intel guy then 5600 is the way to go, this dgpu runs cooler and is more powerful than 5500.
Also you could go with the egpu route as I did before the pandemic. It might be reasonable if you have some gpu like rx580 laying around.

Well... Under pro Audio/Video workloads, the 5600 model will still face VRM throttling. Besides, the 5600M is $800+ upgrade from the base model. I'd recommend skipping the 16" MBP. It's not worth the hassle. If bootcamp is critical for you, just get a maxed 13" Intel MBP with an eGPU instead. The 13" Intel seems to be a stable machine for what it's worth & you'll get far superior GPU performance for many years to come (you could upgrade eGPUs as you like).

Regarding the rumored 16" M1X MBP, influencers and fanboys will calling it the second coming of Christ when it releases. The CPU performance will be off the charts. But then we'll discover some frustrating design defect/flaw a few months after release. Maybe the RAM chips overheat or maybe the SSD dies randomly. Apple will deny it for a few years. They'll quietly fix the flaws over 2-3 generations. The cycle will repeat.

What a frustrating mess this has been!

or maybe skip macs and get a Thinkpad. I will NEVER again buy a Mac again. With M1X it will be. crap show with software. No proper gaming, no proper engineering apps

macOS is not even great, lacks apps and programs and gaming is a joke.

I would much rather get a Surface Laptop or Thinkpad than ANY mac

I use bootcamp my 16".

The only reason for me to buy a Mac is for music production (I have a few dozen of projects in Logic Pro X which I cannot abandon). I will NEVER buy a MacBook again for sure. I might only consider the cheapest Mac mini to maintain access to my Logic projects 5-6 years from now. Apple's pro audio/video customers are dwindling quick. Apple can keep the pleb fanboys who empty the wallet at every product release.

This is what happens when you lock yourself into an ecosystem.

I make sure most of my apps are cross platform before using them
I don't really understand what you are implying here. I haven't locked myself into any ecosystem. I doubt most on this thread are locked-in completely either.
Logic Pro X is a professional music recording/production software; arguably an 'industry standard' alongside ProTools. While Logic Pro X, Ableton, ProTools etc. have a lot of overlap, there are also a lot of unique 'features' only available in one (and not the other). Or some features which are too complicated to use in another software. Using any piece of professional software comes with some risk of lock-in. Not to mention, learning and mastering a software like Logic Pro X or Final Cut Pro requires years of training and practice.

Some people might just need to use Excel (which MS chose to make cross platform fortunately), so good for them. Many on this thread might require a specific piece of Apple software which they just cannot avoid. For instance, if your work requires you to use Xcode for making iOS apps & maintain them, you don't have a choice. It's not a matter of lock-in, there's just no alternative.

You’re in the 14 and 16 inch preorder thread literally stating how you can’t wait to buy the upcoming gen Macs so you can hook up a 144hz display. You also say this about intel chips:

“Suit yourself. I will happily upgrade to apple SoC Mac.

Stay on a piss poor Intel Mac thats heats up, has horrible battery life and fans that sound like a jet engine when watching a 4k video.”

”oh if you wanna skip this gen of macbook. You will be waiting 5 years for the next gen. Good luck using a Intel Mac for that long”

What chips do you think Surface laptops and Thinkpads use? Hint: it’s not AMD. I do agree with you that we’ll just get new issues as it’s Apple and something always goes wrong on their computers nowadays. I share your frustration, but honestly there is no proper alternative.

Surface and thinkpads use AMD.

Yes I am excited for the new Macs(mainly for M1X SoC) but I keep changing my mind when Apple keeps hindering the Macbook line. I will reserve upgrading until the new macbook matures, 3-4 years before upgrading.

Apple knows how to make great computers ie: iMac Pro and Mac Pro. These Macs have no issues and have been on the market for years.

But why can't they make a proper laptop/notebook with almost no dealbreaker flaws.

Here's a thought: Have Apple's best engineers been working the ARM Mac transition for the last 5-6 years??

The Mac Pro has no hardware faults and it looks better engineered than the MBP line.

Hopefully Apple put their best engineers for the M1X macbooks because they haven't done that for the 2016 MBP refresh.

Honestly if they made a computer on the quality level of the 2015 macbook pro, I can forgive them. But right now, I’m closer than ever of switching away from the Mac ecosystem. I’m so sick and tired of all these issues that every single MacBook since 2016 has had. Their quality control has gone to absolute **** past few years. Every single model has had issues, which Apple will ofcourse deny as long as possible. Not to mention just a few weeks ago I had a ‘genius’ technician tell me that the lightbleed I noticed on my M1 MacBook was withing tolerances because I could only see it in a dark environment.

yeah these upcoming models better fix all the ****-show we had to deal with regarding thermals, ports and battery life on higher end macbooks.

Guys, I think that discussion about which OS is “better” is not a point for this thread. People want to read about the fix and solutions for the problem with external display, not reading arguments about macOS vs Windows. There are plenty of forums for that. Peace

Amen to that.
Anyone got any update with Beta 9? I am gonna install Beta 9 in a few minutes and test it too.

Yes, Apple has gone from being the best to being the least bad.

I will also never buy a portable Mac again. The longevity and reliability is definitely gone.

The fact that Flexgate is (surpise, surprise) still a thing on newer Macs (16" and even M1 Macs) and that there is no repair program for this (expensive) design flaw (one could also call it "planned obsolence") simply proofs that Apple just doesn't care. And why should they if people gonna buy a new Mac anyway?
