Apple == Icarus

Edit: Just started installing Monterey beta myself, I'll cancel out Apple flying too close to the sun by running a beta OS and flying too close to the sun myself

My biggest fear with running beta software like this is leftover issues and clutter that persist, but oh well, some software issues are better than another thrashed device

That's the best joke ever in tech, no? Low power mode == high performance mode. Go explain that!

This guy is using low power mode on the iphone 13 Pro Max and it gave better SUSTAINED performance and higher FPS for longer than normal mode. Of course its not an MBP 16" but the logic applies here as well.

Sorry, been out of the loop for a while ..... so it appears that the "fix" for the high power draw on the 5500 is to enable low-power mode on Monterey?

On bootcamp in Windows 10, with official AMD drivers its 14-15 Watts as well.

Seems be the case with AMD GPUS ever since the use of GDDR6 memory.

So i run some benchmarks (Geekbench and Cinebench) without and with Power Saving Mode on Beta 8. Fans barely kicks in with Power Saving Mode but the hit in those benchmarks seems to be quite noticeable.

Yeah, that’s what I though. What we need is just turn the dgpu when we don’t need with external display. But low power mode will work for me for the lighter tasks like creative work, illustrations, office work, browsing etc. For heavier tasks I could switch to high power mode and close the lid. For the heaviest video and animation tasks I have egpu with rx580 8gb. So this low power mode is a welcome feature/“fix”.

Maybe someone can make mod about turn on power save mode on when we connect external display and automatic off when we disconnect it.

Amateur developer here; Monterey beta upgrade was seamless, OS-wise I didn't notice any change, maybe the most seamless macos upgrade I did, have the Low Power Mode on both on battery and AC - I don't notice any performance issues either

I haven't been using an external monitor for a while though, If I have to make something up, I'd say the battery life is 15% longer and the device seems cooler

Thrash apps like Pixelmator can still force High Perf graphics even when you don't have anything open, so when you are on battery, "sudo pmset -b gpuswitch 0" is still useful, and "sudo pmset -a gpuswitch 2" resets it

TL;DR: If you don't use an external monitor, the upgrade might not be worth the risk but it doesn't hurt either

For my MBP 16" 2019, it is hot and noisy even without an external monitor nor playing of video.

Open Activity Monitor > Energy and check whether something is forcing High Perf graphics

After I wrote my comment, I kept Pixelmator open (forces High Perf) just to see what happened, after 30 minutes now, it's hot on AC but the fans aren't on

Basically the graphics card still heats the device, just not as much assumably

I think we should use the feedback tool with the beta OS and push for more GPU nerfing

Because as I tested, just by forcing the High Perf GPU to be active, the machine generates a lot of heat still, the OS still doesn't override High Perf usage on battery, ideally apps would be smart and responsible, but they are not :(

Yeah, I would rather throttle my GPU down than CPU since I don't do anything graphic intensive :|

For me this is good news—apparently they found a way to keep the GPU wattage low without sacrificing GPU power?!
