I have an older model (Dell U2713HM), and it's locked at 59.88 Hz. Is that close enough to 60 Hz, or do you think it makes a difference (i.e. cause >7 W power draw in clamshell)?

It made a difference for me (~18W @ 59.88 with my Dell monitor). Using SwitchResX you can increase it to 60 Hz (at full resolution) and power usage will drop way down.

Some time ago I wrote a letter to Apple's board of directors, including Tim Cook. Today I received a call request from Management Relation Specialist, who is willing to talk about my problem. Will update you as soon as the call will take place.

Great news! Let us know, do you need any additional evidence or what's on the thread is enough for you to pass them along to Apple?

My MacBook is one large piece of evidence and I can provide them as many details as they want. If more data from multiple machines will be required I will let you know and ask for upload. ;)

Let's hope we can finally ge this fixed! the new .15 update sort of fixed my stuttering issues with the iGPU so that's a good step in the right direction.

Now if only the screen didn't have so much ghosting.. :p

I really don't care about the ghosting, my model either is not affected or my eyes are just not so sensitive for seeing ghosting. However they are perfect for spotting thermal issue :p

Did you have to create your own custom resolution in SwitchResX? Or did a 60 Hz option show up by default? I've got a Ultrasharp 2717D and a 60 Hz option doesn't show in the list of available resolutions in SwitchResX.

Yes, you need to create a custom setting - resolution and refresh rate. You may have to try a few refresh rates (on either side of your current one) at the resolution you want.

I have a 2719dc, the one that works is above 60Hz (72Hz onward) not below.

Nice one. Thanks for the heads up. Will be sure to give this a try later on. Do you know if you have to disable system integrity protection or anything like that for SwitchResX to work as custom resolutions?

Just successfully managed to get Apple to accept a return for my 16" which was about a week past the return window. By the way the advisor reacted, they seem to be aware of the issues. When quoting that my existing monitors were incompatible, the advisor asked me to confirm that this was making the machine run hot? I replied yes, but I hadn't yet mentioned heat.

AFAIK this issues is getting fixed in the latest revision of AMDs desktop hardware. If this transfers down directly to their laptop hardware I think that's when I'll be back.

Yeah returned mine also, I was quite a bit outside the window. Went with the new 13” for now And its ice cold running my 2x 4k displays. But I don’t do too much graphics intense work often so works great for me. Was considering an eGPU, but the new iGPU is quite impressive for what i need. Can even edit 4k video in Final Cut With relatively no issues.

I take it you went with the new 10th gen 13" model? Do you run the laptop open when connected to multiple displays and/or does it make a difference if you do?

I was trying to decide between the 13" or 16". Was already erring towards the 13" model for the size/price but the monitor issue pretty much put me off the 16" as I often use my laptop open connected to an external display.

I updated today. 10.15.5 is even worse. More noise, hotter and constant restarts when it goes into energy saving.

I'm absolutely sick of this MacBook. I've lost all my trust in this guys.

Hoping it improves the constant kernal panics and crashing that came with 10.15.4 though!

Exactly the opposite. More kernel panics than ever before.

Here is the article: https://www.anandtech.com/show/11278/amd-radeon-rx-580-rx-570-review/2

The marketing material in that looks to be from AMD and mentions "Enhanced Idle & Multi Monitor Effiency". The author also discusses it in the review.

As for if this actually actually translates to their laptop range, that could be a different question. You can only hope
The article is 2 years old. I guess AMD and Apple are really not in hurry to improve the "Multi Monitor Efficiency" ?

Also where in the article is the issue "getting fixed"? Their latest 580x still consumed 26 more watts using unmatched multi-monitors while nVidia's kept the same 73W accross all their external monitors testing.

10.15.5, still the same behavior.

So at this point, from what I can see there are now only 2 confirmed solutions:

1. Use a single USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 display in clamshell mode.
2. Use a Thunderbolt 3 eGPU and connect the extra monitors to the eGPU.

Otherwise, just live with the extra heat/power consumption or return the computer, I guess. Apple doesn't seem interested in fixing this issue at all.

It's so weird that this is an issue with macOS but not an issue at all in Windows. I don't ever hear about Windows laptops getting hot and noisy when in clamshell mode and connected to an external display.

I thought this was a solved problem! It seems to be the case, at least in the PC world....

I'm having new issues with 10.15.5

When it goes into sleep for a while it never comes back. I need open the lid and hard reset the laptop everytime.

Every MacOS receives 6 updates, Catalina is in his 5th and getting worse. Frustrating.

About noise, I'm trying Turbo Boost Switcher but even disabling TB coolers are always over 3000RPM just browsing.

Literally thinking the same. I came from 2016 first gen touch bar 13 MBP. I got the 16" MBP thinking it might be the last macbook I buy (we'll see where iPad OS gets us in the next few years) but guys i'm so disappointed.
First, the kernel panics on the first day. I reset the SMC and disabled the power nap - it seems like that worked.
BUT these fans are something else! literally running only safari at the moment, sure it's hot today in the bay area but holly mother of baby Jesus! I was just on a zoom call and my sister was like what's that sound i can't hear you well.
I really don't want to go and do custom fan speeds and settings just to have a normal laptop that I dropped $2800 on.

Has anyone switched to the new 10th gen 13" with upgraded ram and stuff?
I can return this, get a brand new 13 with 32 ram and an iPad pro for the same price as the 16" I have now.
Thoughts?
