Like you i'll wait on the arrival of the air I ordered and see for myself how the thermals go. Do post on here when you get a chance to try your i7 out; think you're a week or two ahead of me in the queue

Will do. I'm pretty technical so will see what i can do with it, but i do have reasonable expectations - its an ultrabook not a $6k workstation.

Mine still says 8th April for delivery but there's also a note on the courier saying

Transit time change. Please take note of the new delivery date and time.
TNT is working to resolve this and will contact you shortly if needed.

For the past 3 days, but date still says 8th April before 6pm. Guess i'll see in a few days!

Great! maybe they did forget to update the doc. Can you right click on the video and click 'stats for nerds' to confirm.

I'm pretty sure Safari has a higher usage share on MacOS than Chrome does. Chrome is a popular browser, it used to be better optimized on MacOS but you can't fault Apple for a Google issue. I have both Safari and Chrome on my Mac and use Chrome sparingly.
No way, Chrome has a much higher market share even on Mac OS:

Do you guys think MBA 2020 is a good upgrade from 2016 NTB, no heat pipe and all? haha

I don't really push my machine for the most part

Depends.

If your 2016 is still holding charge, keyboard still works, etc. i'd hold off until those things aren't the case.

You say you don't push the machine - unless there's some other driver to upgrade, keep using what you have!

That is surprising to me. Chrome market share seems to have increased after late 2016 on MacOS. Wonder what happened then.

I'd say that probably happened when Safari started blocking extensions. I switched to Chrome/Opera when my 1password purchase stopped working.

I use 1password with Safari without issue.

Yeah i know it can be done with the App store version, but i bought direct from 1password. Because i used to use it cross-platform.

Rather than re-purchase, path of least resistance for now = just use another browser that allows me to use the product i paid for. Safari doesn't work with a bunch of enterprise stuff i use anyway.

If you want a laptop without cooling compromises, don't buy a thin/light ultrabook form factor from any vendor. In fact, don't buy a laptop, build your own PC in a proper case.

Come on, I'm not talking about overheating while playing a game or nouting a video. It's not acceptable you can't play a 4k on YouTube without hearing the fans going up.

I'd accept it on a 300 € laptop, not 1800. Let's be realistic

I didn’t think MBA could even display a 4K video on its screen.

Even five minutes of playing 1080p video will get it to 92 degrees C.

In addition, keep in mind that the engine behind Chrome is used not only in the web browser, but many apps use it internally, like Slack, Visual Studio Code, Skype and Discord.

Also, playing games might cause high temperatures, but just downloading and installing Fortnite keeps the CPU at 100 degrees C. This video says that took over an hour.

Just use an Adblocker to prevent this from happening.
I'm gobsmacked that anyone would browse without one!

For the record, I use Firefox and often have 40 or so tabs open at a time (right now I've got 29 open). No way can I do that on Chrome without it stalling.

Nerds and geeks, oh sorry, I mean "professionals" care about heatsinks and optimized cooling and Apple knows this. This computer was meant for the average consumer, the one that, believe it or not, does not care at all about the heatsink, cooling or benchmarks (let alone 20 benchmarks in arow) and will absolutely never notice or mind it.

This is why it makes this sort of argument against the Macbook Air weird in the first place.
Want better cooling and performance? Get the Macbook Pro. Want even more portability? Get a refurbished 12 inch. It's not about cannibalization, it's about Apple offering different products to different costumers.

And yeah, we know, "Apple expensive"... Just don't buy it.

Again, some people just love to hate on Apple any chance they get.

In my case I wanted to go with an Air as it doesn't have the touch bar, which the Pro does. I checked performance and the Air is on par with my MacBook Pro 15" from 2014, which is just fine for me. What's not fine is having the thing burn my legs. My current machine usually hovers around 60c, and I find that to be on the limit of what I can accept, when we're getting into 75c and 90c for just consuming media, then it's too hot.

lols, it wouldn't be a problem if MBA 2020 has a heat pipe. Too bad then.
Can I borrow your 2020 MBA with heatpipe to test the theory? Or did you just make that up (again)?

I'm sorry, but there appears to be a lot of speculation about "heatpipes" in this thread with absolutely no evidence to support that a) it is possible to retrofit one, and b) it would make much difference anyway.

In fact, we already know it wouldn't make a difference because the chip is throttled to 10W – not temperature – by the firmware. Something that Mr nnoob tried to explain to you in many posts, but you just don't seem to understand.

So go ahead and retrofit that heatpipe and then re-write the firmware if it makes you happy. Somehow I don't think either of those things are going to happen. Indeed, I doubt you will even buy a 2020 MBA in the first place, so I'm really not sure why it's design seems to upset you so much.

I really cannot say whether it would be possible to retrofit a heatpipe and a CPU fan, but I think there is a decent case for it helping.

I think a few pages back in this thread, there was a video demonstrating the effect of water cooling and the effect of putting a gel pack under the bottom case. In both cases, performance increased and temperatures decreased to some degree. The cooling effect of a heat pipe and CPU fan probably would be somewhere between these two methods.

If a thermal limit is the limiting factor instead of a power limit, this makes sense.

When the CPU hits a thermal limit, the MBA seems to reduce power to the CPU. In the linked video, the Intel Power Gadget shows the MBA CPU continuously drawing 12-13W when using these two cooling methods, instead of 10W. The limits in the firmware did not change, but maybe they just were not triggered.

Fortnite for Mac OS is incredibly poor code and is not optimized - just like Chrome for Mac. It's going to light up the CPU regardless.
