QB Lamar Jackson says he has requested trade from Ravens

I guess, I can assume that he's failed to find a dance partner willing to pay him what he wants AND fork over two first round draft picks to the ravens.

This looks like an end around to avoid the ravens receiving the draft picks and him getting what he wants. I don't know what type of draft capital the ravens would expect, but obviously its less then two first rounds.

I don't know how I feel about this, I suspect this is his first step in the game of chess where he's going to sit out for a year. I suppose getting a single #1 plus other draft picks in 2023, then watching him leave w/o any compensation in 2024? I don't know the ins and outs of NFL contracts, so does sitting out a year without signing the franchise tag make him an unrestricted free agent?

Jets leak a news tidbit to Schefter, that they may consider going after Lamar because of GB asking too much. Right now Green Bay is playing their hand like they have all of leverage when in fact they don't. His contract runs through 2026 and the remaining cap hit from 2023 through 2026 is 185 million combined. (31 million this year, 40 next and then a 59, and 53 for the last two years respectively.)

If they even get a hint that the Jets are willing to walk away, their price will go down, and so the Jets ought to play hardball and using Lamar will do that.

Crazy thought #2.
Actually pursue Lamar Do you want to pay a kings ransom for a fading star who's 40 years old, or pay a kings ransom for a 26 year old ?

Though I am critical of Lamar, he's a way better choiuce than Rodgers. Lamar will be a little steeper price, but not much steeper, and he's 14 years younger.

From a draft capital perspective, at most he'll cost the Jets 2 first round picks. Of course that presupposes that they give him a quarter of a billion dollars fully guaranteed

Nope. It just tolls until next year. So if he sits, he will be in the same position next year, but a year older.

Teams simply aren't going to give him a guaranteed deal. The Watson contract was a desperate franchise doing something stupid. And Cousins was only 3 years/$84M, so that isn't really even comparable to what Jackson is asking for.

He is making himself irrelevant.

Because Jackson wants $250M and while Rodgers might be expensive on a yearly basis, he won't be long term. You sign Jackson for $250M and he gets hurt, your in a world of cap hurt for the remainder of the contract.

Here's the thing, they're paying a boatload of money for the Rodgers will have some significant hit to their cap in the coming years given how the contract is structured. I think a case can be made for having a younger player in his prime is better then an aging star who said he was all but going to retire.

I don't think the Jets are going to walk away from the trade, but I think they could use Lamar Jackson to their advantage, as I said

You're right, the injury issues of Jackson is a huge risk, but I think overall its a better move

Ok, I didn't know that, thanks

Rodgers will be due around $110M for the next two years of his contract. That's a lot for sure.

But as part of a trade, let's say to the Jets, they could tear it up and sign him to a new contract with a large signing bonus thereby lowering their overall annual cap hit for a couple of years.

I have heard pundits saying that GB has no leverage and some saying the Jets have no leverage. I think the Jets have more because I don't think the Packer's want him back at $110M for the next two years.

It's the coach. When he was the Broncos coach, he shredded them and now it's the Raiders turn. If anything Waller wasn't used enough. The coach needed to go not Waller. When will this Davis kid get a clue/or care about the team.

True, McDaniels sucked when he was with the Broncos. Doesn’t look like he has improved at all.

Bill Belichick - if the Patriots struggle this year could this be the beginning of the end for him? Seems like Kraft in an interview was a bit cagey in answering theat

The Patriots have their work cut out, I'd say they're the weakest team in the AFC East. That's 6 games out of 17 that they may have some real difficulty winning.

BB has an opportunity to leave while on top but that window has closed.

Funny how not having a franchise QB suddenly makes a coach look average.

I think there were a lot of factors, though losing Brady was a huge blow. I mean look at how poorly the patriots played in Brady's final year.

Not having a franchise QB certainly transforms a decent (or good) team into a very poor team

The Patriots were lucky to have a high amount of depth at many positions and such talented players like Ty Law who could play different positions. Also at one point the Patriots could pay these players less because, heck who doesn't want a Lombardi trophy but now that era has come and gone, no one is willing to take a discount to play on the patriots, thus making it harder to fill positions - especially since the patriot organization appears to be rather cheap when it comes to paying players

Davis never will. He is an imbecile.

And they should have used Waller more. I believe they got pissed at him because he didn't rehab his pulled hamstring to their liking... so he kinda sealed his own fate... which I believe has worked in his favor...

PFT is reporting that Bill Belichick has shopped Mac Jones this offseason If that is true, that can't be a good sign, both from a QB/Coach perspective but also having a team unified and focused on winning.

I think Mac Jones has a lot of upsides, he as some downsides (don't we all), but they don't seem to be show stoppers and he's a young kid. Capable of going really far in the NFL. I think Belichick/Patriots failed him last year, he's not a grizzled veteran, he needs a lot of coaching, mentoring and help to transition from college QB to pro.

Its a new world out there, but they used to draft Qbs and let them learn for a few years before starting, now, you throw them right in, ready or not

Now that The Hoodie has an actual offensive coordinator, maybe Mac will be better this year. Having a D guy calling O plays can't be good for a QB's development.

OBJ signs with the Ravens, $15m. He took money over winning (who's going to be throwing to him? It probably isn't going to be Lamar)

He already has a SB ring, I don't blame him for signing to the highest bidder. 15 guaranteed, but with incentives, 18 million.

I think this helps the Ravens if they DON'T have Lamar next season. IF they get someone who's a better passer, OBJ is a potent weapon - provided his knees hold out and he hasn't lost a step.

As for Lamar, there will be no movement until the draft comes and goes. Even then I think his only shot is with the Ravens. At this point, there's no team willing to give up 2 first round draft picks and make him a king's ransom which will be fully guaranteed. I don't think he'll see the light but he's getting a lesson on his true value. Its not 280 million guaranteed and two 1st round picks
